They say that when the economy is in regression, that the industrial fabric and society in general stop giving priority to environmental questions. Well, Ecoembes and its 12,000 member companies are proof that this assertion is not entirely correct. And that is evident if we consider our commitment to overall sustainability and to protecting the environ-ment. Add to this the great team of professionals who comprise the front line of what we like to call “the Ecoembes spirit”. Thanks to companies, em-ployees, local and regional governments and citi-zens, we can feel very proud of our successful tran-sition toward a society of recycling in which 71.9% of household packaging is recycled.

We see sustainability as a concept that must en-compass everything, eventually becoming the overriding theme in every activity, especially for a company like Ecoembes, whose main mission is to take care of the environment, the place where we live. It is thanks to the efforts of all those who are a part of this cycle, of those who make possible the success of this model of shared public-private responsibility, that we are reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the consumption of raw materials, kilowatts of energy and the water that we use.

We are satisfied with the results achieved in the past year, but we know that society and the envi-ronment demand more from us.

That is why we are working toward being able to announce in late 2014, and in subsequent years, that the recycling rate for household packaging waste has gone up yet again and that we have once more exceeded the targets set by the European Union. It is what society, our member companies and, of course, citizens, without whom this reality would be unattainable, are asking of us.

Because recycling is the best way to commit our-selves to environmental values that in addition to driving the economy, create over 42,600 jobs and make our environment sustainable. We are, with-out a doubt, on the right track.

Company-wide sustainability

Over 16 years ago now we started on this journey, and we have achieved many things along the way. Today we add to that by presenting the 2013 report of our activity, this being the first time we do so in keeping with the recommendations of the Global Reporting Initiative’s (GRI) Sustainability Reporting Guidelines. As expected, we continue putting peo-ple first in our approach because we believe we are all responsible for taking care of our environment through transparency and dialogue. From the last employee at Ecoembes to the citizen who sepa-rates packaging waste at home, we are all part of the great commitment to the environment in this common household that is the planet that we live on.

Today more than ever we have to appreciate what we have achieved, what we stand for as an orga-nization and what we mean for Spanish society. In 2013 we recycled 71.9% of household packaging, yet another yearly increase that takes us well be-yond where European regulations require us to be and one step closer to reaching our goal of 80% by the year 2020.

Moreover, year after year we are working to make the sorting and recycling process for household packaging increasingly more efficient and tar-get-oriented, a task in which our work to promote environmental awareness and education is both necessary and essential. That is why each year we

launch over 300 awareness campaigns and reach over 750,000 school children thanks to our environ-mental education programs.

The year 2013 also saw us work even closer with all of the groups involved in the recycling process: companies, local and regional governments, se-lection plants, recycling facilities and, of course, citizens, without whom our task of caring for the environment would be impossible. We talk about people first not only for all those who make the recycling process possible, but also because Ecoembes’s activity would be inconceivable with-out its employees, the people who provide their val-ues and their knowledge to make our company a place of cooperation, open to all and offering great potential for professional and personal growth.

The milestones achieved must be, first and foremost, an incentive to continue forward in the future. Be-cause thanks to the power of cooperation, we are, all of us, building the best possible future.

With people, for people

OURPERSPECTIVE

Ecoembes’s corporate values are its essence, its identify-ing trait. Its purely environmental mission along with so-ciety’s increasing concern with caring for the environment in the current financial context have served to turn corpo-rate social responsibility into an essential tool for adapting to new times and changing circumstances. The Ecoembes 2013 Annual Report highlights the progress made in the financial, social and environmental aspects, in keeping with the company’s 2012-2015 CSR Master Plan, and ma-terialized in the Five Commitments to its stakeholders.

OUR PERSPECTIVE

Ecoembes sees corporate social responsibility as a guide to orient the company to being responsible, competitive and efficient. The company realizes that its activity must contribute to the sustainable devel-opment of the society it works in, seeking operational excellence and achieving the recognition and trust of its stakeholders.

The company’s role as the manager of the SIG re-quires close dialogue and cooperation with other participants in order to ensure a balance between the interests and capabilities of everyone involved while fine tuning the way the system operates.

The shareholders and top management promote a corporate culture that is ethical and responsible, one that integrates the social, environmental and financial risks and opportunities. This all translates into a se-ries of commitments with the stakeholders that de-termine how the company is managed.

