Sara Shahbazi presented the study (Racial and Geographic Variation in Cataract Surgery) at the 8th International Symposium of Geospatial Health, GnosisGIS 2014 in New Orleans on October 31-November 2. The symposium hosted by the Global Network for Geospatial Health focused on Geospatial Health and Global Health Issues. The main goals of the symposium were to encourage local and international scientists to share data and geospatial health application methods. VMH:

The UNC Charlotte College of Health and Human Services, School of Nursing and Department of Social Work, in partnership with the UNC Charlotte Office of Veterans Student Services, Student Health Center and Counseling Center, and Mecklenburg County Community Support Services, Department of Veterans Affairs Regional Office and W.G. Hefner VA Medical Center, are cohosting “Access to Culturally Competent Health Services: Serving Military Veterans from a Holistic Perspective.” The event is funded by a grant from the UNC Charlotte Chancellor’s Diversity Challenge Fund.

The conference will feature a research poster session and opportunities for audience interaction and questions with all the presenters. Attendees also will have the opportunity to visit the “community services” vendor fair and view an art exhibit featuring works by Rob Bates, a former U.S. Marine Corps lance corporal and current UNC Charlotte student.

Healthy Aging: It is with great pleasure that we have the opportunity to announce that Dr. Michael Turner will be taking on the role as Director of the Healthy Aging Research Academy (HARA). Dr. Turner is not only a natural fit for this position because his research focuses on the intersection of cardiovascular functioning, physical activity and aging, but also because of his commitment to faculty research development and mentoring. I am confident that with Dr. Turner’s leadership and with support from Dr. Julian Montoro Rodriguez (our new Director of Gerontology), HARA will development into a strong research organization within our College, the University and the community.
