At the end of this Module, the learners should be to able to:• Identify the characteristics and qualities of a teacher as a research professional;•Discuss concepts about research and the different research methods applicable in education; and•Conduct simple research activity following the scientific methods of research in relation to one’s field of specialization.

IntroductionThe role of a teacher in the 21st

century is different from what it was 10 or many years ago. The teacher is challenges not only in the area of instruction but in field relevant to instruction such as research, extension and publication.

Characteristics and Qualities of a Teacher as a Researching

Professional Characteristics•Verify ideas and practices believed to be effective.•Discover new ideas and practices that are exemplified by an idea.•Clarify ideas that are designated to simplify teaching.•Discover ideas and practices that are counter- intuitive.

Research Concepts Definition of Research

• Systematic, controlled, empirical and critical investigation of hypothetical propositions..(Kerlinger 1972)• A purposive, systematic and scientific process of

gathering, analyzing, classifying, organizing, presenting and interpreting data.( Calderon and Gonzales, 1993)• Process of gathering data or information to solve a

particular/ scientific problem. (Halpin, 1996)• Collection of data in a rigorously controlled situation for

prediction or explanation. (Quinton, 2006)

Research Concepts Types of Research

According to purpose:• Predictive/ Prognostic Research- future operation of

the variables.•Directive research- what should be done the findings to

remedy a certain condition.• Illuminative research- interaction of the components of

the variables being investigated.

Research Concepts According to Goal:

•Basic/Pure Research- development of theories and

principles•Applied Research- testing the efficacy of theories

and principles.

Page 11: Research Exposure: A Teacher’s Edge in the 21st Century

Research Concepts According the level of investigation:

Exploratory Research- discovery and generating theory

Descriptive Research- prevailing conditions,

processes, cause and effect

relationships Experimental Research- effects of the variables on

each other

Page 12: Research Exposure: A Teacher’s Edge in the 21st Century

Research ConceptsAccording to choice of answers

to problems:

Evaluation Research- possible actions are identified and

used as bases in making

decisionsDevelopmental Research- finding/developing suitable

system or process.

Page 13: Research Exposure: A Teacher’s Edge in the 21st Century

Research ConceptsAccording to Statistical Content:

Quantitative- used of statistical or inferential statistics

to determine the results.Qualitative- data are analyzed rationally not

statistically.

Page 14: Research Exposure: A Teacher’s Edge in the 21st Century

Research ConceptsAccording to Time Element:

Historical Research- whole truth of past eventsDescriptive Research- present conditions and understand nature, characteristics, components and aspects of phenomenon.Experimental Research- cause and effect relationship

Research Concepts Research Process

Steps:1. Problem Identification- choice of the researcher based on the

researcher’s interest, current issues, moral or legal impediments.2. Literature Review- concepts or theoretical frameworks of the planned

research.3. Research Design- procedure of planning and carrying out the research.4. Data Collection- method of gathering data to provide information.5. Data presentation, analysis and interpretation- manner of organizing,

collecting and analyzing/interpreting data.6. Formulation of implications and conclusions -brief statements based on

the findings of the study.