• Ecoembes is committed to process efficiency and quality in a way that goes beyond legal requirements. It is essential that its tasks be carried out at a reason-able cost. We realize the importance of this premise, which is an essential condition for long-term success

and for the continued sustainability of the system.

• The commitment to the environment is interwoven with the company’s mission. Innovation is the tool that Ecoembes is using to constantly improve in this re-gard.

• The people that make up Ecoembes give it its spirit. It is the employees, the gears who coordinate and direct everyone involved in recycling, who make the complex mechanism of the SIG function.

• Ecoembes also encourages communications with its main stakeholders by establishing a dynamic, transparent dialogue that provides value to all of the interested parties. It sponsors environmental and so-cial projects that generate value for society.

• This is all driven from the highest positions at the company through the corporate governance struc-ture and its commitment to ethics.

The Ecoembes 2012-2015 CSR Master Plan contains the courses of action to be taken by the company to comply with these commitments. As a result, the company reports its performance based on the prog-ress made toward said commitments.

COMMITMENT TO ETHICAL MANAGEMENT AND GOOD CORPORATE GOVERNANCE1

Already in 2012 the company set for itself the ambi-tious challenge of becoming a reference organiza-tion in the area of Corporate Governance, launching a project to promote aspects such as transparency, a culture of internal oversight, the make-up and op-eration of its governing bodies, protecting the rights of shareholders and its relationships with its stake-holders.

As part of this process, in 2013 Ecoembes started to restructure its governing bodies as well as the inter-nal oversight mechanisms relating to processes, fi-nancial information and penal responsibility, adopting the best practices in the industry and using as its ref-erence the Unified Code of Good Governance for pub-licly-listed companies. Ecoembes shareholders have set an example by desiring to work toward transpar-ency and toward efficient management. This has al-

lowed the SIG to develop a model to follow in terms of Corporate Governance and ethics. The new code will be reported and implemented in 2014. Its focus will be on the company’s corporate responsibility, on its vision and values and on the commitments made to its stakeholders. As for the existing code, no reports were received in 2013 of any non-compliances.

In 2013 Ecoembes worked to optimize its internal oversight of risks related to the generation of finan-cial information (SCIIF). This is a constantly improving process that reflects the goals and risks of establish-ing effective and efficient internal controls at a cost that is affordable to the organization. A internal over-sight system was set up that has clearly specified ob-jectives, thus facilitating the identification of risks that can lead to material errors and promoting a culture of risk management and control at the operational level.

In addition, the operation of the internal information and control systems are constantly reviewed not only from a financial standpoint. This involves inventorying all of the audits performed in an effort to monitor the areas of improvement detected and ensure that all of the company’s processes are audited at specific in-tervals.

In 2013 Ecoembes also set up a model for preventing criminal risks that could affect legal persons, imple-

Ecoembes improved aspects such as transparency, the culture of internal oversight, the make-up and operation of governing bodies, the protection of shareholders’ rights and its engagement with its various stakeholders. It optimized Internal Controls involving the risks associated with the generation of financial information (SCIIF).

Ecoembes also established a model for preventing criminal risks.

menting the controls necessary to prevent the crimes contained in the Penal Code.

We should note that Ecoembes has an Audit Commit-tee that oversees all of the company’s internal con-trol tasks. This provides an infrastructure on which to build the control mechanisms, one that facilitates the evaluation of risks, includes communications, the reporting and identification of incidents, and is able to adapt to constantly changing regulations and market conditions. The Committee provides value to man-agement through its recommendations.

The high productivity of its internal and external processes, along with its control of the packaging cycle, serve to highlight Ecoembes’s commitment to efficiency, quality and rigor. The sustainability of the SIG is only possible by guaranteeing its optimal operation. COMMITMENT TO PROCESS EFFICIENCY AND QUALITY2

Member companiesIn 2013 there were a total of 12,000 companies and 1.7 mil-lion tons of packaging in the SIG. Compared to 2012, this was a 0.4% decrease in the number of companies and a 2.55% drop in packaging material, the main cause being the socioeconomic context. As for the fees for the Green Dot, the symbol that identifies packaging in the Ecoembes SIG and through which member companies help offset the cost of selective collection incurred by local handlers, they did not go up in 2013. This was made possible by Ecoem-bes’s efficiency-based management.

