PROGRAMME – 1
Celebration of 4th
International Yoga Day, 21.06.2018
The Yoga and Meditation Centre of Kongunadu Arts and Science College
Coimbatore celebrated 4th International Day of Yoga on 21.06.2018 as per the
instructions laid by the University Grants Commission (UGC), New Delhi
[circular No.F.14-13/2015(CPP-II) dated 13th March 2018]. The event began at
06.30 am in the college premises. Our college students along with National
Service Scheme (NSS) Volunteers, National Cadet Crops (NCC) cadets, Youth
Red Cross (YRC) volunteers, Teaching and Non-teaching staff members
numbering 385 actively participated. Dr.V.Balasubramaniam, Principal of the
college welcomed the gathering and introduced the guest instructors of the
programme. Mr. Sunil and team, Yoga Instructors from Isha Yoga Centre,
Coimbatore gave a talk on the importance of Yoga practice in day to day life
and demonstrated the Yoga asanas. They explained the practice of yoga and
briefed the precautionary measures to be taken care of while performing yoga
asanas. All the participants performed Yoga Namaskar and Nadi suddhi. The
participants were delighted to perform the yoga asanas that transforms body and
mind. Mr. Hari Prakash of II B.Sc Zoology and Mr.Hariharan of I B.Sc
Computer Science of the host college, Kongunadu Arts and Science College
demonstrated some yoga asanas and elaborated the value of each asana for a
healthy life. Dr. K. Muthukumar, Assistant Professor of Tamil proposed Vote of
thanks.

Workshop on „The Role of NSS Volunteers in Technology
Transfer to the Rural Area‟
Indian Science Congress Association Coimbatore Chapter and The
National Service Scheme (NSS) unit of Kongunadu Arts and Science College
organized an one day workshop on “The Role of NSS Volunteers in Technology
Transfer to the Rural Area” in Kongunadu Arts and Science College,
Coimbatore on 06.07.2018.
Dr. R. Velmurugan, NSS Programme Officer, Unit-I of Kongunadu Arts
and Science College welcomed the gathering. Principal Dr. V.
Balasubramaniam presided over the workshop. The Chief Executive Officer of
Kongunadu Arts and Science College, Dr. V. Chinnusamy offered felicitation.
The special guest Mrs. R. Rani, Training coordinator, NSS-Empanelled
Training Institution (ETI), Avinashilingam Deemed University, Coimbatore
inspired and motivated the students with her speech on “The Role of NSS
Volunteers in Technology Transfer to the Rural Area”. A total number of 502
volunteers were actively participated in the workshop. Dr. K. Palanivel, NSS
Programme Officer, Unit-IV of Kongunadu Arts and Science College proposed
vote of thanks.

National Level Training Programme on „HPLC Technique‟
PG and Research Department of Botany, Kongunadu Arts and Science
College organized one day National Level Training Programme on HPLC
technique on 20.09.2018, sponsored by Indian Science Congress Association,
Coimbatore chapter. Resource person Mr. Vinothkumar, Amkette Analytics
Ltd, Mumbai delivered the lecture on instrumentation, working principle,
applications and trouble shooting of HPLC in morning session. During
afternoon session participants were trained with HPLC instrument and sample
injection and result analysis. Critical steps like solvent selection, sample
preparation, column washing, data interpretation and instrument maintenance,
etc were taught to the participants by the resource person. A total number of 90
participants including PG students, Ph.D., research scholars and faculty
members attended and benefitted.

A special lecture on “Science behind the traditional knowledge on
healthcare of women” was arranged on 25.09.2018 by the Department of
Botany, Kongunadu Arts and Science College, sponsored by Indian Science

An International Symposium on “Trends in Solar Cell Research” was
organized by the Department of Physics & Chemistry (PG) and sponsored
by Indian Science Congress Association (ISCA), Coimbatore Chapter on

Workshop on „Plant microtechniques‟
The Department of Botany, Kongunadu Arts and Science College,
Coimbatore organized a One day workshop on „Plant Microtechniques‟ on
04.10.2018, sponsored by Indian Science Congress Association (ISCA),
Coimbatore Chapter. Dr. P. Mehalingam, Assistant Professor of Botany, V.H.N.
Senthikumara Nadar College, Virudhnagar delivered the special lecture on
“Microtechniques‟. In his lecture he explained the technical aspect on the
preparation of permanent microscope slides from living materials and explained
the various aspects of microtomy such as fixing, dehydration, infiltration,
embedding, staining and mounting and their importance in the field of
pharmacogonosy. In the afternoon session, he gave the hands-on training on the
preparation of permanent slide. Participants were actively involved and
interacted with the resource person. Sixty seven participants from Kongunadu
Arts and Science College and other colleges namely Nehru Arts and Science
College, Dr.N.G.P. Arts and Science College, PSGR College for Women,
Coimbatore and Vellalar College for Women, Erode have attended the
workshop. The deliberations of the workshop are most useful for them.

