Important Note:
Formal letters have been sent from the PR of Morocco with WMO to PRs of Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and Egypt with WMO.
Emails have been sent from RAIDEG member (Mrs EL Ouaraini) to many colleagues from Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt.
Until today (31/10/2017), we have received replies by email from Egypt and Tunisia.

1. Status of access to products and training
• Case of Tunisia: 1 satellite reception system: Ku reception.
1. Status of access to products and training
In general, North African countries have Ku reception, they receive
most of products, but need others (request license ?)
• Access to training
Many people from Egypt, Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia have benefited from training courses on how they use and interpret some
disseminated data and products (online and in-class), organized by WMO and/or EUMETSAT. Nevertheless, the need is still there.
2. Status of data and products utilization
New requirements (from Egypt)
• Precipitation products. • Better spatial and temporal resolution for the following models than currently
received:
o Meteo france (global 0.5, 1.0, 1.5)
o Wafc London (1.0, and 0.234)
o ECMWF (2.5 and 5.5)
• Satellite data of scatterometer and altimeter over the Red Sea, south and south eastern Mediterranean and Suez Gulf (image and digital data)
• Satellite data with high resolution and rapid run. • Hourly, daily and monthly:
Dust, fire smoke, solar radiation data, gases (green house gases, ex ( co2, ch4 and co)) , UV index, ozone index, cloud cover, microphysics channel, vegetation index or agro-meteorology application, hydrology application data, severe event detector.
New requirements (from Tunisia)
• Satellite data for NWP Data Assimilation (AMV, ASCAT, IASI, SSMI/S, AIRS,
Geowind, Cris, …)
• CM SAF products.
• NWC SAF products.
2. Status of data and products utilization
New requirements (from Morocco)
• NWP Data for NWP Data Assimilation (AMV, ASCAT, IASI, SSMI/S, AIRS, Geowind, Cris, …)
• Nowcasting and short term forecasting – Convection indices (CII, MPE, LI …),
– Global Instability Index - MSG - 0 degree
• Vegetation – Daily Evapotranspiration - MSG
– Leaf Area Index - MSG
– Normalised Difference Vegetation Index - MSG - 0 degree
– Vegetation index - Metop
– Dry Matter Productivity (DMP) - PROBA-V - Africa
2. Status of data and products utilization
New requirements (from Morocco) • Soil moisture
– ASCAT Soil Moisture at 12.5 km Swath Grid - Metop
– ASCAT Winds and Soil Moisture at 12.5 km Swath Grid - Metop
– Soil Water Index - Metop - Africa
• Snow – Snow Cover - MSG
– Daily Snow Cover - Metop
– Snow detection (snow mask) by VIS/IR radiometry – MSG
– Snow status (dry/wet) by MW radiometry
• Energy – 10-Daily Surface Albedo - MSG
– Surface Albedo - MSG
– Land Surface Temperature - MSG
2. Status of data and products utilization
New requirements (from Morocco)
• Precipitation – Dekadal & Montly Rainfall Estimates and anomalies for Africa – MSG (netCDF4, PNG)
– Precipitation Estimation Product - 6 & 24 Hours - Feng-Yun – 2G
– Rainfall Estimate for Africa - MSG
– Total Precipitable Water Mapped - Multimission
– Long Term statistics of CHIRPS-RFE - TRMM
– Hamburg Ocean Atmosphere Parameters and Fluxes from Satellite Data - HOAPS 3.2 - Monthly Means / 6-Hourly Composites
– Multi-Sensor Precipitation Estimate (GRIB) - MSG - 0 degree
• Other products – Dust surface concentration - NMMB/BSC-Dust Model
– Dust optical depth at 550 nm - NMMB/BSC-Dust Model
– IASI Sulfur dioxide – Metop
– Fire Detection and Monitoring – MSG
• H-SAF products (precipitation and Soil Moisture)
2. Status of data and products utilization
3. Training
New requirements
All courses related to how to use and interpret required data and products are welcome. Nevertheless, the following countries have
specific training needs.
Egypt • Marine forecasts, • Satellite images Analysis, • Ho to use data in assimilated techniques or calibration, • How to use radiation data to detect certain phenomena, • They ask for the possibility of long-term training for Egyptian
meteorologists (master or PhD).
3. Training
New requirements
Morocco • Use of Satellite Products in Agrometeorology , for Drought Monitoring
and Agro-meteorological Applications . • Use of Satellite Data for Climate Services to agriculture and forestry
applications e.g. fire hazards, food production and hydrology . • Convection indices interpretation (CII, MPE, LI …). • How tu use satellite information in climate prediction (from seasonal
to decadal scale).
4. Recommendations to WMO, EUMETSAT, AMCOMET
• A REAL optimizing products dissemination process necessarily involves a good understanding (not really the case currently) by the African users of:
1. What is currently available,
2. What are their real needs,
3. What are the limitations they confront (infrastructure problem, human capacity, ..).
African users community should provide an additional effort in this understanding in order to help in optimizing products dissemination through EUMETCast. WMO and EUMETSAT could provide assistance for better awareness and understanding.
• Keep good temporal and spatial resolutions of MTG data to disseminate to Africa, however, focus on the restriction of disseminated data products to the essential.