Ecoembes uses various tools to combat fraud and identi-fy companies violating the Packaging Law: visits to points of sale, investigation of different databases and reporting to local governments. In 2013 Ecoembes reported irreg-ularities involving 234 companies, and 260 that were not complying with the Packaging Law became members.

Also, to verify that member companies are properly calculating their contribution to the SIG and to ensure the quality of the information provided to local govern-ments, Ecoembes reviews the annual packaging dec-larations filed by member companies. In 2013, 93% of the tons reported through the SIG was verified, which helped detect 5.1 million undeclared euros.

Selective collectionThe total number of agreements in effect on 31 Decem-ber 2013 was 114 and provided coverage for more than 99% of the population to sort paper-cardboard and for 98.5% to sort packaging. This means that 47 million res-idents can separate their packaging waste and deposit it in the 553,989 yellow and blue containers that are spread out all over Spain. To enhance the public’s participa-tion, 323 awareness campaigns were organized in 2013, which contributed to each person depositing an average of 12 kg of light packaging in the yellow containers and 14.6 kg of paper and cardboard in the blue ones.

Ecoembes also promoted efficiency in selective collection by increasing the capacity of yellow containers, replacing

less efficient collection systems with side-loading systems and handling waste in bulk to allow for more streamlined waste management.

Ecoembes and the Ecoembes Chair at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid also carried out studies to define the number and location of containers based on each munici-pality’s unique characteristics. Ecoembes cooperated with local governments in 2013 over the course of 12 such opti-mization studies.

As the manager of the SIG, Ecoembes engages in mon-itoring activities. In 2013 the company reviewed the con-tract documentation for 83 Management Units and car-ried out service quality checks that covered 73.75% of the population with acces to the light packaging collection containers

Material selectionThere are 96 plants for sorting light packaging. Over 50% of these are automated and provide 74% of the resulting separated materials. In 2013 there were 11 studies that considered the capacity, performance, equipment sort-ing quality and mass balances at various plants. There was also a study conducted in concert with the Associ-ation of Municipal Packaging Recovery and Selection Plants (ASPLARSEM) to identify general energy savings measures.

The training plan at Light Packaging Sorting Plants and at Bulk Trash Treatment Plants for the Triage of Plastic Packaging has been in place for over 10 years. In 2013 a total of 27 training courses were given at 14 facilities. In addition, Ecoembes reviews the quality at the plants through QC inspections. Over the course of 2013 7,505 QC inspections and 3,877 quality checks were made at 259 selection, recovery and recycling facilities.

RecyclingEvery recycling company that opts to take charge of any materials recovered for recycling must first undergo a

certification process. In 2013 there were 191 such cer-tification audits, with a total of 165 companies being cer-tified during the year. If we consider that some of these companies are approved to handle more than one mate-rial type, this number rises to 384.

There were also 157 traceability control audits, which cross-checked both the origin and final destination of 100% of the materials managed by Ecoembes.

Ecoembes uses public procedures overseen by indepen-dent outside parties to award the materials sorted at the light packaging selection plants. In 2013, 94.36% of these materials were provided to recycling facilities using an Ecoembes procedure that is ISO 9001 and 14001 certi-fied by AENOR. The company had 419 contracts with 43 recoverers/recycling facilities to handle light packaging. The remaining 5.64% was awarded to recyclers by local governments.

Out of homeEcoembes, in cooperation with various organizations, en-gages in numerous projects to recover packaging waste at places or events where large crowds gather and where such actions have a large effect in raising public awareness for the environment. These projects do not interfere with municipal collection services.

These projects enhance the recycling message in areas of everyday life that are removed from the home, such as music festivals, football games, leisure areas, restaurants and universities, turning these places into a practical ex-ample of good environmental practices in waste manage-ment.

In 2013 there were a total of 125 additional collection proj-ects (24 were launched during the year in places like the Bernabeu and Camp Nou stadiums, the Faunia nature park in Madrid, the Banco de Santander Financial City and the Alicante and La Laguna university campuses).

Technology at the service of efficiencyPackaging declaration campaign: Fewer problems thanks to improvements made to the Ecosoft software package.

