Between January 1990 and May 2010, 8,448 Colombians were victims of these devices. Although during the first five months of 2010 a reduction of 15% in the number of affected people is evidenced (compared to the same period in 2009,) the affectation continues to be considerable.

The implementation of these platoons was possible thanks to the work of the OAS and the support of the USA, Canada, Spain, Italy and Norway. Currently, Colombia is implementing an LIS pilot study with the collaboration of the European Union and, in the near future, the country will be implementing mechanical demining labours thanks to the support provided by Japan.
