Here we are, right at thebeginning of our traditional busyseason, with all the trials, longhours and hard work ahead of us.At this time of year I try toremind myself of the adage: ‘Howdo you eat an elephant? One biteat a time.’ The challenges of thenext few months seem dauntingwhen viewed from this angle, buttaken one day at a time, they willbe conquered, just as they alwayshave been.

Maybe it will help to focus on the PAIMA33rd annual convention that falls, as always,as the pace is beginning to slacken and wecan all take a breath or two. Tony, ourexecutive director, has been working reallyhard on the program for this year and hascome up with some exciting ideas andactivities for us all to enjoy. There is someinformation in this issue about Long Beach, the conference location. Next time we’llhave a full report on the fun-filled agendathat we have planned for you.

You will also notice in this issue that we havean exceptional number of new membersfeatured. I am delighted to welcome themall to our organization and look forward to

getting to know their representatives at ournext meeting. We are engaged in a programof encouraging new membership of PAIMA,for the right companies in the right areas, and must congratulate Tony and our regionaldirectors on their success. I know that wehave more new members to be featured inPAIMA Report next time as well.

Finally, I wanted to touch on the effect of thenew customs regulations in the UK that havegiven us all a few anxious moments sincetheir introduction. This new process hasimpacted relocation companies and clientstremendously. Clients are now responsiblefor applying for Transfer of Residence (ToR)and obtaining their Unique ReferenceNumber (URN) which will allow them toimport their household goods into Europe. Ifyou do not have a URN from your customeryou cannot book the ocean freight anddispatch shipments. It’s a big change soplease make sure your customers are awareof it in good time to avoid delays.

I wish you all a profitable and (largely) painfree moving season.

1 May, 2017

lthough the new year seemssomewhat old now, this is our firstissue of PAIMA Report in 2017.

One thing that struck me straight awaywas the number of new companies thathave joined the network in recent months.Very impressive.

I have written about some of the companies in thisissue and will write more later in the year. Of course,I always try to give a good impression of eachcompany and to advise the rest of the PAIMAmembership of their relative talents. But my abilityto do that depends on the information and photosI receive.

Photos are really important: they say a lot aboutyour company and the standards that it applies toits business. Some of the photos I receive are, frankly, poor. No matter what I write about acompany or how many superlatives I cram onto thepage, a poor photo will let it down. So, when yousend me photos, which I hope you will do inincreasing numbers, please make sure of thefollowing three things: they are in focus, relevant, and high resolution. They don’t have to beprofessionally shot, and pictures taken with phonesare often OK, but please ask yourself whether thispicture accurately reflects how you see yourbusiness. Others will make that judgement.

Thanks to all those companies that have sent instories for publication. If you don’t have a story inthe magazine it’s probably because you haven’tsent me anything. That’s a shame because I amsure there’s lots going on in your business to talkabout. How about setting yourself a challenge: toget a story published in these pages before the yearis out. Fame at last!

AIMA has a tonnage reportingsystem designed to record allshipping transactions between

members. Last year, PAIMA companiesexchanged over nine million lbs of traffic(about 1,250 TEUs) and around 50members took part in the program.

But there are still some companies who choose notto report tonnage, which is a shame, because itmeans that the figures don’t accurately reflect thevolume of traffic that passes through the network.

There are some very good reasons to reporttonnage. The first, and most obvious, is that youjust might win an award. If you are in the top twocompanies in your region you will be standing onthe stage in Long Beach receiving your trophy andthe warm applause of your assembled colleagues. But there’s more to it than that.

Not everyone can be a winner, but everyone canwin by reporting their tonnage. PAIMA members, looking for an agent in a particular location, willnaturally be keen to develop some reciprocal

traffic. If you report your tonnage, everyone cansee that you have traffic and there might be along-term relationship in the offing. If they thinkyou have no traffic to contribute, they might lookelsewhere.

There is also the greater good. To be statisticallyrelevant in terms of the growth of the organization,it’s important that every company declares itstonnage. That way it’s possible for the PAIMAoffice to calculate the development of theorganization and, in time, provide you withvaluable statistical information about the changesin shipping volumes globally.

Finally, people like to join successful organizationsand by demonstrating the volume of trafficcontrolled by the network, PAIMA can encourageothers to join and so expand the global reach.

