I. Mission

The Institute of Mental Health (IMH) is a centre of excellence for promotion and advocacy of

better community mental health, through advancing science and disseminating knowledge in

mental illness and mental health by intensive education, quality training, and rigorous research.

IV. Overview of Programmes Conducted by the IMH (January to June 2014)

Public Education

(1) Certificate Course in Mental Health (MHC10)

The 12-hour Certificate Course in Mental Health (MHC) has been specifically designed to serve

the needs of the society since October 2009. It provides training on common mental illnesses and

skills in managing mental illnesses to professionals, health care professionals and related

personnel who may come into contact with people with mental health problems or their carers in

their daily practice by comprehensive lectures, case discussions/ vignettes, and interactive

workshops. In view of the overwhelming responses from the previous classes, the tenth course

(MHC10) was conducted on 15 and 22 February 2014 with 78 participants including health care

professionals of the Hospital Authority, government departments and non-government

organisations.

(2) Mental Health Training Programme for the Richmond Fellowship of

Hong Kong

Based on the content of the Certificate Course in Mental Health developed and delivered, this

6.5-hour Mental Health Training Programme was tailor-made for the health workers of the

Richmond Fellowship of Hong Kong to enhance their knowledge and skills in identifying and

managing different mental disorders. The programme was successfully conducted on 24 May

2014, with 29 participants.

(3) Basic Psychological Life Support (BPLS) Course

The Public Education Subcommittee (PES) and the Hong Kong St. John Ambulance have

been co-organising the Basic Psychological Life Support (BPLS) Course since January 2011.

The BPLS Course provides knowledge on common mental health problems and treatments,

positive psychology, recognising stress and anxiety and skills in dealing with the

psychological reactions of victims in a first aid situation. A total of 63 members of the general

public participated in the two-day BPLS Provider Courses that were held in March and May

2014.

(4) Educational Materials

The publications of the IMH provide a good source of information on mental illnesses and

self-help guide to the general public. The information is handy and easily accessible at the

service units of CPH and online at the IMH website. To ensure the information is accurate

and up-to-date, the PES has continuously been reviewing all educational materials and

reprinting those pamphlets with high demand. The materials updated from January to June

2014 were listed as follows:

Two new educational pamphlets were produced:

Bipolar affective disorder “不鬱不躁”

Overcoming grief and bereavement “克服哀傷期”

Four educational pamphlets were reviewed and printed:

Stress management “如何面對壓力?”

Anger management “如何處理憤怒”

Unemployment “面對失業怎麼辦?”

A series in elderly depression “老年抑鬱症系列之防患未然、絕處逢生、細說因由、

治療有法”

All of the above updated materials are available for free distribution in different service units

and accessible on the IMH website.

In addition, one pamphlet of the Royal College of Psychiatrists “老年抑鬱症” was updated

and uploaded to the IMH website.

(5) Health Column on Sing Tao Daily

The PES continues to collaborate with Sing Tao Daily in publishing articles written by CPH

colleagues as an effective medium to disseminate mental health knowledge to the public. The

articles are published under the health column “保健至專” inside the feature page of the

paper.

CPH colleagues have contributed to this project by actively submitting their articles.

Published articles are shared to all CPH staff via email. The collection of articles has also

been uploaded to the IMH website for public access.

(6) Media Interview

A media interview by the Apple Daily was arranged to share the causes, treatments and

prevention of depression. The article was published on 16 March 2014 and distribution of

three mental health education materials including the Fun Chess ( “開心FUN” 遊戲棋), a

VCD on depression (抑鬱症大探索) and a self-help kit (花萼行動 - 情緒處理錦囊) were

available for the public until 30 June 2014.

(7) Mass Media Programme

The PES had coordinated with the RTHK Radio One to promote public mental health through

a phone-in radio programme “精靈一點”. A series of four topics on different psychiatric

drugs, including mood stabilisers, antidepressants, antipsychotics, anxiolytics and hypnotics

were delivered by psychiatrists of CPH, which had been launched on four consecutive Fridays

from 6 to 27 June 2014.

Professional Training

(1) Basic Training on Mentalisation Based Therapy (MBT)

A three-day basic training on Mentalisation Based Therapy (MBT) organised by the

Professional Training Subcommittee (PTS) is scheduled on 12 to 14 September 2014. The

PTS is pleased to invite Professor Anthony W. Bateman, the Consultant Psychiatrist and

Psychotherapist of the Halliwick Unit, Barnet, Enfield and Haringey Mental Health Trust in

London, to deliver the three-day training. This training aims at providing MBT training to

professional staff in psychiatric services on the rationale and application of MBT. Promotion

of the workshop was launched on 20 March 2014 and the course had been fully enrolled.

Psychiatric Nursing Education

(1) Graduation Ceremony of Enrolled Nurse

The Graduation Ceremony for Class 9 of the Enrolled Nurse (Psychiatric) Training

Programme for the Hospital Authority was held on 6 February 2014. There were 27 pupil

nurses graduated.

Research

(1) Research Skills Training Workshop

The Research Subcommittee has been organising Research Skills Training Workshops which

comprise a series of interactive small-group workshops conducted by experienced researchers.

The series of workshops repeats once every six months, and is open to all CPH staff. The

workshops aim at promoting a culture of research and enhancing research skills among the

staff of CPH. The first series of five workshops in 2014 was held from January to June, and

trainee family physicians from Tuen Mun Hospital (TMH) were invited. A total of 26 CPH

and TMH staff members had participated in these five workshops.

(i) Critical Appraisal of Research Papers (26 March 2014)

This workshop was conducted by Dr. William Chui which was about critical appraisal of

research papers.

(ii) How to Conduct a Meta-analysis? (16 April 2014)

The workshop was conducted by Dr. Evelyn Wong. This workshop focused on conducting a

research by using meta-analysis knowledge and techniques.

