Greetings, friends!

Looking back at 2016 was a treat—it was another in a string of great years. We opened the doors on the Marine Thrift in January, added some incredible staff, executed a solid year of programming, the second Race to Alaska, and the 40th Wooden Boat Festival. It was a milestone year in a way that felt less like an unforeseen windfall and more like the steady solid progress of an organiza-tion executing to plan.

2017 has more of the fast and steady progress that we’ve laid out in the strategic plan we unveiled early this year. We’re on the move, reaching out and finding ways to collaborate with partners like the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding and the Center for Wooden Boats in Seattle—pooling our resources for the good of the mission and to the increased sustainability of all involved. We’ll have new programs, new experiments, and new ways for people to engage. Our focus this year is both near and really far —improvements to make our campus more compelling and usable for casual visitors, and international trips to let the mission and programs take flight and give our program participants the chance for rare adventure.

It was a great year, and the prologue for another one.

Thanks for your part of it,

Steve Oliver, Board PresidentJake Beattie, Executive Director

The sea is simply the best teacher we know.

SUMMERYOUTH PROGRAMSOne morning a planning meet-ing was briefly interrupted by a tangent that couldn’t be ignored: “There’s a pirate using the copier.” It was Tim, our long-time summer program instructor, decked out in a tricorn hat and Jack Sparrow hair. Pirate Week, with young folks getting their piratical dose of maritime learn-ing, was just one of over nine weeks of kids learning to sail, building their own little wooden toy boat, and discovering the rich marine and tidal life of Port Townsend Bay.

The scholarships we have received the past few summers have enabled my son to participate in the amazing youth sail camp at the Northwest Maritime Center. With your support he has been able to learn to sail and will be able to participate in one of the many outdoor activities the Pacific Northwest has to offer. He has enjoyed this amazing program and looks forward to participating in more this summer. Thank you so much for your continued support in this program! —Janel & Xander Bollinger270300

As one of my most reluctant learners reflected about his experience at the Maritime Center, “If only school was like this everyday!” When I asked him gently what he meant, he said “You get to learn by doing, everything fits together like a puzzle.” —Chimacum Teacher

One thing I learned is that it is okay to be open and talk to others when you’re having a problem or something you’re keeping to yourself that’s hurting you. I really learned that this year. —Bravo Team student

I love working with other people my age to navigate the waters around where we live. Getting to see marine wildlife is something that I always look forward to, and being able to just BE on the water. I love that I feel comfortable on longboats. —Anonymous Student

Certainly one of the most ambitious and interesting projects to come through the boatshop was the 81’ spar for the 63 ½’ Sparkman & Stephens cutter Orient, launched in 1938 in Hong Kong.

In 2015 Doug Jones of Traditional Boatworks approached Boatshop Manager Scott Jones to ask about space rental for a large spar build. He needed a well-equipped, long, warm, and dry shop. And as it turned out they’re not exactly on every corner—not even in Port Townsend, where wooden boats are the rule. Doug landed the job, and for all 12 months of 2016 the 81’ spar, from a stack of rough spruce to finished piece of functional art, was a centerpiece of the shop.

Upon completion, the spar was boxed and shipped to Santa Barbara, CA, where Orient is berthed. All metal work was done by the experts at Port Townsend Foundry. Wood was sourced from Edensaw. The three shipwrights who did the work live right here in town. Gus Sebastian of Olympic Boat Transport loaded the spar onto the shipping trailer. Way to go, Port Townsend!

Shipwrights’ Regatta2016 celebrated the 26th anniversary of this well-loved race. Only the bravest come out to compete in this February race that officially kicks off the start of the sailing season. The Shipwrights’ Regatta has long been about getting as many people out on the water as possible, no matter what their sailing experience, and introducing them to the sport of sailing.

Classic Mariners’ RegattaThe Classic Mariners’ Regatta is all about beautiful wooden boats,high-caliber sailors racing their hearts out, and a friendly atmosphere that is more potluck than yacht club. This year 23 boats took to the water in what might be described (depending on the skipper) as the absolutely perfect weather—80 degrees and windy. The races were stunning, the boats were beautiful, competition was fierce.

Thank you to the Port Townsend Sailing Association for partnering with us on such successful events.