Reporting tonnage is simple and no commerciallysensitive information is exchanged. If yourcompany does not currently report tonnage, please contact Antonio Tremols [email protected]

It’s all about qualitywith Kokusai

okusai Express inJapan is one of thelatest companies to join

PAIMA, expanding thecoverage of the network inthis important region. Here,Daniel Kuss explains whyhe thinks that servicequality is all that reallymatters.

Kokusai Express has been inbusiness since 1990 and nowholds a prominent position inJapan’s wider logistics industry.Household moving remains animportant part of the company’sservice offering, all of which iscarried out under the company’sthree guiding principles: accuracy, speed and affordable prices.

Daniel Kuss joined the company inAugust 2015 having spent around35 years in the moving industry, mainly in Japan, to developinternational awareness of thecompany. Joining PAIMA is partof that mission.

“We are extremely pleased to bea new member of the PanAmerican International MoversAssociation,” said Daniel. “Iattended the conference last yearand was made to feel verywelcome. My thanks to everyonefor their time and assistance: someI had known for years; some forjust a short time; and some peopleI had the pleasure to meet for thefirst time in New Orleans.”

Daniel said that he has noticed atrend recently in the movingbusiness towards a more quality-driven approach. Until recently, agents were always pushing forreciprocation on a pound-for-pound basis, but now Danielbelieves that the focus haschanged. “Companies now aremore service quality oriented withone objective in mind: qualitycare.”

This change pleases Danielbecause, historically, Japan hasnever been able to match inbound

and outbound tonnage. “The onlyway I could maintain a strongrelationship with agents aroundthe world was to sell the ‘qualityfactor’,” he said. “We wouldexceed everyone’s expectations sothat when the customer returnedthey would stay loyal to the origin

agent and ask them to arrangetheir move from Japan back totheir home county.” But still,Daniel said that many didn’t graspthe benefits of providing top-quality service.

However, in the last two years hebelieves that the tide has turned.“Everyone I speak to just wants totalk about quality, quality, quality,” he said. “Nobody asksabout reciprocation anymore. Isee this as the true way ofdeveloping stronger relationshipties between worldwideinternational moving companies. It’s all about quality.” Danielacknowledges that companiesshould all do their best to supporteach other with reciprocaltonnage, but that’s not the firstpriority.

Daniel said that he doesn’t expectcustomers to understand orappreciate the detail that goesinto a top-quality move. “But theyknow if they have received aquality move; one that exceededtheir expectations. This is what Ifeel is required in our industrytoday and with Kokusai ExpressCo., Ltd this is what agents andtheir customers will receive.”

But what is the definition of aquality move? Everyone says that

they provide only high-qualitymoves, but everyone’s opinion ofquality is different and perceivedin many different ways. ForDaniel, it’s simple: “It’s a processof building and sustainingrelationships by assessing, anticipating, and fulfilling thecustomer’s stated and impliedneeds while exceeding theirexpectations.” And don’t forget, for Daniel, the customer is boththe individual and the originagent. “We want everyone to bedelighted with the work we do,”he said.

1,000th Neopanamax vesselpasses through the expandedPanama Canal

ess than nine monthsafter the historicinauguration of the

expanded Panama Canal, managers have announcedthat the 1,000thNeopanamax vessel haspassed through thewaterway, highlighting theimportance of the route andcustomers’ continued faithin the safe, efficient servicethe Canal provides.

On Sunday, March 19, theMediterranean ShippingCompany's containership MSCAnzu (shown above) made thehistoric transit through theexpanded Canal, from the Atlanticto the Pacific Ocean. The Panama-flagged containership measures299.98 meters in length and48.23 meters in beam with acarrying capacity of 9,008 TEUs.

During its transit, the ship called atPanamanian port terminals on thePacific and Atlantic to dischargeand load cargo on the way to itsfinal destinations. Thecontainership is part of the SAWC-USA-NWC service betweenEurope, the United States and theSouth America West Coast thatwas consolidated last year to takeadvantage of the expandedPanama Canal.

Panama Canal AdministratorJorge L Quijano said, “Today’stransit represents a considerablemilestone, marking the industry’sstrong adoption of the expandedCanal and its successfuloperations thus far.”

