No destruyas al Sagrado Corazón. Por favor, ¡Construye!
El 5 de octubre, al consagrar a 13 nuevos cardenales, el Papa Francisco les ordenó que fueran compasivos en sus declaraciones, ya que Jesús fue compasivo. Insistió en que
una actitud compasiva siempre proviene de la sensación de haber experimentado la compasión de Dios. El Papa escribe: "Si no me siento objeto de la compasión de Dios, no puedo comprender su amor. Esta no es una realidad que pueda ser explicada. O lo siento o no lo siento. Si no lo siento, ¿cómo puedo compartirlo, dar testimonio de ello y dárselo a los demás?". Entonces, en el espíritu de Jesús denunciando a los líderes religiosos corruptos infieles de su tiempo (Mateo 23), el Santo Padre llamó a cardenales y líderes de la iglesia sin compasión y divisivos:
Concretamente, ¿tengo compasión de tal o cual hermano o hermana, de tal o cual obispo, de tal o cual sacerdote? ... ¿O los derribo constantemente con mi actitud de condena, de indiferencia? Esto también es cierto para ustedes, hermanos cardenales. La disposición de un cardenal a derramar su propia sangre, como lo indica el color escarlata de sus vestiduras, es segura si se basa en esta conciencia de haber recibido compasión a su vez. De lo contrario, uno no puede ser leal. Tantas acciones desleales por parte de los eclesiásticos nacen de la falta de compasión y del hábito de apartar la mirada, el hábito de la indiferencia.
Las palabras de nuestro Papa se aplican a muchas de nuestras comunidades parroquiales. Últimamente, hemos experimentado una actitud de "desgarrarle" aquí en la Iglesia del Sagrado Corazón. Hemos visto a algunos feligreses dando falso testimonio, ofreciendo teorías de conspiración, circulando rumores negativos y castigando a la gente a sus espaldas. Estos comportamientos no son de Dios, sino del diablo. Carecen de compasión y definitivamente no están destinados a construir nuestra parroquia, sino a dividirla y sabotearla. Como dijo nuestro Santo Padre, las personas que se involucran en este tipo de comportamiento no se han permitido experimentar la compasión de Dios, han desviado su mirada de Jesús, o simplemente son indiferentes (carecen de amor). Al contrario, digamos todos que no a dar falsos testimonios, a hacer circular rumores negativos o a castigar a la gente a sus espaldas. Recordemos siempre lo que dice la Escritura: Bienaventurados los que no siguen el consejo de los impíos... o se sientan en compañía de escarnecedores; pero su deleite está en la ley del Señor..... (Salmo 1:1-3). Levantémonos unos a otros y a nuestra parroquia por lo que decimos y hacemos. Os dejo con las instructivas palabras de San Pablo: Que no salga de vuestras bocas maledicencia, sino sólo lo útil para edificar, según sea necesario, a fin de que vuestras palabras den gracia a los que oyen (Ef 4, 29; también leed Lc 6, 37; Mt 7, 1-5). Que Dios los bendiga a todos!

Do Not Tear Sacred Heart Down. Please, Build!
On October 5, while consecrating 13 new cardinals, Pope Francis enjoined them to be compassionate in their utterances as Jesus was compassionate. He insisted that a compassionate attitude always comes from a sense of having experienced God’s compassion. The Pope writes: “Unless I feel that I am the object of God’s compassion, I cannot understand his love. This is not a reality that can be explained. Either I feel it or I don’t. If I don’t feel it, how can I share it, bear witness to it, bestow it to others.” Then, in the spirit of Jesus denouncing the unfaithful corrupt religious leaders of his time (Matthew 23), the Holy Father called out uncompassionate and divisive cardinals and church leaders:
Concretely, am I compassionate toward this or that brother or sister, that bishop, that priest? … Or do I constantly tear them down by my attitude of condemnation, of indifference? This also holds true for you, brother cardinals. The readiness of a cardinal to shed his own blood, as signified by the scarlet colour of your robes, is secure if it is rooted in this awareness of having been shown compassion in turn. Otherwise, one cannot be loyal. So many disloyal actions on the part of ecclesiastics are born of the lack of a sense of having been shown compassion, and by the habit of averting one’s gaze, the habit of indifference.
