G Eaton was awarded the 1914-15 star campaign medal of the
British Empire for his service in World War One.
This Star is identical to the 1914 Star in every respect except
that the centre scroll bears the dates “1914- 15” and the two
small scrolls bearing “Aug” and “Nov” are omitted.
As G Eaton was a recipient of this medal he also received the
British War Medal and Victory Medal, as it was not awarded
singularly. These three medals were sometimes irreverently
referred to as Pip, Squeak and Wilfred. With Pip representing
either this medal or the 1914 Star, only one of which could
be awarded to a soldier, Squeak represented the British War Medal
and Wilfred represented the Victory Medal.

The local newspaper report about the marriage of Lance
Corporal William Henry Green and Miss Fanny Amy Newell
Marriage.- A typical war wedding was solemnized in St.
Lukes church, Maidenhead, on Sunday last, when the
contracting parties were Lce.- Corpl. Wm Henry Green, of
the 8th Batt. Royal Fusiliers and Miss Fanny Amy Newell,
daughter of Mr. F. Newell , postmaster and confectioner
and Mrs. Newell. The wedding was a quiet one, as the
bridegroom had only just arrived from the Front on 6 days’
special leave, he having been in France ten months. The
officiating clergyman was the Vicar, Rev. C.E.M. Fry. The
bride looked charming in a white crepe onduile dress, and
also wore an old Brussels lace veil, kindly lent by Mrs. L.
Buchanan. She carried a bouquet of white carnations and
wore a diamond brooch, the gift of the bridegroom. She
was attended by two bridesmaids-Miss Elsie Newell (sister)
and Miss Essie Dunkley (cousin), who were attired in blue
crepe ondulle dresses, black hats and carried bouquets of
pink carnations and wore gold brooches, both the gifts of
the bridegroom. The bride and bridegroom left later in the
day for Westminster to a flat kindly lent by the bridegroom’s sister. The presents were both numerous and useful. The
bridegroom comes from a soldier’s family, three of them having already been decorated for bravery on the battlefield.
William Henry Green died 3 months later at the Battle of the Somme 8.7.16 A member of his family has told me that
he lived in Westborough Road, Maidenhead, which explains why he is on the Board at All Saints Church, with the
wrong initials on the original board. His name is recorded on Pier and Face 8 C of the Thiepval Memorial on this Panel
at the front. Due to scaffolding blocking the way I was not able to go closer to take a clear photograph of his name,
but we read his name on this Memorial.

Gallantry Awards: Mentioned in Despatches
This is the lowest form of recognition that was announced. The Mention in
Despatches (M.I.D.) for a Soldier is not an award of a medal, but is a
commendation of an act of gallantry or service. C W Mason-MacFarlane’s
name would appear in the official report written by a Superior Officer and sent to the high command, in
which is described the Soldier's gallant or meritorious action in the face of the enemy. This despatch is
published in the London Gazette newspaper of the State, which has existed since 1665 and is still
published today.During World War One the citations published in the London Gazette did not usually give
details of the place and date of the action for which awarded for security reasons.
In 1920 the Army Order authorised the issue of an oak leaf emblem decoration to be pinned or sewn
diagonally on to the ‘Victory’ medal ribbon.

Terris Seymour
The WWI Board at All Saints Church records ‘Seymour J’, but there was no soldier of this name from
Maidenhead. However ‘Terris Seymour’ may be the man intended to be recorded here. The 1911 Census
shows that the handwriting of ‘T’ looks like a ‘J’ – hence this mistake was made if similar writing informed the
Church of his death, we can see how this error was made.

