EvangelizationThe first and most potent means ofrenewed evangelization is not theteaching of doctrine, but thewitnessing to others of the workingof Gods grace in our lives.

How?1) by living according to the Gospel,

so that our lives may be Gospel

inspired2) by giving testimony to our

    experience of Gods grace

The Holy Spirit: the PrincipalAgent of Evangelization

It was by the power of the Holy Spirit that theIncarnation was accomplishedIt was in the power of the Holy Spirit that Christcarried out his evangelizing work, (his first gift tothe Church after His resurrection was the HolySpirit.)A dramatic outpouring of this Spirit took place on thePentecost, inaugurating the Churchs evangelizingmission. It is the Holy Spirit who continues and brings thework of Christ to perfection. It is the Holy Spirit who impels each individual toproclaim the gospel, and it is he who in the depths ofconsciences causes the word of salvation to beaccepted and understood.

The Church, a flawed but potent

    resource

The Church is perceived as the bastion ofconservatism and as the defender of thesocial status quo

But the Church can should be a powertowards integral national development

The Church is a light the illumines aspiritual force that needs to critique the

social, political and cultural fields in orderto affirm, denounce, purify or reinforce inthe light of the Word of God.

Our Vision of a New FilipinoNation

We shall have to create a free nation;where human dignity and solidarity

    are respected and promoted;

    where moral principles prevail insocio-economic life and structures;

where justice, love and solidarity are

    the inner driving forces ofdevelopment.

  • 8/4/2019 Renewed Mission of the Church

    14/32

We shall have to build a sovereignnation:

    where every tribe and faith arerespected;

    where diverse tongues and traditionswork together for the good of all;

where membership is a call toparticipation and involvement, and leadership a summon to

    generous service.

  • 8/4/2019 Renewed Mission of the Church

    15/32

Ours will have to be a people:

in harmony with one anotherthrough unity in diversity;in harmony with creation, and in harmony with God.

    Social Apostolate towardsTransformation

How should the Church foster socialtransformation and assist the little people inbringing about harmony and kaayusan intheir lives?

How should the Church announce theKingdom of Justice, Peace and Love in thecontext of great social, economic, politicaland cultural imbalances?

How can we, as a community of the Lordsdisciples, be a leaven of socialtransformation?

    A Spirituality of SocialTransformation

Our struggle to build the Kingdom of God is apilgrim journey, a journey to truth andjustice, to love and peace, a journey to fulllife.

In the poverty and underdevelopment of ournation, in its conflicts and divisions,we see the hand of human sinfulness, particularly the grasping paws of greed forprofit and power.

It is sinfulness that is the root of oursocio-economic and politicalproblems, and we need to namethe problems by their true name

    of sin.

  • 8/4/2019 Renewed Mission of the Church

    18/32

Structures of sin or social sins, whichconsist of situations, collectivebehavior, or structures that cause

and perpetuate social injustices.the all-consuming desire for profit,

the thirst for power, with the intentionof imposing ones will upon others

  • 8/4/2019 Renewed Mission of the Church

    19/32

The acknowledgment of sinfulness asthe root cause of our social problemsmust perforce lead to conversion and

social transformation. Conversionrequires the renewal of peoples

    relationships and their social

    structure.

  • 8/4/2019 Renewed Mission of the Church

    20/32

    Jesus Christs message of

    transformation and liberation in the

Kingdom of God is concretized byhis own life and death.

The Beatitudes of the Kingdom areembodied in his own person, as hewent about doing good.

  • 8/4/2019 Renewed Mission of the Church

    21/32

Our way of life- our spirituality-for social transformation is

nothing more and nothing less thana following of Jesusin-mission.

It is the spirituality of the communityof disciples.

Spirituality is a radical living of whatwe preach, a witnessing to the

    radical demands of the Gospel.

  • 8/4/2019 Renewed Mission of the Church

    22/32

    A spirituality of socialtransformation:

is marked by a love of preference for the poor, shares Good News, joy in the midst ofdeprivation, hope in situations of cynicism and pessimism,

a faith that is fully aware of the enduring presenceof God-with-us and of the ultimate victory ofgoodness over evil,Listens to and heeds Gods word, discerns andfollows the Spirit in the Scripture, in the Church

and in history, in the voices of the voiceless andpowerless and finds in the Eucharist not only itsfull nourishment but also its total prayerfulcommunion with the Lord of salvation andliberation. It urges one to care for the earth as Gods gift.

    23/32

    Formation of a Social Conscience

Two dimensions:Persons basic moral tendency in the depths ofa persons being

A basic moral value that summons the person toobedience, to love good and avoid evil

A practical moral judgment in the persons hearttelling the person inwardly at the right moment:do this, shun that.

The dimension of being obliged by God whose voiceechoes in the most secret core and sanctuary of the

    human person

The Social Doctrines of the Church

    Integral Development: Human dignityand solidarity

For development to be integral it

must serve the total person in alldimensions including the interior, that is the spiritual dimension andeternal salvation of human person.

  • 8/4/2019 Renewed Mission of the Church

    25/32

Universal Purpose of Earthly Goodsand Private Property

God destined the earth and all it

contains for all men and all peoples sothat all created things would be sharedfairly by all humankind under theguidance of justice tempered by charity.

  • 8/4/2019 Renewed Mission of the Church

    26/32

Social justice and loveDevelopment cannot be achieved unlessit is thoroughly imbued with justice and

    lovePeace and active non-violence

The Kingdom of God proclaimed byJesus is not a Kingdom to be imposed

by the force of arms. It is a Kingdom tobe built by love, the love of the sufferingservant.

  • 8/4/2019 Renewed Mission of the Church

    27/32

Peace is a harmony in the human heartand in the social order brought about by

    justice, requiring respect for human

dignity and human rights, the promotionof the common good by one and all, andthe constant practice of solidarity.

  • 8/4/2019 Renewed Mission of the Church

    28/32

Love of Preference for the Poor

The common good dictates that moreattention must be given to the less

fortunate members of the society.Eternal salvation depends on the livingout of love of preference for the poorbecause the poor and the needy bearthe privileged presence of Christ.

  • 8/4/2019 Renewed Mission of the Church

    29/32

    The Value of Human Work

A just development would have to givefull recognition to the dignity of human

    work.Jesus worked as a carpenter

The human person is the subject of work

and must not be treated as aninstrument of production. The personhas primacy over things.

  • 8/4/2019 Renewed Mission of the Church

    30/32

    Integrity of Creation

A true and just development mustfundamentally be concerned with a passionatecare of our earth and our environment

The sovereignty granted to us by the Creator isnot a license to misuse Gods creation. We are

but stewards of creation, not its absolutemaster. And stewards are accountable to the

Creator and giver of all good things.

  • 8/4/2019 Renewed Mission of the Church

    31/32

    People Empowerment

No social transformation is genuine andlasting where people themselves do not

actively participate in the process.Persons are the active and responsiblesubjects of social life.

Peoples participation is a recognition ofGods fundamental gifts of freedom and

    responsibility.

  • 8/4/2019 Renewed Mission of the Church

    32/32

The building of Gods Kingdom begins,

after all, on earth and depends onhuman cooperation with the grace of

God,Empowering people is thus aprerequisite in the renewal of ourcountry. Without it, our destiny as a

people would remain in the hands of thefew.
