V isit any internationally recognized artmuseum and you will nd the works of Renoir prominently featured. Indeed,

the artist’s works are considered among amuseum’s most precious, often serving as thefocal point of their Impressionist collection. And with good reason... the opportunity toacquire an authentic Renoir is almost non-existent...until now.

Les Voiliers au Bord de Mer (Haystacksby the Sea), is characteristic of the Renoir’sgenius. It exhibits a palette of color and easeof brushstroke that can only be associatedwith the man who would help fuel an artisticrevolution. It was painted by Renoir atthe apex of his artistic career in 1895 andcertainly appeals to both art connoisseursand novices alike.

Born in Limoges, France in 1841, Renoir initially exhibited a love for painting at theyoung age of 13. While apprenticed to a

painter of porcelain wares, he studied famousworks in the Louvre during his spare time.Mesmerized by the vivid palette of EugeneDelecroix and the works of the French rococomasters, Renoir embraced the use of vibrantcolors and lighthearted themes that wouldlater dene much of his life’s work.

At the age of 21, Renoir moved to Paris andenrolled at the prestigious Ecole des BeauxArts. The young artist studied under CharlesGleyre, whose other students included ClaudeMonet, Alfred Sisley and Jean-FredericBazille. Renoir began meeting and exhibitingwith his classmates, along with several other French artists, and became instrumental inestablishing the group widely known as theFrench Impressionists.

Working closely with Monet, Renoir beganexperimenting with portraying light and itseffect on his canvasses. Though he was theyoungest member of the “Impressionist”movement, Renoir recognized how a subjectwas constantly changing due to the dynamiceffects of light on color. Capturing a particular moment in time, or an “impression,” rather than a subjective scene, was central to thegroup’s philosophy. It would become the

most important artistic phenomenon of the19th century.Renoir began exhibiting his paintings

in Paris in 1864, but it wasn’t until the rstorganized Impressionist exhibit 10 yearslater that he gained widespread recognition. His lively, sensual paintings set him apartfrom his peers and, through his work, Renoir

created a modern, carefree image of theFrench bourgeoisie.

During the 1870s, Renoir enjoyed greatsuccess as a portraitist and an inspiringtrip to Italy in 1881 led him to develop theincreasingly singular artistic style with whichwe are most familiar today. Renoir’s soloexhibition in 1883 at the Durand-Ruel Galleryin Paris conrmed his position as one of theleading artistic masters of the day.

Relying heavily upon composition, linesand descriptive details, Renoir distinguishedhimself among his contemporaries. Hisintuitive use of color and expansivebrushstrokes, along with an acute attentionto his subject matter, have placed him amongthe nest painters in history.

By the turn of the century, the name Renoir was recognized around the world. Thesuccessful artist, suffering from rheumatism, moved to the warmth of the south of France

and by 1912 was conned to a wheelchair.Renoir continued to paint, and even sculpt, with the help of studio assistants, until hisdeath in 1919.

Renoir had the remarkable ability totranslate the ordinary into the extraordinary.A scene such as Les Voiliers au Bord de Mer becomes a masterpiece of beauty and light atthe hand of this amazing artist. Renoir is notonly one of the greatest of the Impressionistpainters, but he is considered one of thegreatest artists of all time. To acquire thispainting is to own a genuine piece of arthistory and a true masterpiece.
