Transparency of worldwide animal disease

situation

o One of the main missions of the OIE is to ensure transparency of worldwide animal disease situation

o Legal obligation for all Member Countries to report to the OIE

o OIE List of notifiable diseases

o Includes 19 diseases of relevance to equids

Notifiability and surveillanceBased on WAHIS’ records

▪ Notifiability

o None of the OIE listed disease of relevance to equids is notifiable in

all of the 13 target countries.

o Four (4) of the 13 target countries have reported all the 19 diseases

of relevance to equids as notifiable to the OIE.

Notifiability and surveillanceBased on WAHIS’ records

▪ Surveillance

o None of the OIE listed disease of relevance to equids are under

surveillance in domestic populations in all of the 13 target.

o Only one country has reported all the 19 OIE listed diseases of

relevance to equids as under surveillance in equids domestic

populations.

Conclusion

▪ 19 OIE listed of relevance to equids

o Two diseases is reported as absent in the 13 countries

o 11 diseases are reported present in at least one of 11 target countries reviewed.

Priorities:

o Disease notifiability and surveillance

o Transparency in international disease reporting

▪ Knowledge of the disease situation is key to define relevant healthrequirements for horse movement.