(iii) Writing Research Proposals and Scientific Papers (30 April 2014)

Conducted by Dr. Simon Lui, this workshop focused on research methodology, the concept of

research paradigm and common pitfalls in research design.

(iv) Application of SPSS for Clinical Study (4 June 2014)

This workshop was conducted by Mr. Kenny Wong, Manager from the HA Head Office. He

demonstrated the basic concepts of biostatistics and the use of SPSS, a statistics software

commonly used in biomedical research. The workshop provided participants with hands-on

experiences on how to create data files and perform data analysis with SPSS.

(v) Searching Medical Literature and Using Reference Management Software (11 June

2014)

The workshop was conducted by Dr. Joanna Lam. This workshop focused on techniques in

performing online search for medical literature and techniques in using Endnote, a citation

management software.

(2) Research Seminar

Research Seminars are part of the regular in-house training programme for medical staff. A

research seminar entitled “Neuroimaging Studies in psychosis” was presented by Dr. Karen

Hung on 25 June 2014. A total of 50 medical staff members attended this seminar.

(3) Research Studies

As of June 2014, CPH has more than 20 on-going research projects and the IMH is actively

involved in the following research projects:

“A four-year prospective family study in patients suffering from first episode

psychosis: A quest for intermediate phenotypes and aetiology of psychosis”- Data

collection stage. As of June 2014, a total of 202 patients with first-episode psychosis

have been phenotyped whereas 91 healthy controls and 324 patients have been recruited

for endophenotyped and genotyping respectively. Exercises to assure the quality of data

has been conducted in the past two months. An article entitled “Do patients with

first-episode schizophrenia have problems in prospective remembering?” has been

submitted to the Journal of Psychiatric Research and is under review. Another article

entitled “Subjective pleasure experience across the schizophrenia spectrum” has also

been submitted to the Psychiatry Research and is under review.

“Neurological soft signs in chronic patients with psychosis and its susceptibility

genes: An extended study” – Completed. The data collected will be combined with

other projects for further genetic analysis.

“Theory of mind performance in patient with first-episode schizophrenia and

first-degree relatives: A cross-sectional case control study” – Write up stage.

“Schizotypy traits or features in nonpsychotic first-degree relatives of patients with

schizophrenia: Cluster analysis using the Chapman Psychosis Proneness Scales” –

Write up stage.

“Searching for intermediate phenotypes for psychosis: a functional MRI study on

neuroanatomical markers for psychosis and gene-brain mapping” – Donation fund

and approval from the Institutional Review Board have been obtained. The first MRI

scan is expected to be started in September 2014.

Patient and Carer Resource

(1) Patient and Carer’s Education

An educational talk on communication skills entitled “病發徵兆” cum the Annual General

Meeting for members of the Happy Sharing Group was held on 13 January 2014, with a total

of 41 participants.

(2) Community Partnership and Teen’s Life Coach Events

A community partnership and teens life coach programme was jointly organised with the

Jardine Matheson Group. The programme included the following activities during the

reporting period:

“City Orienteering” was conducted on 15 February 2014, with 14 patients participated.

“Central Rat Race 2014 (鼠戰中環)” was conducted on 23 June 2014 with 10 patients

participated.

Singing Competition and barbeque was held on 20 May 2014 with 19 patients

participated. One of our patients had won the second runner-up in the singing competition

(individual) and our patients had also won the Group Best Costume Award.

Visit to Newlife Farm was conducted on 31 May 2014 with 20 patients participated.

Mindset Fun Day was conducted on 28 June 2014 with 24 patients participated.

(3) Partnership Programme with Mass Volunteers Service

A visit to Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden was conducted on 28 February 2014, which was

jointly organised with the Mass Volunteers Service under the Mental Health in Mind (HIM)

Programme. A total of 15 patients and the volunteers of San Wui Commercial Society

Secondary School participated in this event.

Hospital Archives & Gallery Exhibition

(1) Seminar on using Playback Theatre with Mental Health Patients

The Seminar on using Playback Theatre with Mental Health Patients was successfully held on

5 March 2014. Mr. Eddie Yu from the Hong Kong Centre for Psychodrama and Drama

Therapy Ltd. introduced Playback Theatre and its application in the mental health setting.

Over 70 audiences, including psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, welfare workers, social

workers, occupational therapists as well as pupil nurses attended the seminar. Participants

found the seminar very informative.

V. Statistics of Educational Activities (Organised by the IMH and Invitations

Received)

The summary of all educational activities conducted by the IMH from January to June 2014

was presented as per Appendix I. The activities were categorised into two types. The first type

refers to the activities that were initiated and organised by the IMH and the other type is

invitations received from other organisations for conducting talks or training courses.

A total of 28 activities were conducted, among which 20 activities were organised by the

IMH. A total projected net income of $151,578 was earned from the activities with 938

overall attendances. The breakdown of the activities by topics, target groups and geographical

locations of the participants is presented as per Appendix I.

Activities Organised by the IMH

A substantial fraction of the activities organised by the IMH during the reporting period

focused on topics related to general adult psychiatry, which accounted for 55% of the

activities held. The activities organised by the IMH mainly targeted at professional carers and

patients. A projected net income of $86,530 was generated from the activities organised by the

IMH.

Invitations from Other Organisations Among the 8 invitations that we received from external organisations, including government

departments, non-government organisations (NGO) and educational institutions, most

requested for delivering training courses targeted for the professional carers and the public.

The projected net income was $65,048.

Loan Record of Mental Health Educational Products Six applications from NGO / educational institution for borrowing our educational exhibition

boards / obtaining pamphlets or quoting / copying our publications, and linking up the IMH

website were received and approved.
