Dear Friends: We recently heard from an inmate in the correctional system, requesting a copy of the West Virginia history that the Humanities Council published a few years ago for use in adult education classes. We sent the little book with our best wishes, reminding me of the wide variety of programs and constituencies our organization serves. A look at recent highlights confirms the broad range of Council work: *Our programs and grants served every part of West Virginia, and many places repeatedly. *We launched the online West Virginia Encyclopedia. In a few months, e-WV” has carried the West Virginia story to tens of thousands of people — in every state and in more than 75 countries worldwide. *We sent several lucky high school teachers to India, continuing a long tradition of Humanities Council teacher institutes. Past groups have studied in England, Japan and at many places in West Virginia. *We hosted one of the last public appearances of the late Ted Sorensen, advisor and confidant to President Kennedy. Sorensen recalled West Virginia’s historic 1960 presidential primary. *And we had a good year financially, with income surpassing projections and expenditures within budget. That’s the real trick, of course, to field literally hundreds of programs yearly and still keep our organization in sound financial health. At the West Virginia Humanities Council we manage that with the support of the National Endowment for the Humanities, the West Virginia Department of Education and the Arts, and many corporate, foundation and individual donors. You’ll find them all in the Annual Honor Roll beginning at right. The purpose of this Report Card is to recognize those good supporters and to provide the level of accountability West Virginians expect of us. We welcome your review of our work, and certainly we welcome your support. Dear Friends: We recently heard from an inmate in the correctional system,

requesting a copy of the West Virginia history that the Humanities Council published a few years ago for use in adult education classes. We sent the little book with our best wishes, reminding me of the wide variety of programs and constituencies our organization serves.

A look at recent highlights confirms the broad range of Council work: *Our programs and grants served every part of West Virginia, and

many places repeatedly.*We launched the online West Virginia Encyclopedia. In a few months,

“e-WV” has carried the West Virginia story to tens of thousands of people — in every state and in more than 75 countries worldwide.

The Humanities Council had a strong year in 2010. Revenues increased to $1,527,940, more than 107 percent of projections and $201,771 higher than 2009. We spent $1,382,550, ending the year with a surplus of $145,390.

Where the money came from...

Again in 2010, the National Endowment for the Humanities, a federal agency, provided the largest share of Humanities Council income, $717,050 or 47 percent of the total. This increased from $640,260 in 2009. The West Virginia Department of Education and the Arts provided $450,000, the same as the previous year and 29 percent of the total. The remaining $360,890, or 24 percent of the total, came largely from the private sector, including individual gifts and corporation and foundation support. Of this, Verizon provided $150,000 in support of e-WV: The West Virginia Encyclopedia.

...and where the money went.

Our finances

Looking back, we note that Humanities Council income has grown from year to year. Allowing for the exceptional year of 2006, when revenues spiked with publication of the West Virginia Encyclopedia, 2010 was our best year ever. Council assets have risen as well, exceeding $2 million for much of fiscal year 2010.

Looking forward, we aspire to another good year. The Humanities Council board of directors has approved a budget of $1,567,000 for fiscal year 2011, which includes a $110,000 grants reserve carried forward from 2010._______________Unless otherwise indicated, the figures and charts shown here are based on actual, unaudited financial information as reported internally to management and the board of directors. The West Virginia Humanities Council is audited annually by an independent auditor, with each year’s audit available for public inspection by April of the following year.

The West Virginia Division of Culture and History awarded a $29,138 grant in support of grounds restoration during the 175th anniversary year of the historic MacFarland-Hubbard House. Existing landscaping, including fine magnolias and other mature trees, will be supplemented by period plantings, and the driveway and walks will be repaired.
