REQUIREMENTS TO COMPLETE THE HISTORY MAJOR 39 TOTAL CREDITS Name of Student: Current Date: General Guidelines: Only grades of “C” or higher will count toward the History Major, except HIST 391: Internship in History, which is a Pass/Fail course. Students may apply 3 credits of HIST 391 toward the History Major if they earn a “P.” For a list of Geographic Designation for History Courses, see HistGeoDesignate.pdf. Students may apply a maximum of 6 credits from Advanced Placement (AP) exams toward the History Major Lower-Level Courses. Students who receive scores of 4 or 5 on an AP History Examination will receive 3 credits applied toward a History Major Lower-Level Course: AP US History=HIST 101, AP European History=HIST 110 AP World History=HIST 200. Academic Major: Must complete requirements for a Major Program.

Academic Credits: At least 120 Credits Overall.

At least 45 Credits numbered 300 and above.

Grade Point Average: At least 2.0.

Residency: At least 30 Credits earned at UMBC.

At least 15 Upper-Level Credits earned at UMBC.

Transfer Credits: Maximum of 60 Credits from Community Colleges.

Maximum of 90 Credits from all sources. NOTE: All History majors receive credit for a Writing Intensive class by completing Historical Research (HIST 496 or 497).

General Guidelines: • Only grades of “C” or higher count toward the General Education Program (GEP); Pass/Fail courses will not count.• No one course may satisfy more than one GEP area; a course may count for C or SS, for instance, but not both.• Crosslisted courses may be considered as coming from any of their disciplines.• No more than three courses from one discipline may be used to satisfy the GEP, except ENGL, which may have

three courses in addition to the English Composition requirement.• AP, IP, and CLEP exams may fulfill GEP requirements if they have UMBC GEP equivalents; departmental credit-

by-exam will not fulfill GEP requirements.• Only one studio or performance course may count toward GEP requirements.• Only one First-Year Seminar course may count toward GEP requirements.
