2014 was banner year for the Vancouver Watersheds Alliance. Our programs continue to grow as we educate and engage the community. We were featured in the Columbian newspaper during three months in the spring, full page, full color ads. We are grateful for this opportunity, donated by the Columbian, to reach out to the community and educate the public about watershed issues. We held a successful silent auction with the help of local businesses and community supporters.

Our outreach and educational events continue to expand. This year we added a new activity at the annual Columbia River Watersheds Festival. It is extra special to see urban children and youth learn about our

environment and the importance of a healthy watershed, by putting on a “play” acting out the urban water cycle. We offer simple sticker activities at our educational event booths for children to take home reminders of the conservation lessons they have learned. Part of our mission is to get people, especially families, outdoors. We have

families, community and school groups, and individuals attend our events to lend a helping hand to make our area a better, greener place to live. It is always a pleasure to visit past planting sites and see the forest return to our urban creekside. I look forward in the coming years to an ever-greener Vancouver.

VISION STATEMENT: “Rejuvenating Vancouver’s natural spaces and urban places.”

MISSION STATEMENT: “To bring together and engage the community to protect and

enhance the natural environment of Vancouver’s Watersheds”

As a 501(c)(3), we provide environmental restoration, community outreach, promote volunteerism, and care for our water resources. Vancouver Watersheds Alliance works independently with other community and governmental organizations as well as volunteers to accomplish our mission.

Page 4: Report of 2014 Activities by the Vancouver Watersheds ... · Info@VancouverWatersheds.org PO Box 177 Vancouver, WA 98666 501(c)(3) Tax ID: 26-1506315 ... We continue to make print

We engaged nearly 30,000 community members and children at educational fairs, festivals and film nights this year. Our film series continued at the Vancouver Public Library hosting an average of 100 people per showing. We continue to grow our volunteer and member base.

Restoration and clean-up are vital parts of our mission. This includes maintaining the beauty of our public spaces by removal of invasive plants, particularly ivy. This year’s planting projects restored creek-side habitat and improved the overall health of the ecosystem. Our Project Restore program targets private property owners to restore environmentally sensitive creekside areas.

Vancouver Watersheds Alliance Quarterly Report

2014 First Quarter Report To: Geri Kromminga, Brian Carlson, , Tim Esary, Amber Fox, Robert Bacon, Rainy Rau, Rich McConaghy, Tanya Gray, Charles Ray, Rhonda Morgan, Dorie Sutton, Loretta Callahan, Hailey Heath From: Sunrise O’Mahoney The following summarizes the highlights of the Vancouver Watersheds Alliance program for January, February, and March 2014

Staff Sunrise O’Mahoney, Executive Director Jeannie Hoxer, Program Coordinator Nancy Newland, Office Coordinator, part-time

Board Update Robert Bacon and Rainy Rau joined the board this quarter. Among other things the Board is reviewing and revising the Neighborhood grant standards and parameters. New guidelines expected in the 2nd quarter.

Marketing Update Our brand update is complete and we are replacing print pieces through attrition only. Our website is current and enhanced. We are keeping a unified appearance at events, in correspondence and in our networking and outreach circles. The Columbian will run a series of environmental ads we have designed free of charge during the 2nd quarter. We continue to make print materials very paper efficient. All our handouts are mini when possible and some are even business card size.

Fundraising Based on a Board decision last quarter, we now have our Annual Meeting in the 1st quarter rather than the 3rd quarter. We planned an event and silent auction in February. Due to a combination of bad weather and unpredictable attendance, we had to cancel the event this year. We were able to salvage the silent auction by moving the donations to our eBay portal. This auction is successfully ongoing and will conclude in the 2nd quarter.

Grant Opportunities VWA has been actively researching grant-funding opportunities. Staff has attended events and workshops to determine which grants have the best chance of being a source of funding. Many organizations require those seeking grants to have a specific project and/or an active and contributing board. We are examining the ramifications of these requirements. We received a grant from the Washington Foundation for the Environment for $500 to support our film festival. We have a few grants in progress as well.

Project Restore (P3) The P3 program was officially named “Project Restore”. The Marketing Plan, Project Timeline, and Work

Plan are in place. The Project Restore group meets twice a month. The focus is working with property

owners and the Greenways and Sensitive Lands Team as partners and provides several methods to recruit

and secure properties for restoration projects. Restoration work will include removing non-native

invasive plants from degraded urban natural areas and planting native trees and shrubs to increase

canopy and improve water quality.

Film Series Fourth Tuesday of the month 6 - 8 PM, January - June. Free admission & pizza. The events host anywhere from

70 – 150 attendees.

