Advancing Success for Today and Tomorrow

FOR OVER 28 YEARS, IRVINE VALLEY COLLEGE(IVC) has been advancing success for our students and ourcommunity. Nearly 15,000 students now attend IVC eachyear. Many transfer to a four-year college; others move directly into successful careers; and still others experiencethe “community” in our community college, enrichingtheir lives through IVC’s distinguished arts, sports, emeritusand other community programs.

IVC offers an exceptional value for the highest quality education. IVC is ranked #1 in Orange County and #2among all California community colleges in transfer rates.Students transfer successfully not only to UC and CSUcampuses, but also to prestigious universities across the nation—like USC, Stanford, Caltech, Chapman, Columbia,Johns Hopkins, Cornell and Brown, to name just a few.

IVC was just awarded its first National Science Foundationgrant, a three-year Advanced Technological Educationaward of $190,000 to fund the IVC Photonics Initiative, which prepares students for employment in photonics, arapidly growing field that covers the science and engineeringof devices that interact with light.

In August 2013, IVC received a $50,000 grant from theWells Fargo Foundation to support the creation of a newVeterans Services Center for active service members, veteransand military dependents.

We recently held a first-ever summit bringing together 70community and campus partners to begin planning the College of the Future at ATEP, our Advanced Technology &Education Park in Tustin. is initial brainstorming sessionfocused on closing the skills gap and integrating educationand workforce development. We look forward to collaborat-ing on this exciting business and educational partnership.

Whether your interest is in promoting programs such asSTEM (science, technology, engineering and math) to advanceeconomic growth, engaging new students, assisting mid-lifelearners returning to college to retrain, or in educating veterans, we welcome your support and investment.

“As a single mom with limited resources and a full-time job when I enrolled, Irvine

Valley College proved to be a significant turning point in my life. IVC provided me

with the discipline, organization and time management skills—and the resources such

as tutoring in math and writing—to pursue my associate degree in accounting. I had

an excellent support system of counselors and faculty who encouraged me and gave

me the confidence to pursue an advanced degree.”

—Beccie Dawson, current Chief People Officer at THINK Together and long-time

member of the IVC Foundation Board of Governors, was named IVC Alumna of the Year in 2008.

a Master’s degree in Communications/Public Relations (she also wants to spend some

time studying abroad), Kelly plans to find a job at one of the top public relations firms

in either LA or NYC. She says, “IVC has so many great people, both faculty and staff,

who care about your success and will work with you to help achieve your goals. Having

so many people around who will go above and beyond to help you has been my

favorite part of IVC.” Kelly is in the IVC Honors Program and is also a member of Phi

James Bailey was the first athlete to represent the Irvine Valley College graduating class

as a student commencement speaker in 2013. A proud husband and father of four,

James returned to Irvine Valley after being away for a decade, during which time he

faced health and financial trials. His return also marked a comeback to the Lasers

basketball program, where he led Irvine Valley to a second-round appearance in the

state championships. James says he plans to “attend CSU Dominguez Hills or

Northwestern California University School of Law to receive my bachelor’s degree in law,

as well as go for a juris doctor. I want to make a difference through law and politics, while

While a student at Irvine Valley College, Sean Joyce never imagined that someday he

would be working as city manager of Irvine, one of Orange County’s most dynamic

and successful “new” cities. The sixth of seven children, Sean credits IVC for opening

up his world to unlimited possibilities. His first college course, Introduction to Western

Civilization, made him passionate about learning, while capturing his imagination and

inspiring him to succeed. After his successful start at IVC, Sean went on to achieve a

Bachelor of Arts in political science and a Master of Public Administration from Cal

State Fullerton. In 2007, Sean was honored as IVC’s Alumnus of the Year.

Beginning her journey in the world of computers in 1986 as an avionics system engineer

for Boeing, IVC Professor Roopa Mathur had no idea then how important computers

would eventually become in her life. Now a full-time faculty member at Irvine Valley

College, she constantly seeks to engage her students in all areas of computer information

management, from web development and animation, to database and multiple PC

applications. A lover of brainteasers, her motto in life is “Never Stop Learning,”

a philosophy she tries to live by, and one she daily tries to impart to her students.