The container segment accountsfor nearly half the transits throughthe Canal and represents itsprincipal source of traffic. 53% of

containership cargo transiting thewaterway does so using theexpanded Canal. As of March2017, the average number ofNeopanamax vessels transiting thenew lane per day is 5.9.

“Although the full impact will befelt gradually over time, we’re veryencouraged by the success of theexpanded Canal thus far as tradepatterns continue to shift in favorof the route,” said PanamaCanal’s Executive Vice President ofPlanning and BusinessDevelopment, Oscar Bazan.

Ports around the world, and inparticular along the US EastCoast, have already expanded orare in the process of deepeningand widening their channels toaccommodate the influx ofNeopanamax vessel traffic due tothe expansion. Many of theseports have witnessed record

tonnage months, including thePorts of Charleston, Philadelphiaand Savannah, whichexperienced record containervolume growths in January of thisyear.

epresentatives of exportersand importers from aroundthe world have joined forces

to advance and protect theirmembers' interests in the face ofunprecedented change in theglobal container shippingindustry.

The European Shippers' Council (ESC)has joined the Global Shippers’ Forum(GSF) to promote the findings of newresearch and analysis commissioned byGSF into the impacts of new 'alliances'being formed by container shipping linesand the growing use of so-calledmega-ships (those with more than18,000 TEU capacity).

Shippers fear that the contraction of theshipping market into a very small numberof tightly knit alliances, and the use ofmuch larger vessels, will reduce theirchoice of carrier and the quality of theservices delivered as carriers operatingwithin such arrangements cannotcompete amongst themselves with regardto the agreed capacity, sailing frequency, transit times, ports of call and servicelevel.

GSF's paper – The Implications of Mega-Ships and Alliances for Competition andTotal Supply Chain Efficiency: AnEconomic Perspective - makes a series ofrecommendations to competitionauthorities and regulatory bodies around

the world to mitigate the possibleimplications for competition in key linertrades arising from a reduced pool ofcompeting carriers.

It offers a range of options for nationaland regional competition authorities onhow to approach the regulation andoversight of the new shipping alliancesincluding:

• Competition authorities andregulators should ensure sufficientindependent competition on keytrade routes, given that theemergence of alliances has producedbarriers for new entrants and hasmade it nearly impossible forindependent lines to compete onsome trades;

• Competition authorities should repealexisting exemptions from antitrustlaws and implement effectivemonitoring of alliances, includingdirect intervention to preservecompetition where appropriate;

• Competition authorities should liaiseand align their practice and powersin that field.

GSF Chairman Bob Ballantyne said: "Iam delighted that ESC has joined GSF inorder to promote and defend shippers'interests at global level. GSF has madethe voice of shippers heard in the UNagencies responsible for the regulation ofthe maritime sector and supported many

of its member associations in advancingmore transparent regulation of thecontainer shipping industry in their homemarkets."

"ESC, with its network of contacts in theEuropean institutions, will bring furtherpressure to bear in the key Europeanliner markets. I very much look forwardto working with Denis Choumert and ESCmembers in the future pursuit of ourcommon goals of safe operations, openmarkets and environmentally responsibletransport.”

ESC Chairman Denis Choumert said:"ESC is pleased to be working with GSFon this critical issue of the necessaryevolution of the structure and regulationof global container shipping. As amember of GSF, we will use our contactsand networks in Europe and elsewhere inthe world to promote the report's findingsand demonstrate the value that jointworking can have in advancing shippers'interests more generally.”

Both chairmen call for shippers torespond to these threats andopportunities in a co-ordinated way andhope that shippers’ associations aroundthe world will be able to use the findingsand the analysis of this paper in theirrepresentations to their own governmentson behalf of their members.

Global InternationalRelocation in Portugal hasrecently joined PAIMA. Thecompany has beenrecognized as the country’smarket leader. SteveJordan spoke to the fatherand son partnership, JorgeDa Costa and JorgeGomes, to find out moreabout the company andwhy it joined PAIMA lastyear.

Jorge Da Costa (above) wasoriginally from Portugal buttravelled as a result of his father’scareer. His working life thereforebegan in Venezuela, Brazil andMiami and included 15 yearsworking in these countries.

