“Experience was quick and easy. No unnecessary tests. Nothing to improve. Wonderful experience.” – Phelps patient

In thirteen words, this patient summed up the philosophy of health care delivery at Phelps Hospital.

Everything we do strives to achieve these goals. Our new Interventional Radiology Suite ensures your diagnostic testing is done quickly and accurately. Our daVinci surgical robot with its pinpoint accuracy helps you heal faster. Our new elevators bring you to your destination quickly. Our complimentary reading glasses and phone chargers save you a return trip home.

But we never forget that the most effective part of healthcare is our people. Our exceptional clinicians, experienced nurses, skilled technicians, and the rest of our caring staff combine extraordinary skill with boundless compassion for all who come to Phelps. We know there are many places where a patient could chose to receive care and we appreciate the opportunity to help someone heal. We thank you for entrusting Phelps with your health and for choosing to support world-class, community-based care with your generosity. We hope that every time you come to Phelps, you have a “wonderful experience.”

• The Hyperbaric Medicine Department at Phelps has achieved Level Two Accreditation with Distinction from the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS). Achieving “with

distinction” means the team exceeded the precise requirements of UHMS evaluation. The UHMS survey team evaluates the department on over 600 requirements, specifications, and guidelines specific to hyperbaric and dive medicine.

• Phelps Hospice recently achieved Level 4 status as a participating partner in the We Honor Veterans Program. Established by the National Hospice and Palliative Care organization and the Veterans Administration, Phelps Hospice works collaboratively to continuously improve its ability to serve the unique needs of veterans receiving hospice care in our community.

Since becoming a member of the Northwell Health System, Phelps Hospital has benefited from programmatic and research opportunities, economies of scale, and the sharing of knowledge available from a system of exceptional hospitals and well-established academic medical centers.

Investments by Northwell Health and generous support from our donors have powered outstanding growth and development here at Phelps. In 2017 alone, Phelps celebrated:

Opening of the Northwell Cancer Institute at Phelps

The Institute offers innovative and supportive cancer services under one roof, including hematology and medical oncology, infusion, radiation oncology and general and sub-specialty cancer surgery, all on the Phelps campus. Patients have access to a wide range of renowned expert surgical specialists like Dr. Alice Police, who is widely recognized as a game-changer and

an early adopter of many innovative surgical technologies in the treatment of breast cancer.

New Diagnostic and Treatment Resources As a designated Diagnostic Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology (ACR), the hospital is a leader in diagnostic imaging modalities. Phelps celebrated the opening of a $12 million upgraded Interventional Radiology Suite, adding the latest 3D mammography, 128 slice CT scan and 3T MRI technologies to the hospital’s main floor.

Enhanced Patient Experience

Our goal is to make any visit to Phelps as stress-free as possible. Our new signage throughout the hospital campus provide clear directions to our various facilities. Our new elevators help you reach your destination quicker. And our renovated cafeteria, with its emphasis on fresh meals, has received rave reviews.

Coming soon! – New Private Patient Rooms Twelve new, additional private rooms on the third floor of the main hospital are due to open in 2018. All rooms will be ADA compliant, have dialysis capabilities, new showers, headwalls with necessary utilities, all the provisions needed for future telemetry/patient monitoring, and new furniture and equipment. Among the 12 rooms, will be two specialty rooms – a dedicated bariatric room with a continuous lift throughout the bedroom and bathroom and a dedicated airborne isolation room.

Major Milestones

Page 4: Report to the Community 2017...the education of care providers and collaborate with other providers in our region to develop innovative ways to deliver exceptional and effective care.

Corporate Leadership and Philanthropy – a winning combinationRecognizing the important role businesses and corporate leaders play in supporting and promoting strong and accessible healthcare in our community, in 2017, Phelps Hospital inaugurated its new Corporate Leader Program.

The Corporate Leader Program encourages local, regional and national companies and business leaders to support Phelps and helps companies incorporate

philanthropy into their yearly planning. The program gives Phelps an opportunity to recognize our corporate partners for their important support through donations, event sponsorships, gifts-in-kind and much more.

We are grateful to the inaugural members of the Corporate Leader Program who embody the philosophy that a strong community is both good for the hospital and good for business.

If you consider access to exceptional healthcare a vital resource for your business, your employees and your community, we invite you to join the Corporate Leader Program. For more information about joining this important group, please contact Marissa Coratti at (914) 366-3104 or by email at [email protected].

Active Cares, the philanthropic arm of Active International, started in 1997 and since 2008, Active International has recognized the critical role businesses like Phelps play in our community. The company’s generous ongoing support of Phelps’ Champagne Ball and Phelps Classic has served as an example of the importance of investing in healthcare, ensuring that the communities where their employees and associates live enjoy easy access to quality care.

“It’s a privilege to be the biggest and best in the corporate trade industry. And we believe, without hesitation, that our leadership position comes with significant responsibilities, to our clients/corporate trade partners, and to our employees and community. Partnering with Phelps Hospital is a perfect fit. Growing as organizations, Active International and Phelps work closely together to strengthen the community that we all call home.”