Workshop on „DNA taxonomy and phylogeny‟
PG and Research Department of Biotechnology, Kongunadu Arts and
Science College, Coimbatore organized One day workshop on “DNA taxonomy
and phylogeny” sponsored by Indian Science Congress Association, Coimbatore
chapter at the college premises on 05.10.2018. The aim of this workshop is to
make the young and aspiring participants to acquire knowledge on DNA
taxonomy and phylogeny. The lecture on “Basic concepts and terms used in
phylogeny” was given by Dr. Amit Kumar, Scientist C, Centre for climate
change studies, Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai.
Hands on training regarding the identification of unknown bacteria and its
evolutionary relationship using bioinformatics tools was handled by Dr. Amit
Kumar. About 70 participants including students, research scholars and faculty
members from Kongunadu Arts and Science College, Coimbatore and various
other institutions have got benefit by this workshop. Certificates were
distributed to all the participants

Workshop on „Biostatistical analysis through SPSS software
package‟
PG and Research Department of Biotechnology, Kongunadu Arts and
Science College, Coimbatore organized one day workshop on „Biostatistical
analysis through SPSS software package‟ sponsored by ISCA, Coimbatore
chapter at the college premises on 08.10.2018. The aim of this workshop is to
make the young and aspiring participants to acquire knowledge on Biostatistical
analysis for processing biological data. Lecture session was given by Dr. P.
Mariappan, Assistant Professor and Head, PG and Research Department of
Zoology, Rajah Serfoji Government College (Autonomous), Thanjavur. He
highlighted the Data analysis, Random Sampling, Skewed Distribution, p-value,
t-Test and one way ANOVA which are determined efficiently and accurately.
He also enlightened the session on the usage of the SPSS software on the data
editor, t-test, one-way and two-way ANOVA. The session was followed by
hands on training workshop on Biostatistical analysis through SPSS software
package. About 66 participants including students, research scholars and faculty
members have got benefit by the workshop.

Science College, Coimbatore organized International Workshop on „Tiny Seeds
with Global Wonders‟ at the college premises on 11.10.2018 sponsored by
Indian Science Congress Association, Coimbatore Chapter. Dr. Albert
Premkumar, Senior Research Scientist, Department of Ecology, Environment
and Plant Sciences, Stockholm University, Sweden gave a lecture and technical
session on „Tiny Seeds with Global Wonders‟ and „Exploring Arabidopsis
Genome Mines‟. About 110 participants from various departments were
participated in the workshop and got benefit.

Creating scientific aptitude among the school students
Department of Zoology with Indian Science Congress Association,
Coimbatore Chapter organized a scientific programme in Corporation Middle
School, Thudiyalur, Coimbatore entitled “Creating Scientific Aptitude Among
The School Students” on 12th October 2018 from 10:00 a.m to 4:00 p.m.
MORNING SESSION
Dr.M.Lekeshmanaswamy, Head, Department of Zoology, Kongunadu
Arts and Science College delivered Presidential address. His speeches enlighten
the students knowledge about the current science.
Dr. S. Raja, Assistant Professor, Department of Zoology,
Kongunadu Arts and Science College, presented special address. On the course
of his speech, he explained the students about the historical findings of
forefathers who discovered without the help of advanced scientific instruments
which are available now.
The programme begin with a thematic lecture on SNAKES by Vikash
Raj. R, III B. Sc., Zoology, Kongunadu Arts and Science College. In his lecture,
he explained the difference between poisonous and non-poisonous snakes. He
also clarified the myths on snakes. He explained the measures to be taken
during a snakebite.