The difficulties of working inVenezuela caused Jorge to lookfor other opportunities and hequickly identified that there wasa need for a professional movingcompany in Portugal. “We hadused agents in Portugal but theirservice was not as good as I feltit should be. There was a needfor quality in Portugal that waslacking at the time. I could see alot of opportunities there.”

So in 2008 Jorge returned, borrowed money from the banks, and started his own company inLisbon with just three people:Global International Relocation.“Right from the start our jointgoals were fast communicationand good quality workmanship,”he explained. “In the past there

had always been poorcommunications with agents andclients, materials and packingwere poor, as was timekeeping. We had to build something thatwould meet all the qualityrequirements of our customersand partners and clearlydifferentiate ourselves from ourcompetitors.”

Jorge always wanted to be themarket leader in Portugal and seta target to achieve his goalwithin six years. He achieved hisgoal. An official Portuguesebusiness report has GlobalInternational Relocation as therevenue market leader. But Jorgehas done much more.

Significantly his son, JorgeGomes (right), also made the tripfrom Venezuela to join thecompany in 2012. He had beenexercising his love of cars bystudying mechanical engineeringat university in Venezuela, however he soon realised thatthe opportunities lay elsewhere.

“I learned a lot. It’s important to study and I alwaysloved cars. It was natural for me,” he said. But he’sgreatly enjoying the new family business and hasbeen beguiled by the relocation industry as have somany before him.

And it is now very much a relocation company, notjust moving. The company has recently hired newstaff so that it can offer DSP services. It now has fourlocations: Lisbon, Porto, Algarve and one indowntown Lisbon that is home to its relocation andimmigration departments as it is close to the capital’sconsulate offices. Between the four depots thecompany employs 74 people, and more still duringthe busy summer months, and puts out up to 15 crewsa day in Lisbon alone.

“We are still growing and still investing,” said JorgeDa Costa. “We are increasing our facilities to includenew divisions for mobility, fine arts and pets.We provide a full range of services.”

Global is already a member of FIDI and OMNI so whyhas the company now decided to join PAIMA as well?Jorge Gomes said that he saw the benefit of PAIMAmembership specifically to help the company grow itsLatin American business. It’s a region that has playeda big part in both his and his father’s lives, so it makessense that they will have and want to maintain theclosest possible relationships there. There’s none betterthan PAIMA to help them do just that.

o-called ‘range anxiety’ has beena major inhibitor to the take up ofelectrically powered vehicles, with

fears of running out of power whilesearching for an elusive chargingpoint putting off all but the greenestof drivers. But all that seems about to

change thanks to a commitment by aconsortium of European major motormanufacturers to dramaticallyincrease the number and efficiency ofcharging stations in the next fewyears.

BMW Group, Daimler AG, Ford MotorCompany and Volkswagen Group with Audiand Porsche have signed a Memorandum ofUnderstanding to create the highest-poweredelectric vehicle charging network in Europe. The goal is the quick build-up of a sizablenumber of stations to enable long-range travelfor Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) drivers. Thiswill be an important step towards facilitatingmass-market BEV adoption.

The projected ultra-fast, high-poweredcharging network with power levels up to 350kW will be significantly faster than the mostpowerful charging system deployed today. Thebuild-up is planned to start this year. An initialtarget of about 400 sites in Europe is planned.

By 2020, customers should have access tothousands of high-powered charging points. The goal is to enable long-distance travelthrough open-network charging stations alonghighways and major thoroughfares, which hasnot been feasible for most BEV drivers to date. The charging experience is expected to evolveto be as convenient as refueling atconventional fuel stations.

The network will be based on CombinedCharging System (CCS) standard technology. The planned charging infrastructure expandsthe existing technical standard for AC and DCcharging of electric vehicles to the next level ofcapacity for DC fast charging, with up to 350kW. BEVs that are engineered to accept thisfull power of the charge stations can rechargebrand-independently in a fraction of the timeof today’s BEVs. The network is intended toserve all CCS equipped vehicles to facilitatethe BEV adoption in Europe.

here isn’t a day goes by that wedon’t hear something about howman is destroying his own

environment. We are, as a result, indanger of suffering fromenvironmental information overloadwhere the messages come in so thickand fast that we don’t hear any ofthem.

But consider this. There have been manycases in history when the environment hasflexed its muscles and required life to adjustto its demands; but there has never been atime when life has modified its environment.Never!

Juan Peralta was one of the founding fathersof PAIMA and an ecologist. Before the wholeworld (almost) jumped on the bandwagonand recognized that there might be aproblem around the corner, Juan was alreadyon it, steering the horses and banging thedrum.

The PAIMA award that bears his name is acelebration of those organizations that dowhat they can, in fact more than anyonemight expect, to protect the environment thathas allowed mankind to thrive. We should alltry our best. Is your company doing enough?

Let’s be frank about it. We are not trying tosave the planet. It’s been here for 4.5 billionyears and it isn’t going anywhere soon. It’stough. But it’s what we call a ‘Goldilocks’planet: not too hot and not too cold, it’s just

right. The planet is tough, but the atmosphereis fragile. The world’s governments areconstantly talking about keeping the rise inthe Earth’s temperature down to 2°C. Itdoesn’t sound like much does it? Who caresif it’s a bit warmer? But 55 million years agothe mean temperature was just 5°C hotterthan today and there were forests inAntarctica! When it comes to globalwarming, a little goes a long way.

And to those who say the warming is just partof the natural cycle: maybe you are right, butaccording to geologists the 5°C rise tookaround 20 million years to evolve; we’vemanaged to get 40% of the way there in justa few generations. Maybe it’s nothing to dowith us, but it’s a heck of a coincidence. Doyou want to take the risk?

So that’s why PAIMA has the Juan Peraltaaward. To qualify for consideration yourcompany needs to do something that reducesyour impact on the environment by reusing, recycling or reducing your consumption ofprecious resources. When you do, youshould be proud of your efforts and let PAIMAknow. You might be next year’s winner.

But don’t do it for the award. Don’t do it forJuan. Do it because the Earth is our home,it’s where we live and we should all play ourpart in taking care of it. Do it for yourgrandchildren.

Still, the trophy would look good on the shelf, wouldn’t it?

his October it will be time topack your shorts and sunglassesas the PAIMA Conference heads

for the pom-pom palms and warmsunshine of Long Beach, California.

Our conference hotel, the five-star HyattRegency, is only a few steps away from thewaterfront with its many attractions, includingthe 1930s Cunard liner Queen Mary, nowpermanently moored nearby, and the world-famous Aquarium of the Pacific. Oh, andthere’s a very nice beach too; it’s seven mileslong. No wonder they call the place LongBeach!

The modern history of Long Beach goes backto 1784 when the first white settler, ManuelNieto, received a Spanish Land Grant andestablished a huge ranch there. The land hadpreviously been inhabited by the nativeShoshoni Indians. Over 100 years later in1897, the town was incorporated as a cityand became a resort; largely because of theamazing views from almost every vantagepoint. In 1921 oil was discovered, bringingenormous wealth and prosperity to thepeople who had settled in the area. Today oilremains one of Long Beach’s main industrieswith nodding donkies and storage tanks stillin abundance in many parts of the city. However, oil has largely given way tocontainer traffic with the Port of Long Beachbeing the USA’s second largest shippingport.

Long Beach is still a prosperous, vibrant city with a predominantlyyoung population, over 50% ofDowntown residents are under35 years of age. The city attractsaround six million visitors a year, both for business and pleasure, thanks to its all-year-round sunshine andworld-class conference venues, not tomention its close proximity to the manyattractions of its giant neighbor, Los Angeles.

Long Beach Marathon: 8 OctoberIf you’re feeling energetic you might like toenter the annual Long Beach Marathon, which this year is taking place on 8 October. There’s also a half-marathon if you fancy aslightly less demanding challenge. Both racesbegin and end in the Shoreline Village areaof the city and take a route throughDowntown Long Beach with stunning viewsof Long Beach Harbor, sandy beaches andBelmont Shore. The event attracts around25,000 entrants and you can book yourplace at www.runlongbeach.com.

CyclingLong Beach is one of the most bicyclefriendly cities in the US, with the cityauthorities creating dedicated cycle waysand safe cycle routes in many areas duringthe last few years. The city of Long Beach hasfive major bike paths covering over 60 miles. The 3.1-mile Shoreline Pedestrian Bikepath

runs along the ocean from Shoreline Villageto Belmont Shore. Walkers haven’t beenforgotten either, a study in 2011 rankedLong Beach the eleventh most walkable of thefifty largest cities in the US.

