By Amy Hahn Lead Coordinator, Community Resources Resident Life is starting outdoor, staff-led activities, and we hope you’ll join us! We are starting with 6 different classes, each held twice a week, beginning on Monday, June 29. These activities will be for your mind, body, and soul. We plan to have a wide range of offerings to encourage socialization and engagement. Every week, residents are asked to call the Resident Life office at 301-572-8339 after 10am on Wednesdays to sign up for the next week’s activities. Residents do need to sign up each week for the following week’s programming; we will not be taking reservations for activities beyond the upcoming week, to allow a variety of residents to participate. We can only take 9 participants per session but will maintain a waiting list in the case of cancellations. Classes may be cancelled due to inclement weather, and all participants will receive a phone call if cancelled. Please note that no outdoor activities will be held on Friday, July 3, because of the Independence Day holiday. We are excited to offer Bodyweight Boot Camp with Ethan, Yoga with Yaya, Grace For The Moment (A Devotional) with Rev. Bell, and Meeting God in Quiet Places (Truths of Scripture Come Alive) with Rev. Bell, Bingo with Community Resources, and an “Expert” Led Talk with a rotating topic and presenter. Our first topic for the “Expert” Led Talk will be Baseball and Baseball Cards presented by Executive Director Gary Hibbs! He’ll speak on this topic on July 1, July 8, and July 10, so you’ll have three opportunities to enjoy this great talk! Sign up for one session. See the full schedule below for days, times, and locations of all activities. The schedule will stay the same; new topics of the “Expert” Led Talks will be presented weekly, and they will be posted on MyErickson in the Activities section. Please note that all participants must wear a face mask at all times before, during, and after the activities. The furniture will be arranged to maintain 6 feet of distance between participants. Riderwood will clean all seating and other surfaces between events. Participants should not assemble early or congregate in nearby locations before or after the activity. We look forward to seeing you at these staff-led, outdoor activities! Please call 301-572-8339 every Wednesday to register for activities. Resident Life to host small group outdoor events By Charles F. Wurster, PhD Editor-in-Chief and Riderwood TV Manager You always wanted to “see the world,” but now, late in life, you have not finished seeing it all. Cheer up! There are seven continents coming to you, here at Riderwood, in seven hours of comfort in front of your own TV, all for free. The BBC is by far the world’s greatest producer of Natural History Documentaries. BBC will show you the most magnificent scenery, the mammals, birds, and other creatures from the bottom of the ocean to the highest peaks on Earth, on all seven continents, with the most remarkable photography you have ever seen. If you have spent your life traveling and have explored all these places, you still have not seen most of what you will see in these films. Narration is by the famed David Attenborough, an expert zoologist, who has been doing this since 1967. He was 94 in May and is making more documentaries than ever. These BBC documentaries will take you to amazing places and show you things you didn’t know existed. But then, maybe you already spent cold months camping high in the Himalayas to catch a glimpse of a rare snow leopard. Probably not, but the BBC will take you there, and you will see one. Up close! You will also fly low over those incredible mountains and see seven continents of scenery like you never saw it before. Documentaries of the past 20 years have included Planet Earth, The Blue Planet, Life of Birds, Life of Mammals, and coming to Riderwood on seven Tuesdays starting June 30 on Riderwood Channel 972 will be Seven Worlds, One Planet. Antarctica will come first. Later dates are July 7, 14, 21 and 28, and August 4 and 11, all at 7:00 p.m. on Riderwood TV Channel 972. We’d like to welcome the newest Riderwood residents to our community.

By Chris TaydusEditor-in-Chief and Riderwood TV Manager

For the last seven weeks, the Riderwood Community Resources team has brought our residents together to create moments of fun and joy in this time of social distancing. Community Resources Lead Coordinator Amy Hahn and Resident Life Manager Fiona Divecha have hosted some outstanding events over the last month and a half. Activities have included charades, a tea party, a dance party, a docent-led museum tour, a drum circle, and a celebration of the Beatles, all the time virtually bringing our residents together while they stay safe in their apartments.

Now, in honor of Independence Day, the virtual social hour on Thursday, July 2, at 2:00 p.m. will feature an intriguing presentation entitled “When is Our Nation’s Birthday: A Whimsical Examination of Different Dates in American History That Qualify as Our Birthday.” The discussion will be led by David Lassman, a National Park Ranger from the Thomas Stone National Historic Site (Stone was one of Maryland’s signers of the Declaration of Independence). Celebrate Independence Day by learning more about American history with this fascinating presentation and question & answer session just two days before Independence Day.

After the “When is Our Nation’s Birthday?” presentation on July 2, be sure to tune in for some additional events throughout July celebrating our nation’s history. On Thursday, July 9, the National Parks service returns (virtually) to highlight the

natural beauty and uniqueness of one of the largest National Parks in the United States with a “Wonders of Yellowstone” presentation with Park Ranger Matt Ohlen.

Later, on July 16 will feature a virtual tour of Sweet Farm in Half Moon Bay, California. Then, resident Rhoda Sumner will lead a virtual tour of the presidential portraits in the National Portrait Gallery on July 23. The month concludes on July 30 with a history lesson about and tour of Antietam Battlefield.

All of these events will take place on Thursday afternoons at 2:00 p.m. online using Zoom video conferencing. Information on joining the presentations can be found below or under both the “Activities” and “Resident Resources” sections on the MyErickson app. Select Virtual Social Hour events, including this week’s “When is Our Nation’s Birthday” presentation, will also be broadcast on Riderwood TV Channel 972. This week’s presentation will be simulcast live Thursday at 2:00 p.m. on Channel 972 (you must be on zoom to ask questions). The show will be rebroadcast on Friday at 2:00 p.m. then on Saturday at 8:30 a.m., 11:00 a.m., 5:00 p.m., and 10:30 p.m. Check the TV Guide each week to find out when the presentations will be on Riderwood TV Channel 972.
