Definitions and Meanings of

Research

1.Research in common parlance refers to a searchfor knowledge.

2. Research is actually a voyage of discovery.

3. Redman defined research as a systematizedeffort to gain new knowledge

4. Research is the pursuit of truth with the help ofstudy, observation , comparison and experiment.

5.Research is thus, an original contribution to theexisting stock of knowledge making for itsadvancement.

The research objective is to gain familiaritywith a phenomenon or to achieve newinsight into it.

The main aim of the research is to find outthe truth which is hidden and which hasnot been discovered yet.

To test a hypothesis of a causalrelationship between variables (hypothesistesting)

Descriptive research:-it includes surveys

and fact-finding enquiries of different kinds.

The major purpose of descriptive research

is description of the state of affairs as itexists at present. In social science and

business research we quite often use the

term EX-Post-Facto research fordescriptive research studies.

The main characteristic of this method is

that the researcher has no control over the

variables, he can only report what has

happened or what is happening. Most Ex-

Post-Facto research projects are used for

descriptive studies in which the researcher

seeks to measure such items as for e.g:-frequency of shopping, preferences of

people, or similar data.

Analytical Research

Analytical research:- on the other hand,

the researcher has to use facts or

information already available, and analyze

these to make a critical evaluation of the

subject or material

Applied Research:- it aims at finding a

solution for an immediate problem facing a

society or an industry

Basic Research

Fundamental or Basic research:- it is

mainly concerned with generalizations and

with the formulation of a theory.

Gathering knowledge for knowledges

sake is termed pure or basic research.

Quantitative research:-is based on the

measurement of quantity or amount. It is

applicable to phenomena that can be

expressed in terms of quantity.

Qualitative Research:-is concerned with

qualitative phenomenon, that involving

quality or kind.. For instance, when we are

interested in investigating the reasons forhuman behavior, we quite often talk of

Conceptual research is that related to

some abstract idea or theory. It is

generally used by philosophers and

thinkers to develop new concepts or toreinterpret existing ones.

Empirical Research:- relies on experience

based research, coming up withconclusions which are capable of being

verified by observation or experiment.

Research is For Prognosis (for the prediction of future.)

To understand the problems and plights of farmers, labors,small business people, consumers, students, political issues,defense forces, Space, Health, Social Reforms.

Approaches to Research

There are two types of approaches toresearch, i.e. quantitative approach andqualitative approach.

The Quantitative approach be furtherclassified into inferential, experimental,simulation approach to research.

Qualitative approach to research isconcerned with subjective assessment ofattitudes, opinions and behavior.

Thus, research is the fountain of

knowledge for the sake of knowledge and

an important source of providing