FoodAfter all that exercise, you’ll probably beready to eat. Long Beach has some of thebest seafood restaurants in the state ofCalifornia, so if fish is your thing, now’s thetime to explore the tempting menus andindulge your culinary fantasies. Herb-brinedsea bream, Loch Duart salmon and grilledlobster are all there to enjoy. But if fish is notyour idea of gastronomic heaven, don’tworry, there are steakhouses, Chinese,Japanese and Italian restaurants, along withthe usual fast food offerings, so there’ssomething for everyone. Add to that thedozens of bars in Downtown Long Beachand you’re bound to find a place to relaxand enjoy your time in this city by the ocean.

amien Seaman, BrandManager, buzzmove.com(above), looks at the cost

of online advertisingcompared with using a leadgeneration service.

We all know that many customersthese days expect to compare andbuy everything on the web – fromcar insurance to utilities to … well, removal services.

More than 70% of UK Internetusers go online to compare prices, according to recent research. Andaround half of all onlinepurchases are done on the phone.Even when a customer calls amover directly, the odds are thatthey’ve found the number onGoogle, and probably using theirsmartphone.

Google dominates the onlinesearch market, with just under87% market share in the UK.It’s pretty much a monopoly. Thatmeans if a business doesn’t showup on Google search, it might aswell not exist.

Of course, movers can optimizetheir websites, publish blog postsand try to get links so theynaturally appear at the top oforganic search results. But to dothis successfully takes months.Months to get right. Months to getlinks. Months to rank highly. And

months for all this effort to convertinto more website visitors. Andthat’s if a company gets it right!

So let’s look at a much faster wayof ranking high on Google: paidadvertising, otherwise known asPay Per Click (PPC), or GoogleAdwords. For those who don’tknow, this is when you set up ashort advert to show up whenpeople search for specific‘keywords’. Every time someoneclicks on the ad, you pay.

Some removal companies do thisvery well, and some larger firmsprobably have a dedicatedagency doing it for them. But still, many in the removals industrydon’t realise how much Googleadvertising costs. For example, how much does it cost to bid forthe keyword ‘removalcompanies’?

RoughlyUS$12.22. That’show much youpay each timesomeone clicks onan advertcontaining thatkeyword. Google adsusing the phrase‘house removals’ willcost you US$8.68 perclick. The phrase ‘movinghouse’ will set you backUS$7.40.

On average, out of every 100people who click on one of yourGoogle ads, five will contact you.So, let’s take the middle exampleabove – ‘house removals’. Togenerate five leads you need topay for 100 clicks, or US$868.

And, in most cases, you’ll stillwant to survey the property to winthe business. Feedback from ourremoval company partners is thatthey can typically convert between50% - 80% of the people theysurvey. Taking that into account, ifyou survey all five PPC leadsyou’ve got a good chance ofwinning three of them. That’s nowUS$868 for three jobs. In otherwords, you’ve spent US$289 perpaying job.

Contrast this with the cost of usinga good lead generation site.Obviously the price you pay for alead varies according to whereyou are and which lead providersyou’re working with. But let’sassume each lead costs youUS$7.42. Now for 100 leadsyou’re paying US$742. Now let’sassume that you can contact 25%of those.

I’m basing this on the fact that wehave lots of companies tell usthey’re converting that many leadsto paying jobs. Now you’repaying US$742 for 25 leads. Ifyou survey and convert three outof every five leads, you’re nowpaying US$742 for 15 jobs. That’s US$49.47 per paying job.If managed the right way, leadgeneration is a cheaper way towin jobs than doing your ownonline advertising on Google. Asthese figures have shown, it canbe a lot cheaper.

here are a number of ways thecriminals can get to you. Here aresome of them:

Phishing: is an e-mail sent to a randome-mail address purporting to be from areputable company to try and get individualsto reveal personal information such aspasswords, credit card numbers, etc.

Spear phishing: is a more targeted form ofphishing where an e-mail is designed toappear to come from someone the recipientknows and trusts, for example a colleague, business manager or human resourcesdepartment, and can include a subject line orcontent that is specifically tailored to thevictim’s known interests or industry.

