Sample 2016 issue
Dear reader,
The U.S. labor market is in its strongest position since the financial crisis. In
January 2016 the unemployment rate reached 4.9% - its lowest level in eight
years(1). An increase in average hourly earnings in January 2016 by half a
percentage point indicates after 6 years employees are starting to see their
earnings increase(2).
The competitive landscape of the labor market is changing, in a survey by
manpower 1 in 3 employers say that they have difficulty in recruiting(3). Also, more
and more employees are willing to relocate to find the perfect job fit, all of which
means that it is becoming increasingly difficult for employers to attract top talent
and most importantly retain it.
In this context, a number of questions are particularly important for American
employers: How do I compare to other employers on the job market? How
can I build a better reputation, conduct better practices within my company,
and ultimately attract and retain the best candidates?
That is why Statista.com, in partnership with Forbes, decided to ask those who
know best: US employees. In a survey of over 30,000 US employees, working for
large and mid-size U.S. firms, divisions of international companies, or institutions
(including hospitals and government agencies) respondents were asked to rate 30
work related attributes grouped in terms of atmosphere, remuneration, diversity
etc. and most importantly were asked these particular questions:
“On a scale of 0-10, how likely would you be to recommend your employer to
someone? How about other employers in your industry?”
Thanks to the results of this survey, conducted anonymously via online access
panels and not via the companies, we have established America’s 500 best large
and best 250 mid-sized employers across 25 industry sectors.

Calculation of the scores: for each employer a combination of the
direct and indirect score
6
Over 1,900 employers have been attributed a score, based on the two main elements below:
˃ The participants have also been asked if there are employers
they would recommend to their acquaintances, or, on the
contrary, if there are employers they would not recommend
their acquaintances to work for.
˃ In order to measure the willingness to recommend one‘s own
employer, the following question has been asked: „On a scale of 0
to 10, how likely is it that you would recommend your
employer to a friend or family member?” (0: wouldn’t recommend
my employer under any circumstances, 10: would definitely
recommend my employer).
1. Direct score: willingness to recommend one’s own employer
Participant Participant‘s employer Participant
Employer 1
…
Employer 2
Employer 5
The results of these two elements have been combined to calculate a final score for over 1,900 employers in the U.S., with a greater weight given to the
direct score, i.e. willingness of the participants to recommend their own employer.(1)
2. Indirect score: willingness to recommend other employers

˃ Having clear internal guidelines, transparent and measurable
requirements helps to fairly assess performance
˃ Explaining important decisions clearly and openly
˃ Pragmatic problem-solving and constructive feedback helps to
build a positive climate within the company
˃ Valuing and making use of senior expertise by encouraging
exchange between new and experienced employees
˃ Maintaining a balance between promoting newcomers and
supporting experienced employees
˃ Fostering a culture of trust in favor of experienced employees
˃ Make the employees part of the company’s success by developing
strong internal and external corporate communication
˃ Organizing promotion events with the employees: get-togethers to
celebrate the release of a new product, etc.
A lot of the recommendations are related to the subjective personal experiences in the workplace. The challenge consists in in transforming the recommendations into
concrete, scalable actions. However, implementing them does not necessarily involve extra costs. It is necessary to consider the needs of each company or industry in order
to decide which action has to be taken.