I grew up in New York, on the long Island Sound shores, where I was a boat crazy kid. If I wanted to get out onto the water, it would always be in someone else’s boat, and crewing. I learned to sail that way, in small boats, racing dinghies and in the International One Designs, and others. Later I had a rowboat of my own, and worked on the harbor, caring for other people’s boats. That’s the only way a kid with no money could go sailing back then and there. Access was very limited. You had to have a key, or a club membership to be there. Coming here was like coming home. I have watched the Northwest Maritime Center grow, from a dream on paper, to a functioning reality. And our ports are accessible to all. I have been here long enough to see some young people pass through the sailing and seamanship programs, as part of their elementary and high school curriculum, and now they are in college, or working in the maritime industry, using the maritime and life skills that they gained here. This kind of practical education is priceless. These programs prepare young people for life, and strengthen their roles in the community. That’s why I am a supporter.

Joel is a wealth of knowledge about sound systems, AV equipment, and boats, too—a great combina-tion for our needs. His attention to detail and professionalism with the presenters has raised our reputation for quality each year. He would like to acknowledge the team of people who train, plan, and work hard for months to get the scores of presentations up and running smoothly, from our Speaker Series to the Wooden Boat Festival, and other events in between. “Being part of the AV Team is an amazing experience and honor,” he says.

While his formal training is in music, history and education, Joel has been on the water almost his entire life, and has sailed many leagues in waters from Grenada to Maine, the PNW, and the Pacific. He was first drawn to Port Townsend by the boats in 1989; he packed up and moved to the Salish Sea within six months. The boating community and sailing was too good to resist. Although he was an unofficial volunteer for the Wooden Boat Festival starting in the early 1990’s (he felt guilty about sneaking in), he has been a registered volunteer since about 2008.

Currently he and his wife sail an Alberg 35 here in Port Townsend. And yes, it has great speakers on board!

Surrounded by stunning vistas of snow covered mountains and a beckoning inland sea nestled between a forest clad beach and a waterfront resplendent with Victorian era buildings, Point Hudson harbor in Port Townsend was love at first landfall. It was as beautiful and charming

as any place I’d ever seen, and I had seen some amazing harbors. Three years earlier I had crewed aboard sailboats from my hometown on the Columbia River to Hawaii via California, Mexico, Costa Rica, and the Galapagos. The magic of that year’s offshore sailing inspired a dream of cruising aboard my own wooden boat. Once home, I jumped at the chance to join friends in a communal boatbuilding endeavor and to take a job at a sail loft to help make our sails.

I first beheld Point Hudson on a glorious spring day in 1975 from the deck of the Odyle, the Skoo-kum 47 ketch we’d built from a bare hull in Bellingham. We were joining the Moclips, a ferro- cement gaff cutter communally built on a remote part of Washington’s coast. Her crew had told us there was boat work to be had in Port Townsend.

We soon rented the empty buildings on what has become Point Hudson’s “Marine Trades Corri-dor.” Sam Conner, the Moclips captain, started a wooden boat building business on the ground floor of the armory building and concocted a scheme with Wooden Boat Magazine’s Tim Snider for a Wooden Boat Festival in “our” harbor. I enthusiastically joined them as secretary of the board of the fledgling Wooden Boat Foundation whose mission was to celebrate and preserve wooden boats and to promote the necessary skills to build, maintain, and navigate them into a future of teaching and sharing these satisfying and empowering joys. In 1976 our first Wooden Boat Festi-val was a resounding success, and it rekindled my dream to have my own wooden boat.

I sadly said farewell to my Odyle shipmates, and in 1978 I started Port Townsend Sails. Living in the sail loft the first two years afforded cheap housing and a grand view of Point Hudson. In Janu-ary of 1979 a 25’ Danish built Nordic Folkboat sailed into the harbor sporting a “For Sale” sign. I was in! My Folkboat’s first haulout became a refit, after which, with all proper ceremony, she was rechristened Lorraine, in honor of my mother.

In the following decades, the Sail Loft and my family regularly supported my sailing with customers, with friends, and on sail training vessels to many islands on many oceans. I still cherish sailing Lorraine on the Salish Sea and consider Point Hudson Harbor the loveliest of landfalls. The Northwest Maritime Center now graces the harbor’s entrance, providing a home for the Wooden Boat Foundation and providing far more programs than those we dreamed of long ago. For more than 40 years, the annual Wooden Boat Festival has filled Point Hudson with wooden boats of every size and description, glistening with fresh paint and varnish, carrying dreams of adventure, and bringing timeless inspiration to those who love the sea.
