  I was asked by the general secretary whole sale

fruit market Kot lakh pat, Lahore to report the current condition specially problems and needs of the whole sale fruit market.

ReportReport:: Fruit Market in Kot lakh pat considered as a

largest fruit market in Asia.

Developed more than two decades ago and is fully functional yet.

It starts its business from 6:00 a.m. till 02:00 p.m. of seven days of week.

The local mandi for fruits acts as a central link between producers and consumers.

Although it is the best whole sale fruit market in Lahore but it is facing numerous problems.

After interviewing and investigation from different buyers and sellers we came to know some other problems.

No fix prices ,pick pockets and Illegal entrance taxes are creating many problems.

No proper place to store extra fruits.

In monsoon all the water comes down in market and consequently creates a mud.

Biggest whole sale market in Lahore but still no proper parking.

According to the current situation security measurement is not satisfactory.

No fix price for same fruit of same quality kept by different sellers.

No proper places allocated for sellers.

No proper place in market for storage of extra fruit and lack of refrigerated transport.

No proper parking place for buyers and dealers.

The market is too narrow and consequently there is always rush of people.

Security measurements are not up to mark.

No proper sanitation and drainage system.

There is an illegal entrance tax for vehicles while entering in the market.

Some pickpockets clean their hands on buyer's pockets.

Suggestions: Suggestions:

A committee should be made to have check and balance on prices.

Each seller should be allocated some permanent place in market.

There should be proper cold storages and warehouses in the market.

Parking place should be enhanced.

The inner portion of market should be increase so that customers or buyers may easily access to their certain goods.

In the current circumstances security measurements should be increased.

Sanitation and drainage system should be proper especially in rainy season.

Entrance tax should be expunged.

There should be some security personals in civil dress to have an eye on public.

Encourage use of cardboard packaging.

Encourage use of paper bags and proper disposal of used polyethylene packing.

Summary:Summary:

The fruit market of Kot lakh pat is no doubt the biggest whole sale fruit market in Lahore. People from the whole city and also from near by town come here for buying the fresh and cheaper fruit.

The marketing margins are equally shared between costs and profits.

Problems of sanitation, extra fruit storage, improper drainage, rush of people security measurements, illegal tax, pick pockets are all some major problems of this market.

an effort is not made to sensitize the local decision-makers and enhance their technical skills to identify and address the problems on time, the whole food supply and distribution system may collapse.
