IV. Overview of Programmes Conducted by the IMH (July – December 2012)
Public Education (1) Certificate Course in Mental Health (MHC06 & MHC07) The 12-hour Certificate Course in Mental Health (MHC) was specifically designed to serve
the needs of the society since October 2009. It provided training on the common mental
illnesses and the skills in managing mental illnesses to professionals, health care
professionals and related personnel who may come into contact with people with mental
health problems or their carers in their daily practice by comprehensive lectures, case
discussions/ vignettes, and interactive workshops. In view of the overwhelming responses
from the previous classes, two courses were re-run in the second half year of 2012.
The sixth course (MHC06) was conducted on 18 and 25 August 2012 and the seventh course
(MHC07) was conducted on 1 and 15 December 2012, with 84 and 70 participants
respectively including health care and educational professionals of the Hospital Authority,
government departments and non-government organisations, etc.

(2) NTWC Best Quality Improvement Project, NTWC AQC 2012 The IMH has participated in the Best Quality Improvement Project Contest of the New
Territories West Cluster (NTWC) Annual Quality Conference (AQC) 2012 organised by the
Cluster Quality and Safety Division. An abstract on “Mental Health Promotion in Hong Kong:
a way to defeat stigmatisation and enhance the early intervention of mental illness in the
community” was submitted and selected for oral presentation at the NTWC Annual Quality
Conference 2012 on 7 December 2012. Dr. Bonnie SIU, Convener of the Public Education
Subcommittee presented the project during the Conference and has won the first runner-up.

(3) Basic Psychological Life Support (BPLS) Course The Public Education Subcommittee and St. John Ambulance have been co-organising the
Basic Psychological Life Support (BPLS) Course since January 2011. The BPLS Course
provided knowledge on common mental health problems and treatments, positive psychology,
recognising stress and anxiety and skills in dealing with the psychological reactions of
victims in a first aid situation. A total of 150 members of the general public were trained in
three BPLS Provider Courses in July, August and November 2012 respectively.
(4) Educational Materials The publications of the IMH provide a good source of information on mental illnesses and
self-help guide to patients and the general public. The information is handy and easily
accessible at the service units of CPH and online at the IMH website. To ensure the
information is accurate and up-to-date, it has been an ongoing exercise conducted by the
Public Education Subcommittee to review the educational materials and reprint those
pamphlets on high demands. The materials updated from June to December 2012 are listed in
the following section.
Educational pamphlets including “Sleepwalking” ( 夢 遊 ) and “Obsessive Compulsive
Disorder” (強迫症) were reviewed and reprinted. The updated materials are available for free
distribution in different service units and public access on the IMH website.

(5) Health Column on Sing Tao Daily The Public Education Subcommittee continues to collaborate with Sing Tao Daily in
publishing articles written by CPH colleagues as an effective medium to disseminate mental
health knowledge to the public. The articles are published under the health column “保健至
專” (Feature page E08 “健康港”) on alternate Mondays.
CPH colleagues have given great support to this project by actively submitting their articles.
Published articles are shared to all CPH staff via email. The collection of articles is also
uploaded to the IMH website for public access.

Professional Training (1) Three-Day Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) Training A three-day Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) Training was successfully held on 13 to
15 September 2012, with an attendance of 108 mental health professionals, including
psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, occupational therapists, clinical psychologists and social
workers. Professor Jesse H. Wright, Professor and Vice Chairman for Academic Affairs as
well as Director of the Depression Center in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral
Sciences, University of Louisville in USA, was invited to deliver this training programme.
The three-day workshop covered topics on “High-yield CBT for brief sessions in psychiatric
settings”, “CBT for severe mental disorders” and “CBT for challenging patients, inpatient
CBT, computer-assisted CBT”, with demonstrations of simulated brief sessions. Very positive
feedback was received from participants.

Psychiatric Nursing Education
(1) Two-year Enrolled Nurse (Psychiatric) Training Programme Under the two-year Enrolled Nurse (Psychiatric) Training Programme, there were five classes
(Classes 6 to 10) with a total of 145 trainees undergoing training in CPH during the reporting
period. The final examination of Class 6 was held on 13 July 2012 with all 27 trainees
passing.
Meanwhile, 30 trainees of Class 10 (commencement on 15 October 2012) for the Social
Welfare Sector were recruited and had been undergoing a 10-week clinical placement in long
stay care wards since 24 December 2012.

