Abstract

The facsimile of only one copper plate was published in a very brief article in the Itihāsa

Patrikā titled ‘Panvel Plates of Chittarāja (Śaka year 947)’ by Dr. Ravindra Ramdas. These copper

plates were handed over to him by Pandit Gajanan Shastri Joshi of Panvel on 16th October 1983. Dr.

Ramdas revealed in a conversation that there were three plates, loose without the seal strung around

and much effaced. He however selected only this plate to be photographed as it contained most

relevant information, according to him. He is silent about any other details such as their physical

dimensions, script and language used and other customary details. Unfortunately neither the original

copper plates nor any photo images are traceable anymore except the present photocopied image.

A brief note of these plates was taken by Shri. Shashikant Dhopate in his article published in

‘Kalakaustubh’ I have deciphered the only available facsimile and analyzed its contents.

Key Words: Śilāhāra, King Chittarāja, Inscriptions, Panvel

The Find

The facsimile of only one copper plate was published in a very brief article in the Itihāsa

Patrikā titled ‘Panvel Plates of Chittarāja (Śaka year 947)’ by Dr. Ravindra Ramdas.1 These copper

plates were handed over to him by Pandit Gajanan Shastri Joshi of Panvel on 16th October 1983. Dr.

Ramdas revealed in a conversation with the author that there were three plates, loose without the seal

strung around and much effaced. He however selected only this plate to be photographed as it

contained most relevant information, according to him. He is silent about any other details such as

their physical dimensions, script and language used and other customary details. Unfortunately neither

the original copper plates nor any photo images are traceable anymore except the present photocopied

image.

A brief note of these plates was given by Shri Shashikant Dhopate in his article published in

‘Kalakaustubh2’

So the present Copper plate has been evaluated with the help of the only available facsimile.

The Plate

Dr. Ramdas, after narrating some general information about the house of the Śilāhāras of

North Konkan, provided only one line information about the grant as under, ‘The Copper Plates note

the grant on the occasion of the Solar Eclipse on Śaka 947 Kārtika Vadya 15. According to Pillai

Ephemeris it corresponds to 23rd November 1025 A.D.’ Twenty two lines are inscribed on the present

plate. The characters are of the Nāgarī alphabet and resemble those of the copper-plate grants of the

early Śilāhāra kings. The language is Sanskrit.

The Object

Records the grant of a village Disalāṅa Grāma in Pāṇāḍaviṣaya by the Śilāhāra King

Chittarāja to the learned Brāhmaṇa (parama brahmaṇa) (Vidyāvibhu)paiya, son of

Viśvagovindamaiya of Kāsyapa Gotra and (ba)hvṛca branch. (Vidyāvibhu)paiya journeyed from

the city of Karahāṭaka alias Karhāḍa (probably to Thane, being the capital of the Śilāhāra) to receive

the aforementioned grant.

The Purpose of the Grant:

This grant was meant to provide for the performance of the six religious duties such as

sacrificing for oneself and for others and the studying and teaching of the sacred texts, for the

performance of balī, carū and other obligatory and occasional religious rites by the donee and for the

maintenance of his family.

(Vidyāvibhu) paiya, the donee is also addressed as the bhānḍāgārikadhipa. This shows that

the Treasury Officer (bhānḍāgārikadhipa) in service of the king received a grant for the performance

of the priestly duties. The Khārepāṭaṇa Copper Plates of King Anantadeva3 (Śaka year 1016) offer

only other similar instance, where Mahāpradhāna Bhāmaṇa Śreṣṭhī and Mahāsandhīvigrahaka

Dhaṇāma Śreṣṭhī, two very high profile state officials and flourishing traders from Balīpattana, were

granted exemption from the custom dues.

Dr. Ramdas has provided for the photograph of only one plate, so the name of the Śilāhāra

king does not appear anywhere. The earliest known date of the reign of Chittarāja is Śaka year 941

(Kalyāṇa Copper Plates). Thus it can be certainly ascertained that the donor of the present grant was

King Chittarāja. The customary verses regarding the technicalities of the donation are exactly as they

appear in his and other Śilāhāra records. The use of pṛṣṭhamātrā and the character ‘ī' adequately prove

the plate’s antiquity.

Certain parts of the line 12 and 13 have been either effaced completely or not engraved at all.

A flower symbol suggests that some additions were to be made. Such symbol is observed in the

Laṭṭalāpūra Grant of Kānharadeva (Śaka year 941)4. This symbol is seen between line 9 and 10 to

insert some content. However unlike the Laṭṭalāpūra Grant, the reasons for the blank space remain

unknown. The details of the boundaries of the donated village are lost.

Officers of Chittarāja

Though we have lost access to understand the ministers recorded in the present grant, we can

very well guess some of them. The following chart recording the officers known from various grants

of King Chittarāja clearly states that Joūpaiya has written all the available records from Śaka era 941

– 956. Nāgaṇaiya also served King Chittarāja in various capacities such as Sarvādhikārī and

Mahāmātya with effect from Śaka era 946- 956.

Chittarāja, the issuer of largest number of Copper Plate Grants

apart from the Kalyāṇa (śaka 941), Bhoīghara (śaka 946), Panavela (śaka 947), Bhānḍūpa (śaka 948),

Dive Āgara (śaka 949), Berlin (śaka 956) and Cincaṇī (śaka 956) grants. This makes Chittarāja, the

issuer of largest number of Copper Plate Grants from the house of Śilāhāra Of North Kokaṇa.

Acknowledgement

Due to the invaluable inputs of my teacher Shri Shashikant Dhopate I was able to successfully

decipher this copper plate.