Contracts website and portal (e-billing): A new version of the contract management website was successfully launched. This website is essential to the efficient handling of the information associated with the packaging waste collection and sorting processes.

Prevention: A new version of the application for managing prevention measures was made available to member companies in 2013 that managed to reduce the number of incidents and significantly improved the process of offering and verifying measures.

Internal management applications: applications aimed at improving the efficiency of the company’s internal processes. Of note is the new application for managing communications campaigns with local agencies and the automatic calculation of output forecasts for the sorting process.

New technologies for new offices: IP telephony was installed, with the associated cost reduction. These new installations at Ecoembes are better equipped for teleconferences and connectivity.

Committed to Quality The UNE-EN ISO 9001:2008 certification was expand-ed to every Ecoembes process with the incorporation of the contract management and packaging waste prevention processes.

Customer Service: The Customer Service was trans-ferred to a single toll-free telephone number (86,000 calls /year).

Ecoembes’s commitment to the environment is a strategic pillar of its management. That is why the company relies on innovation throughout the packaging life cycle and on efficiency in the collection and recycling processes. Thanks to its manage-ment model, which is based on efficiency and sustainability criteria, 14 million tons of household packaging has been recycled since 1998, avoiding the emission of 18.8 million tons of CO2 into the atmosphere and saving 15.8 million MWh and 375 million cubic meters of water.

Prevention measures adopted in 2012-2013

Ecoembes complements its environmental efforts by encouraging companies to adopt prevention and ecodesign measures in order to manufacture increasingly sustainable packaging.

2013 was the second year of the 5th Corporate Prevention Plan (PEP), with 2,385 companies tak-ing place, representing 92% of all the packaging in the Ecoembes SIG. The ratio of Kr to Kp, or pack-aging weight per kilo of packaged product, went

down with respect to 2011 by 2.5% thanks to the implementation of over 6,500 prevention mea-sures by companies participating in the plan over the past year..

Verification of measuresAs it does every year, Ecoembes held a campaign to verify the prevention measures implemented. A total of 1,069 prevention measures associated with 300 companies involved in the Plan were audited in 2013, with 82% passing the verification process.

InformationEcoembes informs the packaging industry of the best practices for reducing the environmental impacts of the various phases of the packaging cycle. It also makes available to companies the tools to promote ecodesign. The following activities were launched over the course of 2013:

• Training activities: The third edition of the online course “Packaging and the Environment for Profes-sionals” was launched, and ecodesign and ecolabel-ing workshops were held by the UNESCO Chair in Life Cycle and Climate Change.

• Publishing of a guide “Is packaging a good am-bassador of your environmental commitment?” This guide helps companies communicate their environ-mental packaging success stories.

• Studies like “Trends in Packaging, New Materi-als and Formats”, which was presented at the Em-pak show. Carried out by Ecoembes in concert with ITENE, it highlights how the driving forces behind new packaging trends are consumers, the distribution chain, and legislative and technical developments.

• Tours of selection and recycling plants: the goal being to show how packaging waste is handled.

CooperationThe role of good practices in prevention and ecode-sign also includes government. On the occasion of the publication of the National Waste Prevention Plan, a study was carried out in 2013 to identify the initiatives in packaging waste prevention being taken by governments nationally and internationally.

Innovation

Environmental ManagementEcoembes implemented a UNE-EN ISO 14001:2004 Environmental Management System that ensures its activity is in compliance with environmental laws and the strictest standards. The system’s maturity and soundness lets the company achieve its targets and the mission for which it was cre-ated, while at the same time minimizing the environmen-tal impacts stemming from its activity. All of the compa-ny’s processes were included within its certification scope from the start. With the expansion of the system’s scope in 2013 to include the Barcelona and Seville offices, Ecoembes now identifies, evaluates and tracks all of the environmental aspects involved in managing the SIG and the activities in its offices. Moving the headquarters to a new location implied an ad-ditional effort to comply with environmental requirements.

Ecoembes engages in research studies aimed at innovation in both packaging design and in the waste collection, selection and recycling phases.

1. COLLECTION, PROCESSING AND RECYCLING OPTIMIZATION AND IMPACT ANALYSIS

This area includes studies and projects involving the collection, processing and recycling processes. Of special significance in recent years has been the application of the Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) methodology.