Research
(1) Research Skills Training Workshop The Research Subcommittee has been organising Research Skills Training Workshops which
comprise a series of interactive small-group workshops conducted by experienced researchers.
The series of workshops repeats once every six months, and is open to all CPH staff. The
workshops aim at promoting a culture of research and enhancing research skills among the
staff of CPH. The second series of four workshops in 2012 was held from October to
December, and trainee family physicians from TMH were invited. A total of 42 CPH and
TMH staff members participated in these four workshops.
(i) Critical Appraisal of Research Papers (10 October 2012)
This workshop was conducted by Dr. William CHUI which was about critical appraisal of
research papers.
(ii) Searching Medical Literature and Using Reference Management Software (21
November 2012)
This workshop was conducted by Dr. Mimi WONG, Associate Consultant of United Christian
Hospital. It focused on techniques in performing online search for medical literature, and
techniques in using Endnote, a citation management software.

(iii) Application of SPSS for Clinical Study (28 November 2012)
This workshop was conducted by Mr. Kenny WONG, Manager from the HA Head Office. He
demonstrated the basic concepts of biostatistics and the use of SPSS, a statistics software
commonly used in biomedical research. The workshop provided participants with hands-on
experiences on how to create data files and perform data analysis with SPSS.

(iv) Writing research proposals and scientific papers (19 December 2012)
This workshop conducted by Dr. Simon LUI was on research methodology, and the concept
of research paradigm and common pitfalls in research design.
(2) Research Seminar Research Seminars have been part of the regular in-house training programme for medical
staff. A research seminar on “Negative schizotypy shows behavioural and neural
abnormalities” was presented by Prof. Raymond C. K. CHAN from the Chinese Academy of
Sciences on 19 December 2012, with a total of 37 medical staff members attended.
(3) Research Symposium Given the success of IMH conference 2011, it was planned to organize small scale scientific
symposia annually, which would serve as a platform for CPH staff to share their research work
with other researchers. The first research symposium was held on 19 December 2012. All CPH
staff were welcome to join. Four researchers of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Laboratory
of Mental Health, and five researchers of the Hong Kong CPH Branch presented and
discussed about their studies. Fourteen medical staff members attended.

(4) Research Studies As of December 2012, CPH has more than 30 on-going research projects and the IMH is
actively involved in the following research projects:
“A four-year prospective family study in patients suffering from first episode
psychosis: A quest for intermediate phenotypes and aetiology of psychosis”- As of
December 2012, a total of 150 patients with first-episode psychosis have been
endophenotyped whereas 64 healthy controls and 200 patients have been recruited for
endophenotyping and genotyping respectively.
“Prospective memory impairment in patients with bipolar affective disorder” –
Completed. An original article, “Patients with bipolar disorders share similar but
attenuated prospective memory impairments with patients with schizophrenia” was
published in Psychological Medicine (IF=6.16). Poster presentation was conducted at the
3rd Biennial Schizophrenia International Research Conference 2012 and the abstract was
published in Schizophrenia Research.
“Motivated, effortful behaviour in response to anticipatory and consummatory
pleasure in patients with schizophrenia: a cross-sectional case-control study” –
Completed. In preparation for submission to a peer-review journal.
“Facial emotion perception in psychosis under different social contexts” – Completed.
Submitted to the Schizophrenia Research and under 2nd review.
“Anticipatory and consummatory affect and motivation in schizophrenia” –
Completed. In preparation for submission to peer-review journal.
“A case-control study of the components of executive function in patients with type I
bipolar disorder” – Completed. In preparation for submission to a peer-review journal.
“The role of prospective memory in the ability to manage medications in patients
with schizophrenia” – Submitted to the Schizophrenia Research.
“Schizotypy traits or features in nonpsychotic first-degree relatives of patients with
schizophrenia: cluster analysis using the Chapman Psychosis Proneness Scales” –
Around 150 respondents’ replies have been collected.
“Theory of mind and social cognition in nonpsychotic first degree relatives of
patients with schizophrenia” – Around 15 participants were recruited.