DoS attack: DoS is short for denial-of-service and is where the perpetrator tries tomake a machine or network unavailable. Thisis typically accomplished by flooding thetargeted machine or resource with superfluousrequests in an attempt to overload systemsand prevent some, or all, legitimate requestsfrom being fulfilled.

Ransomeware: is a type of malicioussoftware that’s designed to lock a user out oftheir computer. A fee is then demandedbefore access is returned.

Malware: This is software that is specificallydesigned to disrupt or damage a computersystem. It’s important to try to protect yourself. Here are some suggestions that might help.

Educating staff about the hazards of cybercrime is very important. For example, not toopen e-mails from an unknown or suspicioussource and if they do, not to open anyattachments. A common example is an e-mailwith the attachment of a PDF invoice. Thesame applies for links, these should not beclicked on. A good check is to hover thecurser over a link to see if what’s written inthe e-mail actually matches the destination linkshown when you’re hovering over it.

Make sure your WiFi is secure. Potentially, anyone that can access your WiFi has accessto your data so ensure any WiFi connection ispassword protected. For example, someonemoving into a new block of flats gainedaccess to several of the neighbors’ routers thatweren’t secure and changed the passwordsso the owners could no longer access them.

Software should be updated regularly. Youshould ensure that all operating systems andsoftware are kept current by applying thelatest software updates and patches, and thatantivirus software definitions are kept up todate. Microsoft is a particular target forhackers.

Your company should have a strongpassword policy so that all passwords usedcontain a mixture of uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers and characters. Also, don’t use generic company e-mailaddresses such as info@xxx or enquiries@xxxas these are easily guessed.

Backups should be kept and tested regularly.Restores should be tested: there is no point inhaving a backup if you can’t use it. And ifyou use cloud services, ask your providerhow they protect your data and ask themabout their backup and restore policies.

You should have firm policies in place todetail what to do in the event of a cyberattack. Work out how long, if you areunfortunate enough to be targeted, yourbusiness could survive if it was brought to ahalt. The longer a cyber attack takes toresolve, the more costly it is.

Finally, you should consider obtaining ISO27001 - the international Standard thatdescribes best practice for an informationsecurity management system (ISMS). Thisaccreditation demonstrates to your customersthat you are following information securitybest practices and working to protect yourself, and therefore their data, from attack.

They arecoming toget you!

Dan Brown from MoveMan explainshow cyber crime can disrupt yourbusiness and what you can do about it.

he first quarter of 2017 closedwith the completion of two of theindustry’s major business

conferences: FIDI in Dubai and OMNIin The Seychelles. Both weresuccessful in their own way and bothtotally different. FIDI had around600 delegates in the JW Marriothotel, the world’s tallest hotel (butwhat else would you expect inDubai).

Speakers included Jamil Qureshi, aperformance enhancing psychologist, speaking about change management; andMohammed Murad, a local entrepreneur, talking at the 39 Club conference aboutleadership. There were also two paneldiscussions: one talking about the problem of

shipping density and the effect the recentSOLAS regulations have had on the way inwhich jobs are invoiced; the second, hostedby ERC, exploring the future of the mobilityindustry. All sessions were well attendedhowever there was, as usual, a great many ofthe delegates who preferred to conduct theirown one-to-one meetings while the businesssessions were in progress. Other businesssessions included: anti-bribery and corruptionmanagement; data protection management;and professional guidelines workshop.

Social events included the obligatory golftournament; sightseeing tours of Dubai andAbu Dhabi; the Yellow Boats tour for thosewho didn’t mind getting a little damp; a tripto a Dubai nightclub for the youngsters of the39 Club; and the grand FIDI Gala dinner.

The OMNI conference is an altogetherdifferent type of event. The atmosphere inThe Seychelles lends itself to a much slowerpace. OMNI is where the senior managersand owners of some of the world’s leadingmoving and relocation companies cometogether in quiet reflection. They talk, swapideas and take a more helicopter view oftheir businesses and the industry as a whole.Business cards are rarely exchanged. Therewere only around 100 delegates (aboutaverage for OMNI) but the combinedwisdom and experience was withoutcompare and the environment wasspecifically designed to allow creative juicesto flow and innovation to thrive.
