Racial Unity Conversations As violence and racial prejudice continue to divide our country, Jackie Oswald, a member of the Richardson In- terfaith Alliance was motivated to initiate a group aimed at developing conversations leading to racial understand- ing and friendship. This group welcomes people of vari- ous ethnic, racial and religious backgrounds to engage in conversations about race unity. Beginning this fall we will meet every three weeks on Sundays, 3 - 5 pm. The meeting dates are: Sept. 30, Oct. 28, Nov. 18 & Dec. 9 The meetings will be held in the Adult Education Room. We welcome new friends to join in our thought-provoking conversations. Growing in Faith Through Small Groups
Everyone I visit at St. Luke’s wants the church to grow and so do I! Studies show that there are three essential components that deepen our personal faith and disciple-ship, which then enable congregations to grow in mission, outreach and membership. These three essential elements include prayer, Bible study with reflection, and intimate community. The most effective way to meet all three of these needs is to participate in a small group of no more than 12 peo-ple on weekly basis. Small groups are a newer concept and practice in the Lutheran tradition. Our weekly Bible studies have tended to focus on knowledge and understanding, with less time spent in prayer, and building intimacy through sharing one’s life and struggles with the group. Also, we tend to participate in Bible studies when it fits our schedule, and the topic interests us, whereas small groups require high commitment to one’s own faith development, to the well-being of the group, and to its regular meetings. St. Luke’s Mission Statement is to “love, serve and welcome all.” To fulfill this mission to its fullest, God calls each of us into a deeper relationship with Christ Jesus and with each other through prayer, Bible study with reflection, and community. There are two small group opportunities starting this fall and we hope many you will jump in and give it a try! Renovaré Spiritual Formation Group—You may have read about this in
the September Reporter. Using an 8-session workbook, each week focuses on different spiritual practices developed throughout Christian history such as prayer, study, rest, service, simplicity, or celebration. This is a great group for those who have a developed faith and want to deepen their daily spiritu-ality. Join Frieda Chyn and me on Sunday, Oct. 7th at 11:30 in the Library for more information, planning a meeting time, and ordering work-books ($13, financial help available). Rooted Small Group—Rooted is a 12-week small group workbook that reviews the basics of the Christian faith and is great for who desire to re-ground their relationship with God by getting back to basics. Rooted in-cludes devotions for 5 days/week, and two extra times for prayer and a ser-vice project. Pastor Linda has participated in a pilot group using this work-book and has seen how congregations in the metro are using it as a great tool for leadership development and church growth. Join Pr. Linda on Sunday, Oct. 21st at 11:30 in the Library for more information, planning a meeting time, and ordering workbooks (cost is $30 which includes a celebration meal, financial help available). Women of St. Luke’s The October Bible study for Mary Ruth and Rebekah circles is the second ses-sion focusing on the theme of Repentance entitled “Turn, turn, turn: Turning to others.” The focus verse is Matthew 22:37-40. The lesson may be found on page 18 of the Gather magazine (followed by the leader’s guide on page 26) or may be downloaded at gathermagazine.org. Rev. Meghan Johnston Aelabouni is a graduate of California Lutheran University and the Lutheran School of The-ology in Chicago.

Booksome Ladies The Booksome Ladies will meet on Wednesday, Oct. 17th in the Conrad Library at 9:30 a.m. News of the World, by Paulette Jiles is our book for discussion. Set in the aftermath of the Civil War, it is the story of Captain Jefferson Kidd, now seventy-one years old, who drifts through northern Texas performing live readings from newspapers to paying audiences hungry for news of the world. In Wichita Falls, he is offered a fifty-dollar gold piece to deliver a young orphan to her relatives near San Antonio. Four years ear-lier, the child had been captured by a band of Kiowa raiders after they had killed her mother and sister. Now, ten years old, Johanna, blue eyed and very blonde was raised by the Kiowas and has forgotten the English language and her fami-ly. “Rescued” by the U.S. Army, she is to go to her mother’s family, who she does not know. Captain Kidd and the wild Johanna set out on a four hundred mile jour-ney through unsettled territory and unforgiving terrain. She tries to escape at eve-ry opportunity, but gradually draws closer to the man she calls “Kep-dun” and the two forge a bond that marks the difference between life and death. In San Anto-nio, another hurdle awaits, one that will force this respectable man to make a terri-ble choice that will determine Johanna’s fate—and his own. This novel is a defi-nite change-of-pace for our group, teaches us some Texas history and geography, and is a dramatic story. ALL ARE WELCOME! ~Martha Eastwood

Rediscovering Jesus in the Gospels Adult Sunday School: Fall 2018
We know there are four separate Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Yet, after listening to the Gospel reading on countless Sunday mornings, we tend to blend the four Gospels into one fifth Gospel where we quickly lose each author’s individual emphasis on the person, nature, and role of Jesus. Beginning September 9, Larry Wecsler will be leading us to “rediscover Jesus in the Gospels”.
In Rediscovering Jesus in the Gospels, we’ll look at the unique literary framework of each Gospel and review important issues concerning Jesus within those Gospels: His first century environment, his relationships with disciples and opponents, Old Testament references to Jesus life and death, and most importantly, his teachings.
Handouts: We will supply all lesson handouts, which will include all biblical references (NRSV) – this means we won’t have to continually thumb through our Bibles looking for specific citations.
Please join us every Sunday at 8:45 am in the Adult Classroom so that to-gether, we can rediscover Jesus in the Gospels.