Patient and Carer Resource
(1) Community Partnership and Teens’ Life Coach Events A community partnership and teens life coach programme was jointly organised with the
Jardine Matheson Group. The programme included the following activities during the
reporting period:
A music performance by 15 patients of the Mindset Club’s “二胡組” and “金曲班” was
conducted on 14 July 2012 by invitation to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the Mindset
Club.
Promotional activities via mass media for the Rat Race were conducted with the
participation of staff and patients from the Mindset Club, which included a filming of 17
volunteers on 28 August 2012 and a media interview with the Service Manager by TVB.
The filming was broadcasted on TVB Pearl and Jade “Dolce Vita” from 13 to 19
September 2012.

Meanwhile, the Central Rat Race was conducted on 4 October 2012 with 17 volunteers
participated as cheer squad for the competitors. Two volunteers represented CPH to take part
in the“NGO Rat Cup”and won the champion of the game.
A gathering at the Mindset Club was conducted on 29 September 2012 to celebrate the
Mid-Autumn Festival, with 19 patients participating.
A barbeque party co-orgainsed with San Wui Commercial Society Secondary School was
conducted on 22 December 2012 under the Youth Mental Health Promotion Programme
“Health in Mind (Teen 使行動)” - A total of 18 participants, including patients and their
relatives, joined the activity. It provided a platform for secondary school students to
interact with psychiatric patients and to establish a positive attitude towards mental
illness.

(2) Psychological Support to Patients A music appreciation for patients and carers was conducted jointly with the Chaplaincy
on 14 July 2012, with 131 attendances.
An educational talk“另一角度觀病”for the Happy Sharing Group was conducted on
27 July 2012, and attended by 23 patients.

Hospital Archives & Gallery Exhibition
(1) The Annual History Lecture 2012 The Annual History Lecture 2012 on “The History of Mental Health in Hong Kong” was
successfully held on 6 July 2012. Dr. H. K. CHEUNG was invited as the guest speaker who
covered topics on the Asylums Ordinance 1906, the Mental Health Ordinance and the
changes over time. Over 120 participants including psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, clinical
psychologists, allied health professionals as well as academic staff from universities attended
the lecture.
Right after the Annual History Lecture, Dr. H. K. CHEUNG officiated the Opening
Ceremony of the new Museum Exhibit – The Computerised CPH Quiz, with a prize
presentation to the Champion of the Quiz for 2011-2012.

(2) Art Exhibition at HK Baptist University An exhibition of patients’ art was organised by the Art-in-CPH at Hong Kong Baptist
University on 19 November 2012. It was an opportunity to introduce the Art-in-CPH to
students and staff on campus and reduce stigma.
(3) Seminar on Art and Stress Management at Hong Kong Polytechnic
University Dr. Victoria TANG, Convener of the Art-in-CPH, was invited to give a talk on “The Art of
Stress Management” at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University on 24 October 2012 as a part
of the University’s Health Week seminars on work-life balance. Around 30 staff members
attended the talk. The audience found the talk stimulating and gave favourable responses.

V. Statistics of Educational Activities (Organised by the IMH and Invitations
Received)
The summary of all educational activities conducted by the IMH for the period from July to
December 2012 was presented as per Appendix I. The activities were categorised into two types.
The first type referred to the activities that were initiated and organised by the IMH and the
other type was the invitations received from other organisations for conducting talks or training
courses.
Altogether 109 activities were conducted, among which 97 activities were organised by the
IMH. A total projected net income of $336,255 was earned from the activities with 2,162
overall attendances. The breakdown of the activities by topics, target groups and geographical
locations of the participants is presented as per Appendix I.
Activities Organised by the IMH
A substantial fraction of the activities organised by the IMH during the reporting period focused
on topics related to general adult psychiatry, which attributed to 91% of the activities held. The
activities organised by the IMH mainly targeted at professional carers and patients. The
projected net income of $256,874 was generated from the activities organised by the IMH. The
evaluation report on the courses and educational talks is attached as per Appendix II.
Invitations from Other Organisations Among the 12 invitations that we received from external organisations, including government
department, non-government organisation (NGO) and educational institution, etc., most of them
requested for delivering training courses targeted mainly for the public. The projected net
income was $79,381.
Loan Record of Mental Health Educational Products Four applications from NGOs and educational institutions for borrowing our educational
exhibition boards, obtaining pamphlets or quoting / copying our publications, and linking up the
IMH website were received; they were all approved. The list of applications and the feedback
from the organisations are appended as per Appendix III.