• Ecoembes partners with material suppliers to conduct recycling studies. Of note is the project to manufacture asphalt modified with plastic waste products in cooperation with Cicloplast.

• Work also continued on the project between the Government of the Canary Islands and Ecoembes on advanced identification and positioning tools for selective collection. The project being conducted with the Castellón Provincial Government Office to study automatic control technologies for filling containers was completed.

• The Packaging Life Cycle Observatory at the Universidad Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona held training and communications courses (for companies, the university community and other social agents) and engaged in science dissemination activities by publishing papers in specialized journals. Of note is the participation in the workshop held in Paris by ISWA/UNEP to evaluate and calculate the greenhouse gas emissions associated with the handling of waste.

2. REGULATORY CHANGES AND MANAGEMENT MODELSEcoembes is constantly analyzing and studying the strategies needed to adapt its management models and systems to regulatory changes. It does so by creating working groups with government officials, companies and other parties involved.

3. ECODESIGN AND NEW PACKAGING MATERIALS

This area included the “Design to Recycle Project”, intended to familiarize member companies with the keys to designing packaging that is more easily recyclable.

The close cooperation between Ecoembes and the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) has translated over the years into various agreements to engage in research into areas such as bioplastics, biodegradability, recyclability and their effects on how packaging waste is handled. This research, which started in 2007, continued in 2013.

4. GREEN DOT:

All of the studies needed to support the calculation of the Green Dot fees were carried out. In 2013, this

involved updating the study on the densities of the various materials that are needed to calculatehow the internal costs are allocated for the fee in 2014.

5. TRAINING COURSES ON RECYCLABILITY AND HANDLING MSW

Ecoembes offers a specialized training service on pre-venting and handling packaging waste for its stakehold-ers. These courses are offered at the companies and online. Ecoembes also developed research and training projects through the Ecoembes Environment Chair at the UPM. The 2nd Master’s degree course (2012-2013), leading to a degree from the UPM, finished in 2013, and the third course began (2013-2014).

6. INTEGRATED WASTE MANAGEMENT

In 2013 the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP) and Ecoembes signed an addendum to an institutional partnership agreement between the two organizations in an effort to establish joint projects to improve how urban waste is handled. The projects carried out in 2013 as part of this agreement included the launch of the first online graduate course on urban waste management for government employees.

7. STATE OF THE ART ON WASTE MANAGEMENT

As part of the working group on waste made up of representatives from government, private and public operators and materials associations, a study was commissioned in concert with the Catalonia Waste Agency. The first study was called “Weigh your Trash”, which involved weighing and identifying the trash generated in 300 homes.

8. PHOENIX PROJECT

Subsidized by the European Commission as part of the LIFE Program, the PHOENIX Project developed a computer program to analyze the management life cycle of packaging waste. This tool, which is currently being modified to simplify its operation without sacrificing its accuracy, provides a reference for other environmental analysis studies by the waste industry.

The 2013 fiscal year set a milestone in personnel management at Ecoembes, and one of Management’s goals for 2014 is to make the company an excellent place to work. To this end, as part of the new Human Resources strategy, an employee workplace survey was conducted in concert with the Great Place to Work organization, and internal training and communication were encouraged. Also in 2013 Ecoembes moved its headquarters.

IDENTIFICATION WITH THE COMPANY AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

One of the key tools for consolidating the corporate culture is the Internal Communications Plan. Under the “Ecoembes Spirit” motto, this strategy aims to familiarize employees with the corporate values and culture, making them more flexible and horizontal.

Various meetings were held with employees in 2013, like the second edition of Ecoembest, which dis-cussed the company’s actions in the areas of ethical management, R&D, renewal of contracts with pro-vincial governments, its strategy toward member companies and HR communications and manage-ment. These meetings allow for an open and relaxed discussion about the future of the company and the employees’ expectations. A series of “Breakfasts with Management” were held to provide a setting that allows for a more direct and personal exchange

with upper management, thus fostering an atmo-sphere of flexibility and trust. Several open houses were also planned for 2014 at various departments to share experiences, talk about each department’s projects and encourage employee involvement and enhance their sense of belonging.

In June of 2013 Ecoembes moved its headquarters to a new building where improved technology and open spaces inspire innovation, motivation and hor-izontality. This building was adapted to the needs of the company and designed to promote an ambiance of cooperation, communication and teamwork.

