Arranging a photo session with Arthur is as easy as pointing andclicking a camera. Kids love to meet their favorite aardvark and havetheir picture taken with him. (See page 18 for the costume reservationform.) You will have very long lines of parents and children waiting to meet _

Arthur, so if you take the pictures (instead of letting parents use their own cameras),the lines will move faster. To minimize frustration, advise parents of the approximate waitingtime. Select an appropriate time to end the line so that all families waiting in line get a photo.Be sure to have plenty of film and several instant cameras on hand.

Cr

O Plan your event at least three months in advance in order to secure the Arthur costume throughyour local public television station.

O In addition to the Arthur appearance, always have a couple of activities set up for families waitingin line. You can keep kids entertained by showing ARTHUR episodes on a video monitor placed nextto the line.

0 As appealing as Arthur is, infants and toddlers may be overwhelmed by his size. Ask parents not toinsist that their child meet Arthur.

O We encourage you not to charge for photos, so that they are available to everyone.

O Regrettably, Arthur cannot sign autographs.

TRzyThis

et up several different "ports" at your ARTHURevent (coloring tables, story corner, writing area, photo area, etc.). When kids enter, give them a

"passport," which will be stamped at each port. When kidsget all the stamps, they can turn in their passport withtheir name and address for a raffle drawing. Give awayprizes such as Arthur books, Arthur dolls, or a trip to alocal event such as the circus, a museum exhibit, or a play.(ARTHUR stamps are available from Demco. See themerchandise list on page 20.)

An ARTHUR club offers opportunities for kids to share ideas, be creative, make friends, and of course, have fun. A visit from Arthur himself (see the costume reservation form on page 08) is an exciting wayto start off your club. These clubs work particularly well in a library, school, or community center.Try hosting a weekly or biweekly get-together, and be sure to provide light refreshments such as juiceand crackers.

A contest is a fun way to reach different groups in your community. The contest will be a positive experience for every child if he or shereceives a certificate or small prize for entering.

@wgbh.org Rezdy, Set, WetevoHold a local story-writing contest in which

children write their own ARTHUR stories. Childrencan draw a border for their story cover and hide the names oftheir family in their drawings, as Marc Brown does. Use theStory Writing with Arthur guide (see page 16) for more ideas.Display the stories at a library or publish them in a local paper.

Poetry NotIonYou can hold a poetry contest, like the one Arthur and hisfriends enter in "I'm a Poet." Ask children to create differentkinds of poetry, such as haiku, sonnets, or rap. You may wantto give certificates to all who enter, and select a few poemsfor an honorable mention. At a party for the entrants, children can read their poems aloud. Invite a local poet toread his or her poetry too.

preferable to choosingwinners.

o If the children's ages vary,be sure to have differentage or grade categories forthe participants.

Who can spell "vomitrocious"? Hold a spelling bee inwhich children spell out words from the Arthur books. Tryorganizing kids into teams and having them use music andmovement to spell out words, as Arthur does in "Arthur'sSpelling Trubble." Give kids as much encouragement as theyneed in order to spell the word correctly.

are sequenced so that children, workingindividually and in small groups, learn aboutcharacter, story structure, illustration, andproblem solving before putting their ideas intostorylines.