John William Shelton
First Name: John
Surname: Shelton
DOB: 1892
Age: 24 years
Nationality: British
Date of Death: 08 / 6 / 1916 John died in the district of St George, Hanover Square, London in June 1916. It is
possible that he was in a Military Hospital at the time. His father wrote to the Army after his death in
June 1916 stating that his son had died from heart failure as a result of the "shock" in the trenches
during 1915/16. John was probably suffering from shell shock. We honour this soldier from our
Parish who fought in the War until February 1916 and died as a result of his War Service.
All Saints
Boyne Hill
Maidenhead
John Shelton was listed on the Roll of Honour at All Saints Church. He was buried in the Churchyard at
All Saints, Boyne Hill on 12th June 1916. On the family grave is written: ‘In loving Memory of William
Benjamin Shelton died 11th August 1937 aged 73 ‘at rest’ and Lucy Anna his wife died 29th May
1949 aged 93 And John William Shelton Son of the above died 8th June 1916 aged 24’. He was not
given a CWGC grave because he was not in the Army at the time of his death. We honour this
soldier from our Parish who fought in the War until February 1916 and died as a result of his War
Service.
Information: Parents were William Benjamin and Lucy Anna Shelton. 1911 census has the family living in
44 Albert Street, Maidenhead. John worked, briefly, for the Great Western Railway from 1908 -1909 as
as a parcels clerk and then gained employment as a coal clerk, probably at Maidenhead Station. He
served with the Army from February 1911- February 1916. The 1st/4th Battalion landed in France
on 31/3/1915 and John would have been with them. In February the Battalion was in the trenches at
Hebuterne, Somme, in France and whilst it was a fairly quiet sector, it was cold, wet and miserable
and they had been there for 5 months under constant shelling. He was Honourably Discharged
22/2/1916 under Kings Regulations 392 He had served his term in the Army and allowed to go home.

The Board at All Saints Boyne Hill lists ‘Smith G.E.’ but there is no trace of a Maidenhead soldier with that name. I

and he should be remembered at The Parish Church of All Saints, Boyne Hill.

Acknowledgements
I am grateful for the help given to me by:
Neil Bryson – my husband for his support and encouragement through the many, many hours
that I have spent doing this Research. Also for his arranging and organising our trip to Ypres
and the Somme in September 2015 to find some of the graves of our Fallen from the First
World War and names on Memorials; when we found 5 graves and 40 names on Memorials.
Stephen Rolls – for the photographs of Soldiers and information about many of those in the
Royal Berkshire Regiment.
Hannah Sami – for the information, encouragement and support she gave me while she was
working for the For King and Country Project.
Sandra Kiely – for sending me information about the eleven First World War names that are
on Bray War Memorial as well as at All Saints Boyne Hill. Also for Sandra sending me the
photograph of Fred Allen’s grave at the CWGC Lyness Cemetery on The Isle of Hoy, Orkney
Islands that she visited and photographed in March 2015.
Michael Willoughby who is the WW1 archivist for Maidenhead County Boys School
(Desborough) – for the extra information he sent on many of our Fallen, including finding
‘George Edward Brown’ and sending me the Maidenhead link for the Walfords.
Soldiers billeted in the Parish in the First World War
During the War many soldiers were billeted in Maidenhead and in our Parish for training on
local farm land,1 at Clivedon and Maidenhead Thicket. Some of the Officers stayed in the
Parish of All Saints Boyne Hill at 239 Penyston Road. In December 1914 the Boyne Hill Institute
building was made available for the soldiers billeted at Boyne Hill. The February 1915 Parish
Magazine tells us that there were ‘three Parade Services each Sunday for the soldiers, and it is
an inspiring sight to see so many men gathered together for public worship.’
Lieutenant John Walton Bamber3 of the 10th Battalion of the Kings Own Yorkshire Light
Infantry was one of the Officers who worshipped at All Saints Church with his men, while they
were billeted in Maidenhead for training. John Bamber was born in Natal, South Africa. In 1914
he was studying at St Augustine’s missionary training College in Canterbury and when the
War started he joined the Army. Sadly he died with his men at Fricourt on 1st July 1916. The
crucifix over this pulpit was given in memory of him. We turn on the light over this crucifix
when we preach, reminding us that ‘we preach Christ crucified;’ (1 Cor 1:23) remembering that
Jesus died and rose again, showing us resurrection hope, God’s love in giving us forgiveness,
peace and the assurance of eternal life.
There is an information sheet about John Walton Bamber behind the pulpit and a Memorial
to him behind the Curate’s Stall to the right of the Lady Chapel. Here is a photograph of that
Memorial:
