Introduction

In 2014 domestic exports increased by 2,3% and total imports by 6,3%. A decrease in re-

exports of 20,6% also resulted in a deterioration in the trade balance which reached - €3,7

billion from - €3,2 billion in 2013.

Data for 2014 are provisional

After a three year downward trend, there was an increase in total imports reaching €5,1

billion in 2014. There was an upward trend in domestic exports in the last 5 years reaching

€0,7 billion in 2014. Re-exports had also been exhibiting an upward trend in the last few

years until last year when re exports dropped to €0,7 billion from €0,9 billion in 2013.

Domestic Exports

Medicine has been the

leading export category

in the last years, with a

share of 28% in 2014,

followed by cheese and

curd including Halloumi

cheese (12%), gold (7%),

cement (6%), potatoes

(6%), electrical

appliances for telephony

(3%) and ferrous waste and scrap of iron or steel (3%). For more information see Annex I.

EU was Cyprus’ main export destination with a

47% share in total domestic exports. Almost

42% accounted for total domestic exports

with destination the UK (+17%), Israel (+53%),

Greece (-19%), China (+26) and Italy (-10%).

See Annex IV for more information.

In 2014 domestic exports of medicine increased by 2% to €205 million. China was the

leading destination of medicine exports with a share of 15%. Domestic exports of cheese

and curd increased by 18% to €90 million and were mainly directed to the UK (38%),

Sweden (13%), Germany (9%) and Australia (8%). Exports of gold increased by 40% to €48

million and were mainly directed to the UK (97%). Potatoes decreased by 23% to €41 million

and were mainly exported to Greece (25%), UK (22%) and Germany (15%). Electrical

appliances for telephony increased by 54% to €26 million and were mainly exported to Israel

(63%). Ferrous waste and scrap exports decreased by 24% to €21 million and directed

mainly to Greece (80%). China (16%) and HK (10%) were the leading destinations of the

exports of vegetable and fruit juices which increased by 15% to €21 million in 2014.

Total Imports

In 2014 total imports increased

by 6,3% to €5,1 billion and

consisted mainly of mineral

fuels and oils (€1,3b, 25%),

electrical machinery and

appliances together with

mechanical appliances and

engines (€0,5b, 10%), vehicles

and ships and boats (€0,4b,

9%), pharmaceuticals (€0,2b, 4%) and beverages and spirits (€0,1b, 2%). For more

information see Annex II.

EU was Cyprus main supplier in 2014 with

a 70,5% share of total imports. 54% of

total imports originated in Greece (+8%),

Israel (-25%), the UK (+20%) Italy (+8%)

and Germany (+13%). See Annex IV for

more information.

Total imports of mineral fuels and minerals originated primarily from Israel (35%), Greece

(29%) and UK (12%). Imports of electrical machinery and appliances originated mainly in

Greece (29%), Germany (12%), UK (9%) and China (11%). Engines, machines and boilers

originated mainly in Greece (17%), Germany (14%), Italy (14%), China (11%) and Holland

(11%). Vehicles were imported mainly from UK (29%), Germany (27%), Japan (9%), Spain

(5%), Belgium, (5%), France (4%) and Italy (4%). Ships and boats were mainly supplied by the

Cayman Islands (86%). Pharmaceutical products were mainly supplied by Greece (34%),

Switzerland (10%), Germany (10%) and Holland (7%).

Re – Exports

There was a sharp decrease of

21% to €0,7 billion in re exports in

2014 in relation to 2013. Re-

exports constituted mainly of

minerals and fuels for ships and

airplanes (€0,2b, -5%), electrical

machinery and appliances (€0,1b,

+46%), and organic chemicals (€0,05b, -39%). See Annex III for more information.

Re exports were directed mainly to stores and provisions for ships and airplanes

(34%, -12%), Greece (23%, -18%), USA (5%, -26%), UK (3%, -81%) and Lebanon (3%, +1%).

For more information see Annex IV. In 2014, the split between mineral fuels (re exported)

supplied to airplanes and ships

was 70% and 30% for EU and

Third Countries respectively.

Electrical machinery and

appliances were mainly re

exported to Greece (34%), USA

(24%), Slovakia (13%) and Brazil

(11%). Organic chemicals were

mainly re exported to Greece

(98%). Tobacco was mainly re exported to Lebanon (28%), UAE (21%), countries not

specified by the Cyprus Statistical Department (13%), Switzerland (5%), Jordan (4%) and

Greece (4%). Vehicles were mainly re exported to UK (27%), UAE (13%), Thailand (13%),

Singapore (8%), HK (5%) and Egypt (5%). Cine, optical photo and measuring equipment were

mainly re exported to Greece (29%), HK (13%), Germany (10%), stores and provisions for

airplanes and ships with destination the Third Countries (8%), and UK (7%).