The words of our Pope rings true of many of our parish communities. Lately, we have experienced a “tear him or her down” attitude here at Sacred Heart Church. We have witnessed a few parishioners bearing false witness, proffering conspiracy theories, circulating negative rumors, and castigating people behind their back. These behaviors are not from God, but from the devil. They lack compassion and are definitely not meant to build our parish up, but to divide and sabotage it. As our Holy Father said, people who engage in this kind of behavior have either not allowed themselves to experience God’s compassion, averted their gaze from Jesus, or are simply indifferent (lacking in love). On the contrary, let us all say no to bearing false witness, circulating negative rumors, or castigating people behind their back. Let us always remember what the scripture says: Blessed are those who do not follow the advice of the wicked… or sit in the company of scorners; but their delight is in the law of the Lord…. (Psalm 1:1-3). Let us lift one another and our parish up by what we say and do. I leave you with St. Paul’s instructive words: Let no evil talk come out of your mouths, but only what is useful for building up, as there is need, so that your words may give grace to those who hear (Eph 4:29; also read Lk 6:37; Mt 7:1-5). I was recently talking with a young youth minister on a retreat that I was hired to do music for and we were having a late night discussion about continued education in ministry. In the midst of this discussion he asked me how often I am continuing my education in ministry and I told him that I do it every day. He looked at me very confused and asked me how that’s possible because in his mind it was something you did every few months or a couple times a year on a retreat or going to a conference. I told him that I am constantly learning in so many different ways. First is the daily scripture readings that I make a point to read every day and reflect on them, often times through lectio devina. Other ways I continue my education is through the catholic podcast I listen to, watching videos from catholic speakers, and deepening my theology by reading things especially as of late from Von Balthasar and Ratzinger. Now I’m not saying that I am spending hours a day doing this because then I would have no time for work and family but I make it a priority to spend at least an hour a day doing these things. Sometimes it is related to a topic I am preparing to talk on so that’s nice but most of the time this is on my own time. We should constantly be growing in our faith no matter how big or small and in different ways so that we can have a well-rounded faith. The things I do to grow may not be the same for others and that’s fine, the important thing is to find what works for you and use it to grow in your faith. Recientemente estuve hablando con un joven del ministro de jóvenes en un retiro para el que fui contratado para hacer música y estábamos teniendo una discusión en la noche sobre la educación continua en el ministerio. En medio de esta discusión me preguntó con qué frecuencia continúo mi educación en el ministerio y le dije que lo hago todos los días. Me miró muy confuso y me preguntó cómo es posible porque en su mente era algo que se hacía cada pocos meses o un par de veces al año en un retiro o en una conferencia. Le dije que estoy aprendiendo constantemente de muchas maneras diferentes. La primera son las lecturas bíblicas diarias que me propongo leer todos los días y reflexionar sobre ellas, a menudo a través de la lectio devina. Otras maneras en que continúo mi educación es a través del podcast católico que escucho, viendo videos de oradores católicos, y profundizando mi teología leyendo cosas especialmente de Von Balthasar y Ratzinger. Ahora no estoy diciendo que estoy pasando horas al día haciendo esto porque entonces no tendría tiempo para el trabajo y la familia, pero hago una prioridad para pasar al menos una hora al día haciendo estas cosas. A veces está relacionado con un tema sobre el que me estoy preparando para hablar, así que es agradable, pero la mayoría de las veces es en mi tiempo libre. Debemos crecer constantemente en nuestra fe, no importa cuán grande o pequeña y de diferentes maneras para que podamos tener una fe completa. Denial is a commonly used defense mechanism for abuse victims. Because they want to believe that things will go back to normal, victims often feel trapped into just allowing the situation to play out. Fear of change can be overwhelming, especially if the
victim has been manipulated by his or her abuser. Victims may also struggle with accepting what’s happening because they know their abuser closely, as a family member or friend. It’s important to recognize the signs of denial and how to break through those barriers that can keep a victim from true healing.