THE LAST OCEAN. Tuesday, January 28, 6PM

With stunning footage, profiles the international

battle over commercial fishing in the last pristine

ocean ecosystem on earth, the Ross Sea in

Antarctica.

H2OIL. Tuesday, February 25, 6PM

With hope and courage H2Oil tells the story of the

process of oil sands extraction located under

Alberta’s pristine boreal forests, one of the most

significant, and destructive projects of our time.

ARISE. Tuesday, March 25, 6PM

Daryl Hannah narrates the stories of a diverse

group of 13 women in five countries who have initiated solution-oriented environmental projects in their

towns and villages.

Education & Outreach Our education materials have been updated. For the spring we have a

watershed demonstration activity for our booth. The activity vividly

displays the difference between runoff from hardscape and runoff from a

healthy greenway buffer. For younger children we have tiny reminder

stickers to color and place as reminders at home. There are a dozen

different themes. These vary in theme based on the event.

Film Lending Library The lending library is open for business. This joint effort with Peter DuBois, Clark County Department of Environmental Services Sustainability and Outreach Program Coordinator makes all the films we have shown over the years available to borrow, free of charge to the public. See our website for details.

Education & Outreach Our education materials are a popular draw to our booth at events. For younger children we have tiny reminder stickers to color. These vary in theme based on the event. The

main event this quarter was the St Patrick’s Day Event, Arbor Day, Eco Fair and Home & Garden.

Grant Opportunities VWA has been actively researching grant-funding opportunities. Staff is working on applications with Patagonia, Keen, Aveda and Meyer Memorial Foundation.

Project Restore (P3) A few key neighborhoods have been identified to target for

this project. Marketing materials are in the works to address

the specific concerns and questions that these homeowners

have. The sites were visited and the various challenges for this

public/private partnership were reviewed. Timing will try to

take advantage of the ideal planting season ahead.

Neighborhood Grants Due to the change in grant priorities from the Board our grant program is being adjusted. Our program

coordinator has been making the neighborhood meetings to promote the opportunities available through

this program. Keeping our focus on our mission is a key concern. We have new promotional materials to

better explain this program to the associations. Neighborhood

We sponsor corporate or group events that are custom tailored to the needs

and timeframe of the group. This quarter we planned Stewardship events for

Comcast, New Season and Hewlett Packard. The events usually last about 3

hours. The group provides the volunteers and VWA provides the locations,

tools, instruction and refreshments. Most events involve, removing invasives

such as ivy or blackberry and/or planting trees. We are looking to expand this

program to encourage more businesses and community groups to volunteer.

We have a “White Paper” series in the works so we can begin approaching

groups and corporations directly.

Board Retreat The annual board retreat was held on September 15, 2014. In attendance were, Sunrise O’Mahoney, Jeannie Hoxer, Nancy Newland, Geri Kromminga, Amber Fox, Robert Bacon, Rainy Rau, Kris Olinger, Nancy Hedrick, and Kari Mullikin. The retreat covered what VWA needs to move forward over the next year and up to 5 years. The end conclusion was the decision that VWA needs a strategic plan. The board gave the approval for Sunrise O’Mahoney, ED to move forward in getting bids. The retreat was very productive in having an open conversation/brainstorming about what we like about the work we are doing currently and where we see room for growth and improvement. There were great idea we can implement now and many others we can incorporate into the strategic planning stage.

2014 Fourth Quarter Report The following summarizes the highlights of the Vancouver Watersheds Alliance program October, November, December 2014.

Staff Sunrise O’Mahoney, Executive Director Jeannie Hoxer, Program Coordinator Nancy Newland, Office Coordinator

Board Update The Board met October 1, November 5 and December 3, 2014. Kari Mullikin, Kris Olinger and Nancy Hedrick were approved for the board. Board voted on hiring a consultant to conduct a strategic plan in 2015. Annual Celebration (aka Annual Meeting) planning is underway. Tentative date is March 12th at the Water Resource and Education Center.

Stewardship Make a Difference Day (MADD) was held October 25, 2013 at Leverich Park. Over

125 volunteers spent the morning planting 3,400 trees. This annual event is one of

our main avenues to reach the public in a large scale call-to-action. The tree

planting in these sensitive areas makes a big impact on water quality. We use this

opportunity to further educate the public about environmental issues. We also

promote our grant program and other work.

Neighborhood Grants: Due to the change in grant priorities from the Board our grant program is being adjusted. Our program

coordinator has been making the neighborhood meetings to promote the opportunities available through

this program. Keeping our focus on our mission is a key concern. We have new promotional materials to

better explain this program to the associations.

We have also been heavily promoting our Invasive Tree Removal opportunity through our Neighborhood

Grants program.
