Today’s Game: The Aces play the second-to-last game of their season in the third game of a four-game set against the Rainiers today at Cheney Stadium. Right-hander Matt Koch gets the nod for Reno, opposite Tacoma righty Sam Gaviglio.
Last Night’s Game: The Aces moved to 10 games above .500 with a 7-2 victory over the Rainiers on Saturday night. Zach Borenstein homered for a second consecutive game, and the Aces’ bullpen combination of Matt Capps, Yuhei Nakaushiro, Evan Marshall and Kaleb Fleck posted 7 1/3 innings of two-run ball. Reno grabbed a 2-0 lead in the third inning, thanks to a two-out rally. Ildemaro Vargas worked a walk against Zach Lee and Todd Glaesmann punched a single to right field, setting up a two-run double that banged off the wall in deep left-center by Chris Herrmann. The Rainiers leveled the score in the home half with a two-out rally of their own. Zach Shank doubled to center before Nori Aoki lined his first home run in a Rainiers’ uniform over the right-field wall. Borenstein’s blast opened the fourth, immediately giving the Aces another lead against Lee who dropped to 0-5 in five starts all-time against Reno. The Aces added a run in the fifth on a two-out RBI single off the bat of Peter O’Brien, ahead of a three-run sixth which knocked Lee out of the game. Consecutive two-out singles by Ronnie Freeman and Kevin Medrano led to a two-run double from Vargas, making it 6-2. Glaesmann then scored Vargas with his second hit of the night to cap the scoring. Capps (4-0) got the win with 2 2/3 innings in relief of Aces hurler Vicente Campos who left with an apparent right arm injury. Campos retired all five batters he faced in his Aces and Pacific Coast League debut. Lee fell to 0-9 for Tacoma and 7-14 this season after allowing seven earned runs on 10 hits and two walks with five strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings. Vargas and Glaesmann both posted two-hit performances, while Medrano – who entered with three hits in 33 Triple-A at-bats – finished with a team-high three knocks out of the No. 9 hole.
Sam Gaviglio: 26-year-old right-hander Sam Gaviglio gets the ball for the Rainiers in game three of the series. He is 3-2 with a 3.83 ERA (24 ER/56.1 IP) in nine games (eight starts) this season for Tacoma. He has faced the Aces twice in his career. He was tagged with the loss on August 25 at Greater Nevada Field, allowing 10 runs (9 earned, both career highs) on 12 hits (one home run) over 5.0 innings with no walks and seven strikeouts. Last year, he took a no-decision after posting 4.1 innings of five-hit, three-run ball on June 24, against Reno at Cheney Stadium. He also has pitched for Double-A Jackson this year, going 5-5 with a 4.15 ERA in 18 games (17 starts). He owns a 34-36 record and a 4.06 ERA (264 ER/585.1 IP) in 109 games (101 starts) over his Minor League career. The righty was acquired by the Seattle Mariners via trade with the St. Louis Cardinals on November 20, 2014, in exchange for INF Ty Kelly. Gaviglio was originally selected by the Cardinals in the fifth round (170th overall) of the 2011 MLB June Amateur Draft out of Oregon State Uni-versity, two spots ahead of OF Mookie Betts, who was taken as a shortstop by the Boston Red Sox.
Bullpen Works Overtime: The Aces’ bullpen pitched 7.1 innings of two-run ball on Saturday night after starter Vicente Campos departed in the second inning with an apparent right arm injury. Reno’s relief corps now has worked six or more innings in a game on 11 occasions this season, and has allowed three or fewer runs in 10 of those games.
Slump Buster: The Aces offense scored seven runs last night, its most in seven games since an 8-7 win over Tacoma on August 27 at Greater Nevada Field. In going 2-4 over six contests before Saturday, Reno had totaled just 15 runs (2.5 rpg).
Aces Love to See Lee: Reno touched up Tacoma starter Zach Lee for seven earned runs on 10 hits (one home run) over 5.2 innings last night. In three starts this season against the Aces - all following his trade from the Dodgers to the Mari-ners on June 19 - Lee is 0-3 with a 12.86 ERA (20 ER/14.0 IP) and five home runs allowed.
Hits All Around: All nine players in the Aces batting order had at least one hit last night, with Kevin Medrano (3), Todd Glaesmann, Jack Reinheimer and Ildemaro Vargas (2 each) notching multi-hit games. Reinheimer recorded his 40th multi-hit effort of the season, matching the recently-promoted Kyle Jensen for the team lead in that category. Medrano’s three knocks marked his first multi-hit contest with the Aces this year, after he had 19 such games with Mobile (3 hits - 8 times, 2 hits - 11 times).
Winning in Washington: The Aces won three of four games during their first trip to Tacoma back in June before taking the first two games of this series. In going 38-24 all-time in road games against the Rainiers, Reno has posted a losing record at Cheney Stadium in just one season in franchise history, dropping five of eight games in 2012.
Jensen Gets the Call: Kyle Jensen was selected by Arizona before Saturday’s game, marking his first career promotion to the Major Leagues. In 133 games with Reno this season, the All-PCL performer batted .289 (144-for-498) with 30 home runs, 2 triples, 34 doubles, 120 RBI, 77 runs scored and 1 stolen base. The California native has set the Diamondbacks Triple-A single-season record for RBI, and is tied with Ernie Young of the 1999 Tucson Sidewinders for the most home runs in a year by a member of Arizona’s top affiliate. In 966 career Minor League games dating back to 2009, Jensen has a .266 average (910-for-3,427) with 178 home runs, 15 triples, 200 doubles, 631 RBI, 502 runs scored and 18 stolen bases.
PCL Manager of the Year: Nashville skipper Steve Scarsone was announced as the PCL Manager of the Year on Friday. He is in his fourth season with Oakland’s Triple-A affiliate, and his eighth year in the A’s system. The Sounds will record the franchise’s second-most wins in their 19-year PCL history, surpassed only by the 89 victories amassed in 2007, when Frank Kremblas was named PCL Manager of the Year. Nashville has seen 178 transactions on the year, with 60 different players appearing on the team’s roster.
PCL Most Valuable Player: El Paso outfielder Hunter Renfroe was named the PCL MVP on Thursday, the fourth San Diego Padres’ farmhand to take home the award and first since Sandy Alomar Jr. did so in 1989 with the Las Vegas Stars. The slugger is currently batting .306 with 29 homers and 104 RBI, to go along with 34 doubles, 5 triples, 94 runs scored, 22 walks, a .337 OBP and .896 OPS. Reno’s Kyle Jensen finished as the runner-up, despite being the fourth player in the PCL since 1993 to post 120-plus RBI in a single season.
PCL Pitcher of the Year: Fresno’s Brady Rodgers was voted as the PCL’s Pitcher of the Year on Wednesday. Through 22 starts, he went 12-4 with a 2.86 ERA over 132.0 innings, including 116 strikeouts against 23 walks. From May 21-August 10 spanning 12 starts, he won 11 consecutive decisions.
PCL Rookie of the Year: El Paso’s Carlos Asuaje was named the PCL Rookie of the Year on Tuesday. The second baseman is batting .325 (169-for-520) with 31 doubles, 11 triples, seven homers, 66 RBI and 95 runs scored in 130 games.
All-PCL Team Announced: Kyle Jensen was selected as the first baseman to the All-PCL Team, announced by the league on Monday. He owns the home run, RBI and total bases single-season records for Reno while becoming the 12th player in franchise history to be named to the All-PCL Team.
