The non diegetic music and gospel singing at the beginning brings us into

the film it fits well with the clouds but also sounds a little eerie and we

are not given any real leads as to why we are in the sky and hearing

the music… it begging's “operator…” the non- diegetic the sound of

the surroundings as the CGI sequence takes us through clouds have

been enhanced to give a colder and more intense feel.

What we see on the screen starts of fairly bright moving through greyclouds, but we are fast to be plunged into the dark black vast

unknowns of space. this leaves us isolated and alone only left with the

gospel singing “give me…. Information”. We are left to think of what

importance could this non diegetic sound be to the film itself, the

audience is purposely left with minimal information, until the story

unveils itself. This creates great suspense and tension… reluctant in

the genre of thrillers.

We are shown a master shot here of earth making the characters of thefilm appear small and insignificantin relation to their home/surroundings, and whoever or what ever may be looking at them.

As the sate little is used in manycommunications such as themobile phone, it could suggest theentire planets vulnerability to thepower of telecommunication or inthis case, just the phone.

Satellite with the reflection of the planet

Earth, makes a diegetic sounds as it

swoosh’s past us and takes our

attention onto its self, insisting upon

the importance of communication and

information as well as its significance

to the rest of the film. It may intend tomake an ACTIVE audience feel as if

the planet is vulnerable to this satellite

and what it symbolises.

communication. However for the less

demanding viewer it may just be

perceived as minimal information, as if

its purpose were to make us think of

why this has been shown. Thuscreating further suspense.

Nearly everyone on the screen is using mobiles in the

centre of the mid shot is a man on a phone. Not only is this

very suggestive about cellular devices, but also the mid-

shot allows for good viewing of the surroundings and the

area in which the film is set. It could also show our

vulnerability towards the mobile phone, and this could be

shown throughout the film.

Mise-en-scene… the non-diegetic sound (music)

changes to diegetic sound here as we are

introduced to the singers in the street singing they

immediately fit the music and link outer space part

of the opening with what is happening on the

ground. Also in this clip we are shown different

races as well as social classes, the black man in

the shown by the red arrow and the man in thecentre of the picture in the shirt and tie, it is clear

to the audience that the two are of different

ethnicities, and their clothing suggests a contrast

in class. I believe the two different classes have

been positioned in this shot to show that the

superiority of telecommunication stretches further

than just one race or class, that it is superior over

all.

Here is an establishing shot of New York and was probably shot using a crane shot

where the camera is mounted on the end of a crane. This shot is used to set the

scene within New York where the story will take place, the effect of this I believe is

to show the town’s busyness, we see very clearly on both sides of the street many

buildings showing advertisements and technology, I believe the purpose of this is to

show the people of New York as inferior to these aspects of society, something

which is shown throughout the course of the film.

Close ups are used frequently to

suggest significance to key

aspects such as money, games,

and telecommunications

especially, as a group we believe

the point if picked up by an activeaudience would be to make that

audience notice the amount of

telecommunication going on as

well as the amount of mobile

phones shown in the montage,

and ask why the use of them is

relevant, perhaps to the title of

the film, or to the story itself

Here the editorial use of jump cuts shows these two people playing around ‘dancing’ and

also switching places but not permanently this may in some bring up feeling towardroles, the two men dancing in the street are putting on a “show” or “performance”usually in this kind of scenario the two people try to better each other for entertainment, a sense of self respect, and to teach others at the same timesomething which is similar to the battle between the protagonist and the antagonistthroughout the storyline, perhaps this is purposely referring to the events that willoccur within the film.

The close up shot of the gun print on the t-shirt suggests a threatening, aggressive and violent feel to theopening even though it is subtle itcreates a sense of danger. This likethe use of telecommunication and

props such as phones, could also be areference to what happens within thefilm throughout “duck” could havereferences to the story as well as thegun as ducking is an action carried outwhen in danger, and the maincharacter “Stu” (Stuart) experiences

this nearly throughout the entire film .

Sound and visual editing are put togreat use in this scene where signaland interference sounds ensue ,andthe man with the basket ball’smovement is speed up considerably as

though he were being “controlled”. Indoing this his facial expressions alsochange frantically hinting at emotionaltendencies and abnormality as hisexpressions are quite odd…

Mise-en-scene in here shows us a women talking on a pinkphone and wearing glasses that have a heart on them. This is very feminine and could be a subconscious hinttoward relations in due course of the film.

Depth of field is used a lot in the opening sequence. Thiscould suggest being watched and create feeling thatwe are not getting the full picture and are oftenunaware of are surroundings something which isreferred to within the battle between the protagonistand the antagonist later on within the film as theprotagonist “Stu” and the other characters such as the

police unaware of the killer throughout the entire film.

In the centre of the shot once the focus has narrowed downinto the background we can make out two policemenone of which is evidently as u can see in the shot onhis cell phone… they are not in the shot by chance.

And may have been placed to give some sense of authority to the opening and maintain a sense of order but as we see they are over whelmed by passers bywho block us from seeing them in full view/clearly thiscould state that police are held by a barrier which is of great importance later in the film.