Arshath Iqram S, III B. Sc., Zoology, Kongunadu Arts and Science
College presented a lecture on Entrepreneurship. This was an eye-opening
lecture for students. He explained the need for an entrepreneur and created
awareness on entrepreneurship. He also explained how one could become an
entrepreneur. He explained need of skills to become an entrepreneur.

The spotter of human embryo was shown, their parts and developmental
stages of foetus were discussed.
CELL DIVISION
Stages of mitotic cell division were shown and explained.
STAR FISH / SEA STAR
The biological significance and specific characteristic features of starfish
were discussed.
MOLLUSCAN SHELLS
The biological significance and importance of the shell were explained.
CORALS
The importance of maintaining the corals, their role in maintaining the
environment, their relationship with the clown fish was also explained.

A documentary on Climatic Change screened to the students by
Dr. R. Venkitachalam, Assistant Professor of Zoology, Kongunadu Arts and
Science College. The documentary educated the students about the course,
reason, cause, solutions, and problems for climate change.
AFTERNOON SESSION:
Competition was conducted to encourage and showcase student‟s talent.
The students were happily participated and enjoyed. Drawing and story writing
competitions were conducted from 2:00 p.m to 3:00 p.m.
25 Students were participated and the stories written by students were
mind-blowing. Similarly lots of beautiful drawings were also drawn by the
students.
Quiz competition was organized from 3:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
The awareness programme on Swachh Bharat mission displayed through
wall painting in Corporation Middle School, Thudiyalur by
Basu Nair (I B. Sc., Zoology) which educates the school students.

premises on 13.10.2018. The lecture cum demo on “Application of fluorescent
microscopy in bacterial cells, insect and mammal cell lines using fluorescent dyes”
was given by Mr. Anandharasan, Assistant Manager, Olympus, Chennai. The
participants had observed the use of fluorescent microscopy in various cells. About 20
participants including Students, Research Scholars and Faculty Members from the
host institution have participated and got benefit by this workshop.

UG, PG and Research Department of Biotechnology, Kongunadu Arts and
Science College organized Indian Science Congress Association (ISCA), Coimbatore
Chapter sponsored One day workshop on „Plant Genomic Transformation‟ in the
college premises on 08.12.2018. Ms. P. Karthika and Mr. Amal T Cheeran, the
Research Scholars, Department of Botany, Bharathiar University, Coimbatore were
the resource persons. The former delivered lecture on “Cell Suspension” and later
gave lecture on “Agrobacterium mediated Gene Transfer”. The participants were
demonstrated with the Agrobacterium mediated gene transfer in various stages by
resource persons. All participants had hands-on training on the above technologies.
Thirty participants which include students, research scholars and faculty members
from host institution got benefit by this workshop.

materials. He lectured how the Biopolymer in Nano composites can hold high

showed the work which proves how identical location transmission electron
microscopic study can be efficient on PtCu Electrocatalysts. In his talk, results from
their investigation on the electrochemical dealloying and degradation of PtCu/C alloy
electrocatalyst for oxygen electroreduction using identical location electro microscopy
and rotating disc voltammetry was discussed.

this session regarding the Solution Combustion Synthesis of Nanocrystalline
oxides. He explained the synthesis of nanocrystalline oxides by solution
combustion method. This method was both time saving and energy efficient.
This influence of Fuel to Oxidizer Ratio on Structural, Electrochemical and
Magnetic Properties lead to the development of highly sensitive sensor for
important neurotransmitter, dopamine.

NATIONAL SCIENCE DAY CELEBRATIONS
(TESLA FEST-2019)
Science day is celebrated all over India with great enthusiasm on 28th
of Feb
every year in order to commemorate the invention of Raman Effect in India by the
Indian Physicist, Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman for which he was awarded and
honored with the Nobel Prize in Physics in the year 1930. Physics department of
Kongunadu Arts and Science College celebrated National Science Day celebrations
for 3 days which was sponsored by Indian Science Congress Association (ISCA),
Coimbatore Chapter.
DAY 1 - SCIENCE EXHIBITION
National science day celebration started with science exhibition on 26.02.2019
and it was inaugurated by Dr.C.A.Vasuki, Convener, Coimbatore Chapter and
Secretary & Director, Kongunadu Arts and Science College. Exhibits of the students
from various departments gained remarkable attention from visitors and other
students.
DAY 2 - INTER-COLLEGIATE & INTER-DEPARTMENTAL
COMPETITIONS
Various competitions were conducted to the college students on 27.02.2019 to
encourage their interest. Nearly 150 participants from various colleges and various
departments of Kongunadu Arts and Science College have actively participated in the
competitions like Paper presentation, Science fiction Writing, Just a Minute, Quiz and
potpourri. They bagged different prizes by expressing their extraordinary talents.
Prizes and certificates were distributed to the winners by Associate Professor and
Head of the Physics Department of Physics, Dr.M.Dhanam.

