Title: Metal Bench Work
Objective:
The main objective is for student to exposure on the use of measuring, marking and hand tools in
workshop.
Learning Outcomes:
To ensure student be familiar with hand tools in workshop and able to use them.
Raw Materials and Equipment/Tools:
Mild Steel Flat Bar, Steel Ruler, Solid Steel Square, Scriber, Disc Cutting Machine/Electric
Power Saw, Bench Vise/G Clamp, Hand Hacksaw, File Hammer , Center Punch, Drilling
Machine, Tap and Wrench.
Background of Bench Work:
Bench work is a term used to describe any type of labor or work that is managed using a
workbench rather than with the use of heavy machinery in a plant setting or in a larger area. The
term is also sometimes used to refer to the structures that support finished projects such as model
train sets that are set up on a more or less permanent basis. In terms of the creation of goods,
there are several different examples of bench work. Carpentry bench work involves the crafting
of different types of furniture or frames for upholstered furniture pieces. In my previous
laboratory class, bench work using a metal. Here, the idea behind the bench work furniture
creation is to carefully craft each component by hand, with some pieces built and assembled
entirely on the workbench. At other times, the individual pieces are hand crafted as part of the
bench work and assembled at another site.
Procedure:
1. A mild steel flat bar was out with large size and divide in each individual into a plate with
140mm long by using disc cutting machine/electric power saw.
2. After cutting process, we use steel rulerand Solid Steel Square to mark 100mm. The plate
was clamp by using bench vise/G Clamp to remove from plate about 3.98mm using
hacksaw and file the rest to produce a plate 100mm long. File 45 degree each sharp
edges.
3. By using scriber, mark the center of the plate. Punch a hole at the mark using a hammer.
4. Using driller machine, drill hole at the center of the plate that was been mark using drill
bit size 8.5mm.
5. Cut internal threads in the hole using tap size M10x1.5.
Conclusion:
1. The laboratory class is very simple and easy to understand how we manage our safety
and use tools safely and it is very challenging because I learn a new knowledge
practically.
2. Needs more tools, so students can do works done in 1 session laboratory class. It will not
take time to finish it.