Investing in the Future of HealthcareSupport from federal and state agencies and private and corporate foundations provide unique opportunities for Phelps Hospital to explore new ways to deliver quality care. These resources help Phelps train new clinicians, support the education of care providers and collaborate with other providers in our region to develop innovative ways to deliver exceptional and effective care. In 2017,

• Phelps Family Medicine Residency Program was awarded $890,516 from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to support the Northwell Phelps Program Creating Future Clinician Educators. This program uses mentors to help our Family Medicine residents develop leadership skills as they seek careers as clinical educators and leaders in primary care in underserved communities. The Phelps Family Medicine Residency Program, accredited in 2011, is actively addressing the growing need for primary care physicians in the U.S., particularly in New York State. The program is a

collaboration among four major health institutions: Phelps Hospital, Northwell Health, Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine and Open Door Family Medical Centers.

• Phelps was awarded $300,000 to support its collaboration with the New York State Delivery System Reform Incentive Payment (DSRIP) Program. Phelps is part of the Westchester Medical Center Performing Provider Program and is partnering with other healthcare providers to coordinate a continuum of services for Medicaid and uninsured residents of the Hudson Valley with the goal of reducing avoidable hospital use by 25% over 5 years.

• TD Charitable Foundation awarded a $30,000 grant to Phelps for the Nursing Promise Scholarship Program, an initiative that supports the development of talented individuals by providing incentive and financial assistance to Phelps employees who are accepted into an accredited nursing program leading to a registered nursing baccalaureate degree and license.

the day on the scenic course of Sleepy Hollow, which is regarded as one of the most challenging golf courses in the country. Golfers and their guests also

enjoyed a beautiful sunset dinner. Proceeds from the event will be dedicated to facility improvements at Phelps.

festivities included a shrimp and oyster bar, cocktail bar, a menu of surf and turf and late night dancing to the music of Michael Delvecchio. A special thank you to the Ball Tri-Chairs

for their help in ensuring the success of this yearly fundraising event. Over $400,000 was raised, with the fund-a-cause portion to be used towards the purchase of two Xenex Robots. The Robot is a disinfection device that uses pulses of high intensity, high energy ultraviolet light to sterilize a hospital room. It kills all germs and bacteria in 5 minutes! The event ended with guests enjoying a Phelps inspired photobooth with friends!

Northwell Health Walk On Sunday, May 21, 2017, more than 800 people, including staff, family and friends of Phelps and Northern Westchester Hospital (accompanied by an impressive assortment of dogs) participated in the first-ever Northwell Health Walk at Westchester, a two-mile walk held at Franklin D. Serving our Community

Focusing on the unique health care needs of older adults, Phelps’ Vitality Initiative focuses on the physical, social and intellectual aspects of aging. The program develops community partnerships to advance the healthand wellness of our service area and acts as a resource to help older adults age-in-place safely, independently and comfortably. The activities and events of the program include opportunities to enjoy meals and socialize, participate in exercise programs, be a part of engaging mental games and attend workshops designed to help older adults manage their chronic health problems using both clinical resources and community and personal support.

In 2017, Phelps was in the communities of Tarrytown, Pleasantville, Sleepy Hollow, Dobbs Ferry, Nyack, Ossining, Briarcliff, Valhalla, Purchase and more, sharing information on topics ranging from healthy eating, cancer, heart health, to health for older adults and the youngest babies. The information and services we offer at these community events are provided free of charge. We are able to support our community thanks to the extraordinary generosity of our donors for whom community-based healthcare is a priority.

We hope to see you at some of our events in 2018!

Donor Spotlight

Tom and Alice Marie Hales understand the importance of exceptional, community-based care. Over the years, their investment in Phelps has funded the development of new spaces such as the Thomas E. and Alice M. Hales Endoscopy Unit and supported the renovation of the Emergency Department. The Hales have been dedicated supporters of the Annual Champagne Ball for many years with their generous annual match to the Fund-A-Cause. In 2017, their match enabled the hospital to purchase two Xenex LightStrike Germ Zapping Robots, ensuring the cleanest and most sanitary environment possible for our patients to recover and heal. “We are grateful to have such an extraordinary health resource in our community; one we can count on day or night. Phelps has done so much for us, we feel an obligation to give back and make sure the hospital has the resources it needs to continue to provide the best possible care for all who come to Phelps.”

Everyone at Phelps Hospital knows that healthcare doesn’t start and end at our doorway.

Dear Friends:

It is our pleasure to share with you our annual Report to the Community.

This has been a year of remarkable growth and achievement for Phelps. The Northwell Cancer Institute at Phelps, for example, added extraordinary new physicians to its roster of specialists. New physician practices in Neurology and Cardiology provide additional specialized expertise for our community.

And, if you have visited the Phelps campus recently, you’ve seen such nuts-and-bolts improvements as our new signage, our renovated cafeteria and our new elevators.

We are also proud to report that the hospital is on a solid financial footing. In an environment where many health providers are operating in the red, and others are reporting razor thin margins, Phelps had an exceptionally strong year that allows us to re-invest our resources to expand and enhance our market-leading level of care.

Our donors are, as always, a key part of our strength and stability. Philanthropy ensures that Phelps continues to have the resources we need to offer every person who walks through our doors the very best care. We thank you for your ongoing support of all the programs here at Phelps. And we thank you for entrusting to us the most important thing of all: the health of you and your families.

Best wishes for a healthy and enjoyable year.

Sincerely,

Kenneth Taber Daniel Blum Chair, Board of Directors President and CEO
