8th HOPE Meeting Launched in 2008, HOPE Meetings are held for excellent graduate students and young researchers specially selected from countries/areas around the Asia-Pacific and African regions. HOPE Meetings provide a unique opportunity for the participants to embark upon their careers by gaining wide scientific perspectives transcending their respective fields of specialization and diverse cultural understanding, while building international networks with each other. The 8th HOPE Meeting, chaired by Prof. Makoto Kobayashi, was held in Tsukuba from 7 to 11 March, 2016 with a focus on physics, chemistry, physiology/medicine and related fields. It was attended by 107 doctoral students and young researchers from 18 Asia-Pacific and African countries and regions, including the first time participants from Myanmar.

Group Discussions 45-minute group discussions were held in the afternoon of March 7, 8, and 10. Each discussion group consisted of about 30 participants and a moderator facilitated a group discussion. In these group discussions, participants conversed with the eminent lecturers about their research activities, future career paths and other topics of interest to them.

Flash Talks and Poster Sessions The participants were provided opportunities to talk about their own research at “Flash Talks” and during the poster sessions so that they could share their current research with each other.

● Flash Talks on Poster Abstracts One-minute oral presentations on poster abstracts were delivered by each participant on March 7.

● Poster Sessions During the HOPE meeting sessions, the posters prepared by the participants were displayed on

the concourse of the main hall. Each participant was assigned to deliver a presentation in front of his/her poster during the three turns of poster sessions scheduled from March 8 to 10.

● Best Poster Awards The HOPE meeting organizing committee members and moderators reviewed and chose posters

that had achieved outstanding excellence. Five participants were given the “Best Poster Award”, and among them, one was given the highest “HOPE Award”.

ActivitiesTeam Presentation 107 participants from Asia-Pacific Africa regions were divided into 11 teams in the HOPE meeting. On the last day of the meeting, teams comprising multinational members delivered presentations. With free theme, each team had been working on their presentation with their own unique ideas and knowledges during the HOPE meeting periods. The team presentation preparation provided the participants with experience working with multinational members. Participants gave excellent presentations and at the closing ceremony, Team A won the “Best Team Presentation Award” and Team E won the “Unique Presentation Award”.

Concert and Cultural Programs The participants refined their perspectives of culture by enjoying the Japanese traditional “Kabuki” performance at concert, and also by trying their hand at Japanese calligraphy, Ikebana (flower arrangement), Tea ceremony or Origata (Japanese Wrapping).

Excursion and Research Facility Visit The participants took a trip to Tokyo to visit Edo-Tokyo-Museum, TOKYO SKYTREE®, and Asakusa to see both side of historical and new culture or architectures of Tokyo. The participants also visited some research institutions located in Tsukuba-city, a top echelon science city, shown below:● Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA)● National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology

(AIST)● National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS)● High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (KEK)

Organizer: Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS)

The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) was founded in 1932 through an endowment granted by Emperor Showa. In 2003, it converted to an independent administrative institution, established by way of a national law for the purpose of contributing to the advancement of science in all fields of the natural and social sciences and the humanities. JSPS plays a pivotal role in the administration of a wide spectrum of Japan's scientific and academic programs. While working within the broad framework of government policies established to promote scientific advancement, JSPS carries out its programs in a manner flexible to the needs of the participating scientists. JSPS's operation is supported in large part by annual subsidies from the Japanese Government. Its main functions are: - To foster young researchers, - To promote international scientific cooperation, - To award Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, - To support scientific cooperation between the academic community and industry, and - To collect and distribute information on scientific research activities.

HOPE Dialogue – Side Event for High School Students The HOPE Dialogue led by Profs. Ada Yonath and Barry J. Marshall was held on Tuesday 8 March as a side event of the HOPE Meeting. 44 high school students recruited from the high schools that participated in the JSPS Science Dialogue attended the one-hour group discussion sessions followed by the 30-minute free talk session. The students were divided into two groups to engage in discussions with each lecturer. They asked many questions to the lecturers such as their research activities, life experience from their childhood, and the motive to become a researcher. Afterwards, the participant students commented: “It was valuable experience for me to listen to the Nobel laureate’s talk within a close distance; I felt that the lecturers lent their ears to every question; I was stimulated by the students from other high schools.”
