ORDER OF SERVICE

¶Stand at the entry of the Choir and Clergy

The INTROIT – KYRIE is sung:

Requiem aeternam dona eis Domine: et lux perpetua luceat eis. Te decet hymnus, Deus in Sion: et tibi reddetur votum in Jerusalem; exaudi orationem meam, ad te omnis caro veniet. Kyrie eleison. Christe eleison.

Rest eternal grant them, Lord, and let light perpetual shine upon them. You are owed a hymn, O God, in Zion and to you shall the vow be performed in

Jerusalem, hear my prayer, to you shall all flesh come. Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy.

GREETING

President Grace, mercy and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you, All and also with you.

The CONFESSION ¶Remain Standing

Assistant Let us confess to God the sins and shortcomings of the world; its pride, its selfishness, its greed; its evil divisions and hatreds. Let us confess our share in what is wrong, and our failure to seek and establish that peace which God wills for his children.

All Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we have sinned against you and against our neighbour, in thought and word and deed, through negligence, through weakness, through our own deliberate fault. We are truly sorry, and repent of all our sins. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, who died for us, forgive us all that is past; and grant that we may serve you in newness of life to the glory of your name. Amen.

The President says the ABSOLUTION: President Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in life eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord. All Amen.

The COLLECT

Almighty Father, whose will is to restore all things in your beloved Son, the King of all: govern the hearts and minds of those in authority, and bring the families of the nations, divided and torn apart by the ravages of sin, to be subject to his just and gentle rule; who is alive and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end.

The EPISTLE Hebrews 9 vv. 24–end ¶Sit Read by Professor Simon Conway Morris

Christ did not enter a sanctuary made by human hands, a mere copy of the true one, but he entered into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf. Nor was it to offer himself again and again, as the high priest enters the Holy Place year after year with blood that is not his own; for then he would have had to suffer again and again since the foundation of the world. But as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the age to remove sin by the sacrifice of himself. And just as it is appointed for mortals to die once, and after that the judgement, so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin, but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.

For the word of the Lord All Thanks be to God

The GRADUAL PSALM Psalm 130 is sung: 1. Out of the deep have I called unto thee, O Lord : Lord, hear my voice. 2. O let thine ears consider well : the voice of my complaint. 3. If thou, Lord, wilt be extreme to mark what is done amiss : O Lord, who

may abide it? 4. For there is mercy with thee : therefore shalt thou be feared. 5. I look for the Lord; my soul doth wait for him : in his word is my trust. 6. My soul fleeth unto the Lord : before the morning watch, I say, before the

morning watch. 7. O Israel, trust in the Lord, for with the Lord there is mercy : and with him

is plenteous redemption. 8. And he shall redeem Israel : from all his sins.

The GOSPEL John 15 vv. 9–17 ¶Stand

Please stand as the Gospel Procession moves from the Chancel.

The GOSPEL is announced:

Jesus said to his disciples. ‘As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete. ‘This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father. You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name. I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another’.

Amen. O Lord Jesus Christ, King of glory, deliver the souls from the pains of hell and from the deep waters. O Lord Jesus Christ, King of glory, deliver the souls from the mouth of the lion; let hell not swallow them, O Lord Jesus Christ, King of glory, Jesus Christ let them not fall into darkness: Sacrifices and prayers of praise we offer you, O Lord; accept them for those souls whom we commemorate today. Make them pass, O Lord, from death to life. Which of old you promised to Abraham and his seed. O Lord Jesus Christ, King of glory, deliver the souls from the pains of hell and from the deep waters: let them not fall into darkness. Amen.

The PRAYER OF CONSECRATION ¶Stand

President Father, we give you thanks and praise through your beloved Son Jesus Christ, your living Word, through whom you have created all things; who was sent by you in your great goodness to be our Saviour.

By the power of the Holy Spirit he took flesh; as your Son, born of the blessed Virgin, he lived on earth and went about among us; he opened wide his arms for us on the cross; he put an end to death by dying for us; and revealed the resurrection by rising to new life; so he fulfilled your will and won for you a holy people.

Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and saying:

Page 11: Requiem æternam dona eis, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat · PDF file¶Stand at the entry of the Choir and Clergy The INTROIT – KYRIE is sung: ... O Domine Jesu Christe, Rex gloriae,

The SANCTUS is sung:

Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Pleni sunt coeli et terra gloria tua. Hosanna in excelsis.

Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of hosts, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest.

¶Kneel or sit

President Lord, you are holy indeed, the source of all holiness; grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit, and according to your holy will, these gifts of bread and wine may be to us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, In remembrance of me.

Page 12: Requiem æternam dona eis, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat · PDF file¶Stand at the entry of the Choir and Clergy The INTROIT – KYRIE is sung: ... O Domine Jesu Christe, Rex gloriae,

President And so, Father, calling to mind his death on the cross, his perfect sacrifice made once for the sins of the whole world; rejoicing in his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming in glory, we celebrate this memorial of our redemption. As we offer you this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, we bring before you this bread and this cup and we thank you for counting us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you.

Send the Holy Spirit on your people and gather into one in your kingdom all who share this one bread and one cup, so that we, in the company of St John the Evangelist and all the saints, may praise and glorify you for ever, through Jesus Christ our Lord; by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever.

President As our Saviour has taught us, we are bold to say: All Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The President breaks the consecrated bread. President We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. All Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread. The PIE JESU is sung: ¶Remain kneeling or seated

Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat eis Libera me, Domine, de morte aeterna, in die illa tremenda, quando coeli movendi sunt et terra: Dum veneris judicare saeculum per ignem.

Deliver me, O Lord, from eternal death, on that fearful day when heaven and earth will be shaken and you will come to judge the world by fire. Trembling seizes me and fear at the advent of judgement and the wrath to come. That day of wrath, destruction and misery is a great and awful day. Rest eternal grant them, Lord, and let light perpetual shine upon them. Deliver me, O Lord, from eternal death, on that fearful day when heaven and earth will be shaken and you will come to judge the world by fire.

The POST-COMMUNION PRAYER ¶Kneel or sit All Father of all, we give you thanks and praise, that when we were still far off you met us in your Son and brought us home. Dying and living, he declared your love, gave us grace, and opened the gate of glory. May we who share Christ's body live his risen life; we who drink his cup bring life to others; we whom the Spirit lights give light to the world. Keep us firm in the hope you have set before us, so we and all your children shall be free, and the whole earth live to praise your name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The BLESSING ¶Stand President God grant to the living grace, to the departed rest,

The retiring collection will be in aid of the work of the Help for Heroes

The Royal British Legion is the UK’s leading charity providing financial, social and emotional support to millions who have served and are currently serving in the Armed Forces, and their dependants. Currently, nearly 11 million people are eligible for our support and we receive around 300,000 calls for help every year.

The Legion was founded in 1921 as a voice for the ex-Service community and our 550,000 members continue to ensure that this voice does not go unheard. Although the needs of ex-Service people have changed over the years, we are still there to safeguard their welfare, interests and memory. British service people are in action around the world every day of the year. They know that if they need our support - now or in the future - the Legion is always on active duty for them.