Ecoembes guarantees diversity and equality between men and women. The Ecoembes workforce has a higher percentage of women than the industry aver-age. Women also hold high management positions. As a starting point, in 2013 the company conducted an equal pay study that highlights the equality in the salaries of both genders.

Ecoembes also values diversity as a factor for en-hancing its staff, for providing an ability to innovate through vision, ideas and know-how. The compa-ny seeks to ensure the diversity of its workforce in terms of age, experience, culture, gender and training through work-life balance and equal opportunity.

Ecoembes is aware of the importance of balancing an employee’s personal and professional life. That is why in 2013 the company endorsed a flexible week-ly work schedule that allows all employees to adapt their workday to their own personal needs or circum-stances.

Company benefitsAs part of its compensation policy, Ecoembes makes available to all its employees a benefits package. In addition, in 2013 the R+ Flexible Remuneration Plan was launched under the slogan “You decide, you win”, which offers the opportunity to be paid in kind with products such as training, daycare vouchers, trans-portation vouchers and computer materials.

COMMITMENT TO PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT4Equality, diversity and work-life balance

TrainingEcoembes is committed to the continuing training of its employees to develop their skills and potential, and to their professional advancement and growth. In 2013 the company designed a training plan that fea-tures four main areas: Welcome and Integration Plan, skills training, technical training and language train-ing. These provide employees with the personal and professional skills needed to do their jobs and ensure

compliance with any applicable legal requirements.

A total of 1,880 training hours were provided in 2013: 3% for directors, 17% for middle management, 68% to specialists and 11% to administrative personnel. As for temporary employees, they received 263 hours of training. The training breakdown by gender was 38% for men and 62% for women.

For Ecoembes, integrating social and environmental challenges into its activity is essential. That is why the company works to generate shared value for all its stakeholders. Constant and transparent communications with them is a key aspect for the SIG within its Corporate Social Responsibility strategy. The citizen is a key component in the recycling equation, as evidenced by the Ecoembes’s intense engagement in environmental awareness and education activities.

The recycling of packaging requires active participation from the public. That is why Ecoembes developed a variety of initiatives aimed at teaching people how important prop-er recycling is to the environment. Notable actions taken in 2013 include:

• Over 320 awareness initiatives undertaken in concert with local governments in an effort to increase the public’s in-volvement in and commitment to recycling.

• Circulation of the “Aire” ccorporate ampaign, which seeks to enhance Ecoembes’s efforts to aid the campaign environ-ment.

• The development of specific campaigns to promote the se-lective collection of paper and cardboard, which reached out to more than 21,000 people.

conducted every 2 or 3 years, depending on the group surveyed. In 2013 these surveys revealed a very pos-itive opinion by recyclers of materials sales (7.6 out of 10) and by recyclers of additional collections (8.5 out of 10). The service provided by Ecoembes was noted as a strong point, while the complexity of the paperwork was noted as needing improvement. Dialogue and cooper-ation with member companies were also reinforced in 2013 through a new and more personal approach.

Knowing the expectations of the SIG stakeholders is key to both proper management of the SIG and to identify-ing opportunities to create shared value with the com-pany. Ecoembes engages in dialogue and cooperation with its stakeholders using the channels and processes described in the “Materiality” section of this report, as well as through specific actions to ascertain the level of satisfaction with its management and performance. Essential in this regard are the satisfaction surveys

Dialogue

• Constant news feed to the media on the lat-est events in the recycling of packaging. These news items appeared in over 3,200 press, radio, television and internet outlets. Ecoembes also supported environmental journalism through its summer course at the UMP, by partnering to organize workshops like those hosted by Unidad Editorial, by offering grants to recent journalism graduates (APIA-Ecoembes-Europa Press Grant) and holding training workshops/tours on recycling for environmental journalists. All of these activities resulted in Ecoembes being honored with the VIA APIA Award for transparency in information, pre-sented by the Association of Environmental News Journalists.

• Awarding of the first edition of the Ecoembes R Awards, which recognize and distinguish initia-tives that promote sustainability and recycling. Five awards were presented, one in each of five catego-ries (journalism, research, best awareness cam-paign, best social initiative and best ecodesign mea-sure).

