Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) invests in academic

researchers and research teams who are most likely to

generate new knowledge, leading edge technologies and

competitive enterprises in the fields of science and

engineering underpinning three broad areas:

• Biotechnology (BIO)

• Information and communications technology (ICT)

• Sustainable energy and energy-efficient technologies

(ENERGY)

Centre Title Irish Photonic Integration Centre (IPIC)

Director Prof Paul Townsend

Lead Institution Tyndall National Institute, UCC

Research Programme Description

Photonics is the use of light to obtain, convey or process information. It is an

underlying technology of worldwide telecommunications networks, and is used

increasingly in biomedical applications where light has to be easily delivered to

biological samples. The expertise within IPIC builds upon the research carried

out previously in the SFI funded photonics systems research group, photonics

packaging research cluster (PIFAS) and biomedical diagnostics institute (BDI).

IPIC will address the grand challenge of Photonic Integration, which the team

equates to the grand challenge of electronic integration in the 1960s. They will

develop novel integrated photonic component technologies addressing unmet

needs in the fields of communications and biomedicine.

Communications

Development of integrated photonic component technologies for short reach

optical interconnects and wide area networks

Biomedical

• Photonic Integration for Point-of-Care Diagnostics

• Photonic Device and System Integration Strategies

• Photonic Integration for Cell and Tissue Analysis.