DAY 3- NATIONAL SEMINAR ON
“SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY FOR NATION DEVELOPMENT”
National Seminar was conducted on 28.02.2019 in the Auditorium.
Development at any phase is always linked with technology and technology happens
when there is advancement in science. Hence science, technology and development
are all proportional to each other. Modernization in every aspect of life is the greatest
example of implementation of science and technology in every nation. It goes without
saying that, a nation‟s development and prosperity is judged to a large extent by the
status of science and technology of that nation.
Programme started by gracing the occasion with spiritual vibes.
Ms.G.S.Madhuvathani, Secretary of Physics Association welcomed the gathering.
Dr.M.Dhanam, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Physics gave a
preamble to the seminar and introduced the speakers to the gathering. Further the
programme lead to felicitation by Dr.Paulsamy, Dean, Academics and R&D.
Dr.V.Chinnusamy CEO of Kongunadu Arts and Science College, Coimbatore gave
the presidential address. Dr.Prabhakaran Selvaraj, University of Exeter, alumni of
Kongunadu Arts and Science College was a special guest and he shared his thoughts
regarding pursuing research in UK.
The first session was handled by Captain M.Ramasubramaniam, Officer in
charge, Indian Naval Distributing Authority, Kochi on the topic “Challenging
Research Areas for Nation Development”. He emphasized on looking life as journey
of learning. He quoted “Don‟t celebrate a celebrity, become a celebrity by hard work”.
The session explains the thrust areas of research where advancement is needed for
betterment in naval field.
Dr. Devaraj, Associate Professor of Physics, Government Arts College,
Coimbatore handled the second session on the topic “Opportunities for Science
Graduates”. He focused on the career options for science graduates in various fields
and the list of competitive examinations for undergraduate and post graduate students
for their betterment.

The third session was handled by Dr.S.K.Krishna, Assistant Professor of
Chemistry, Chikaiah Naicker College, Erode on the topic “Role of Science in Food
and Health”. He energized the audience with his unique way of presentation and
informative talking. He elaborated the pollutions that are caused by the harmful,
deadly chemicals in the food that we eat.
The last session was handled by Dr.Amutha, Assistant Professor of Physics,
PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore on the Topic “Importance of Science and
Technology in Nation Development”. She discussed about the need of further
developments in the science and technology for the nation‟s development. Finally the
fest ended with the Vote of Thanks by Mr.V.M.Hariharan, Joint Secretary of Physics
Association.
More than 500 students from various colleges in and around Coimbatore
participated in Tesla Fest-2019 and are highly motivated to do higher studies and
research. It also provided a platform to the student‟s creativity and talents.

diseases in various methods namely using drugs derived from plants, animals and
birds, metals and nonmetals and physical methods including varma and external
application of oils. Researchers are now concentrating on the effect of siddha
formulations in curing various ailments. This programme nourishes and nurture the
students, researchers and academicians to expose the Nano Physiology and Nano
Biochemistry angle of the ancient system of medicine. About 200 participants
including Students, Research Scholars and Faculty Members from the host institution

Biochemistry and Programme Co-ordinator welcomed the gathering. Dr.V.Balasubramaniam,
Principal of the College delivered the Presidential Address. Dr.S.Paulsamy, Dean, Academics