• First edition of the Upcycling photography contest on recycling, in partnership with EFTI and Ecoalf. Or-ganization of traveling exhibits.

• Promotion of social networks and online com-munications through the recycling blog “Planeta Recicla”.

In schools

Making the environmental and social benefits of recycling reach different components of spanish society is what motivates Ecoembes to engage in various actions and campaigns in partnership with agencies like SOS Children’s Villages and the Red Cross. Children and their environmental education is naturally one of the key objectives of these initiatives.

• Promotion of the blog amarilloverdeyazul.com, which aims to make educational resources available to teachers so they can instill the importance of recycling in kids. The blog was visited over 460,000 times in 2013..

Social project The music of Recycling

• In 2013 Ecoembes started working on a project with the Cateura (Paraguay) Recycled Instruments Orchestra by organizing a benefit concert in Madrid’s National Auditorium. The first steps were also taken to duplicate this initiative in Spain, with the launch of a project that is intended to give a second chance to children at risk of social exclusion, one that is based on environmental values and on musical training. In 2013 Ecoembes engaged in

several corporate volunteer-ism activities designed to lay the foundations for a future program in this area. Twenty-one compa-ny employees took part in the 3rd Annual Give&Gain Day Interna-tional Volunteers Week, through

outdoor activities with disabled children and those art risk of social exclusion. Likewise, in Christmas of 2013, 21 company volunteers worked with Children’s Villages to organize a crafts workshop to cre-ate nativity scenes with recycled packaging.

Corporate Volunteerism

In 2013 Ecoembes and the Public Agency for Prison Training and Employment signed an agree-ment to launch a job placement program at companies in the waste industry. Its purpose was to find jobs for inmates at the Al-calá de Henares Social Insertion Center by training 15 students in waste management. The pro-gram consisted of 150 hours of

classroom training and 80 unpaid hours of hands-on practice in re-lated companies. The success of this program led Ecoembes to plan similar activities in 2014 and 2015 at other prisons and social insertion centers.

Job Placement

Job CreationEcoembes gives back to society by contributing to the creation of jobs and the industrial fabric. Based on a study conducted in 2013 by professors at the Universidad de Málaga and the Universidad Carlos III in Madrid, Ecoembes’s activity has already created over

42,600 jobs, 9,400 of them direct. In addition to creating employ-ment, every euro invested by Ecoembes generates 2.8-euros’ worth of activity in the Spanish economy..

This publication presents the environmental, social and financial performance of Ecoembes (Ecoembalajes España, S.A.) for 2013. It continues with the trend begun in 2012 of using an approach that shows an integrated view of the company’s performance in these areas that, given the nature of their activity, are inseparable.

This report was prepared based on the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI. G4 Essential) recommendations for sustainable reporting. The correspondence between the contents recommended in these guidelines and their location in this report is given at the end of this publication, in the GRI Contents Index.

To determine the topics to be included in this report, Ecoembes relied on those aspects specified by the GRI, and which are the result of a broad consultation at the international level of corporate, government and social stakeholders. Ecoembes also adapted the report to its own circumstances, as dictated by its market and area of activity, the legal and socioeconomic context, and the expectations of the company’s stakeholders.

Every material aspect reported covers 100% of the Ecoembes activity involving the management of the SIG. The figures have the same scope and coverage as in previous years, and use the same reporting criteria.

G4 17 & 18& 20-23

Stakeholder engagement

In order to identify the company’s stakeholders, Ecoembes considers all the entities that are directly involved in the packaging and packaging waste man-agement cycle, regardless of whether or not they have a contractual obligation to the company. As a result, stakeholders are considered to be its suppli-ers and those organizations, associations and com-munications media that share in the SIG’s (Integrated Management System) environmental, social or finan-cial concerns.

In addition to the constant engagement between Ecoembes and the direct participants in the SIG through industry working groups, meetings, conventional means of communications and visits, the company communicates with its stakeholders via specific one-way and two-way channels through which the company learns how satisfied SIG participants are with its operation and with the services provided by Ecoembes; reports its environmental, social and financial performance; and stays up to date on the expectations and topics that are important to its stakeholders. The dialogue with stakeholders focuses both on aspects specific to how Ecoembes manages its processes and to its performance regarding the triple bottom line.
