Letter from the Board Chair and President
As Georgia slowly climbs its way back from the Great Recession, Georgia’s private, not-for-profit higher education leaders continue to improve efficiencies in order to curtail costs and raise additional scholarship dollars to support students, all while maintaining the high-level of educational quality you expect from private colleges. This is no small feat and it has not been done in isolation.
Georgia Independent College Association’s (GICA) 25 member institutions serve over 71,000 students from across our state, region, nation and world. GICA and our member institutions remain grateful for the support that our devoted donors and our elected officials have provided in helping make a private college education even more affordable. From donor-sponsored GICA scholarship programs to federal and state grants and scholarships, our students and their parents are appreciative of the financial aid they receive as it allows them to choose a quality education that fits most closely with their career goals, as well as their academic, familial and spiritual needs.
GICA member institutions are committed to making the dream of a private higher education a reality for any student with an eagerness to learn. The students served by these institutions are diverse: 57% are minority, 24% are over the age of 25, and 46.3% receive the federal need-based Pell Grant. We are committed to helping all students achieve their dream of a college degree while assisting the state in reaching its educational attainment and workforce goals. A vibrant, growing Georgia economy depends on an educated workforce and GICA member institutions are doing their part to educate Georgians in a timely manner.
In 2012 our member institutions collaborated with one another and various state partners. Collaborative activities included sector-wide articulation agreements, expanded professional development opportunities, voluntary participation in the new State Longitudinal Data System, and increased cost-saving opportunities through the GICA procurement program. We are excited about 2013 and further Association development and expansion of services as we seek to foster partnerships among our members, foundations, corporations and the state.
Without your support of GICA, our 25 member institutions, and the students attending these institutions, many college attainment dreams would not be fulfilled. You make the difference in the lives of thousands of students each year. We are grateful for your continued support of the private, not-for-profit colleges and their students as we seek to not only transform lives, but support and partner with a growing Georgia.
Sincerely,
Dr. Stephen Briggs Dr. Susanna L. BaxterBoard Chair President, GICAPresident, Berry College

Oglethorpe defines a new concept in higher education: “urban liberal arts.”
As Atlanta’s only co-educational liberal arts college, our classic liberal arts and
sciences program meets urban life like no other in the country. An Oglethorpe
education is relevant, rigorous and distinct. It is experienced within a well-
defined wooded sanctuary as well as in one of America’s great cities – Atlanta.
From a student’s first day on campus to his or her graduation, it works to marry
theory with practice.
Within Oglethorpe’s campus walls, students experience the shared venture of
a mind-stretching curriculum, which sharpens each student’s ability to think,
reason,analyzeandcommunicate.Outsidethosewalls,theOglethorpestudent
has abundant opportunities to test and practice what is learned – through real-
world internships, international study and service to community.
The outcome of the Oglethorpe education is a graduate prepared to embark on
a lifetime of productive and relevant work, to lead a life continuously enriched
by exploration and study, and live a life of purpose and difference to others.
Since 1835, Oglethorpe has been preparing students to make a life, make a
living and make a difference.

Collaborating for Success
GICA’s members collaborate in a variety of ways to enhance
the educational experience and operational efficiency of
each campus. In 2011, GICA launched a procurement
program with a number of companies to provide cost-
savings for GICA members in key areas. From procurement
cards to software, GICA’s members save money and time
utilizing GICA’s growing portfolio of contracts. In addition
to cost-savings with contracts, GICA members collaborate
on training and best practices related to environmental
stewardship, compliance and sustainability.
Recently, GICA started a professional development program
for different constituencies in order to provide inexpensive,
high-quality opportunities for professional growth and
development. Whether bringing groups together either
in-person or virtually, GICA members have engaged over
the past year to hear from nationally-known speakers and
from peers on issues related to improving student retention,
serving unique populations like first-generation college
students and on-line learning technologies.

Because Reinhardt faculty and staff believe that how alumni live their lives is
even more important than what they do for a living, “the Reinhardt experience”

“Without considerable scholarship
support a college education would be a
severe financial hardship for me and my
family. Frankly, even with my high GPA
it would have been out of our grasp.”

Award Recipients
“My professors know me personally, want me to
succeed, and would do anything to ensure that I
am prepared for the real world after graduation.”
— emma g., Mercer University
• Founded: GICA was founded by college presidents and corporate executives in 1956.
• Legal Status: A 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charitable organization.
• Membership: Fully SACS-accredited, two- and four-year degree-granting, nonprofit, private, liberal arts institutions in Georgia.
• Purpose: Raise awareness of Georgia’s private, liberal arts colleges and universities. Influence public policy in support of higher education in Georgia. Secure funds and other gifts for the benefit of the member institutions and their students. Promote the member institutions as distinct alternatives in higher education.
• Management: GICA is governed by a Board composed of member college presidents and representatives from business, industry and professional communities. A Board of Advisors supports activities and fundraising.
• Distribution of Contributions: Designated contributions are distributed according to donors’ wishes. Fundraising members share equally in 60% of undesignated funds; the remaining 40% is distributed in proportion to the number of full-time undergraduate students at each institution.
• Endowment: GICA benefits from several endowments. In 2012, the total value of these endowments was over $10 million.
GICA supports private higher education
in Georgia in the areas of public policy,
fundraising for student financial aid, and
collaborative projects, in partnership
with the institutions and business and
community leaders.