One day workshop on “Cell Culture Techniques” was conducted on 11.03.2019
by the Department of Botany, Kongunadu Arts and Science College sponsored by the
Indian Science Congress Association (ISCA), Coimbatore Chapter.
Dr. K. Sowndhararajan, Organizing Secretary and Assistant Professor of Botany,
Kongunadu Arts and Science College welcomed the gathering. Dr. N. Nagarajan,
Associate Professor of Botany, Kongunadu Arts and Science College honored the
resource person with a gift. Dr. V. Balasubramaniam, Principal and HOD, Kongunadu
Arts and Science College presided over the function. His speech mainly focused on
the importance of animal cell culture techniques in relation to the plant science
research field. Dr. S. Paulsami, Dean R & D, Kongunadu Arts and Science College
felicitated the workshop.He clearly explained the history of some important cancer
cell lines and the cytotoxicity effect of plant extracts.
The resource person, Dr. P. Arulselvan, Managing Director, SCIGEN Research
and Innovation Pvt. Ltd., Thanjavur delivered lecture on the topic “Animal Cell
Culture Techniques and Their Applications”. This lecture was very useful for budding
researchers. He provided many information regarding the basics of cell culture
techniques and emphasized applied aspects of cell culture research. In addition, he
pointed out different types of cell lines and pros and cons of cell culture research. In
the workshop session, observation of animal cells, preparation of cell culture media
and other reagents for cell culture, subculture of cells and counting the cells were
trained to participants.
Dr. K. Karthika, Assistant Professor of Botany, Kongunadu Arts and Science
College proposed vote of thanks. A total number of 55 participants which include
research scholars and staff members of Department of Botany attended the
programme. From this workshop, participants gained more practical knowledge in
connection with basic cell culture techniques.

Science College organized a One day National Seminar on “Applications of
Mathematics in Physical Sciences” sponsored by Indian Science Congress
Association, Coimbatore Chapter on 14.03.2019 (Thursday) in the College premises.
Dr. V. Kokilavani, Head, PG and Research Department of Mathematics and Convenor
of the Seminar welcomed the gathering. Dr. S. Paulsamy, Dean, Academics and R&D
of the College delivered the Presidential Address. Dr. Moorthi Pichumani, DST
INSPIRE Faculty, Associate Professor of Nanoscience & Technology, Sri
Ramakrishna Engineering College, Coimbatore delivered the Inaugural Address. Dr.
D. Vijayalakshmi, Assistant Professor of Mathematics and the Organizing Secretary
of the seminar proposed the vote of thanks for the Inaugural function.
In the Technical Session I, Dr. Moorthi Pichumani delivered a special lecture
on the topic „Small is Different: The Nano - Maths‟ in which in an inter disciplinary
approach, he explained the usage of Mathematics in the Nanotechnology oriented
researches. Dr. Gnanavel Soundararajan, Assistant Professor of Mathematics, School
of Physical Science, Central University of Kerala, delivered the lecture on the topic
„Geometry of Surface – an Overview‟ in the Technical Session II. After the technical
sessions, the valedictory function of the seminar was held, in which Dr. M.
Vigneshwaran, Assistant Professor of Mathematics and the Organizing Secretary of
the seminar welcomed the gathering. Dr. Gnanavel Soundararajan delivered the
valedictory address. Dr. M. Venkatachalam, Assistant Professor of Mathematics
proposed the vote of thanks at the end. This one day National Seminar helped more
than 200 participants from various Institutions to equip themselves with some
innovative interdisciplinary ideas. The programme concluded with the National
Anthem.

Hands on Training on „Soap Making‟
Hands on Training on „Soap Making‟ was conducted on 20th
March 2019. This
program was sponsored by “The Indian Science Congress Association” and organized
by Department of Chemistry, Kongunadu Arts and Science College, Coimbatore. Dr.
V. Sangeetha, Head of the Department of Chemistry, Kongunadu Arts and Science
College welcomed the gathering. The knowledge and insights you can get in just a
day from this training and its importance was well explained by Dr. K. Saminathan,
Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry, Kongunadu Arts and Science College.
He also explained the history of soap making. Felicitation was given by Dr. S.
Paulsamy, Dean Research and Development, Kongunadu Arts and Science College.
He conveyed us the importance of various herbal plants which are rich in oil content.
He also appreciated the organizers for making the students in future to become
entrepreneurs. Followed by felicitation, Dr.A.Manimaran, Assistant Professor of
Chemistry introduced the resource person Dr.K.Poongodi, Assistant Professor of
Chemistry, NGM College, Pollachi. Dr. K. Poongodi explained the basics and
processes involved in soap making and saponification value of various vegetable oils.
Followed by the lecture hands on training was given to the participants. In the training
session, Neem, Aloe vera, Turmeric and Rose powder soaps were made. Participation
certificates were distributed at the end of the programme to all participants numbering
