9th Grade Research Project
Mrs. Watts
Introduction
Congratulations! You have just won an all expense
paid trip to any country in the world that you choose.
You will be able to stay for seven days in one city, and you have been given
tickets to one major annual event or historical
cite anywhere in the country.
Introduction
First, you need to decide what country you want to visit and in what city
you will be staying. You are scheduled to leave on April 20th. It
will take you two days to prepare for your trip.
Introduction
Later, when you are on vacation, you will need to write a letter to someone back
home relating information about the country, the city, the weather, and the
event you have attended.
Day One
Today, You must start by finding information in three different sources. Each source will provide you with the information for each paragraph of the
letter you will be writing to a friend.
1 source (example: Encyclopedia)= The country
1 source (example: Internet site)= the city where you’ll stay
1 source (example: Nonfiction book)= the event/historical site.
Day One
For each source make a note card. You can learn how to make a note card on http://www.studygs.net/wrtstr5.htm.
Day One
You will also need to begin your Works Cited page today. For help making
this page, refer to your notes.
Remember to watch punctuation
and spacing!
Day Two
Today you need to finish your note cards and works cited page, if you have not
already finished. You also need to draw and color a map of your country. You may
get a sheet of white paper from me and color-pencils from the back of the library. Mrs. Senn has pulled books of maps for this particular project, or you may use
maps from the internet.
Day Two
Your map must include: (5 pts each)1. A clear border around the country2. The name of the country3. The capital4. All countries/bodies of water bordering the country5. At least one major mountain range or river6. The city you picked7. A compass 8. Every part of the map must be colored
Day Three
Today you need to address the envelope in which you will mail your letter back to the
United States. You may get a blank envelope from me. You will need to
address it to whomever you are writing your letter to, have your return address in
the city and country where you are vacationing, and design a stamp for the
upper-right corner.
Day Three
Here are some websites that may help you:
How to Address an Envelope
Find examples of stamps from your country
Day Three
You also need to begin your rough draft for your letter. Remember- you will have 5
paragraphs: an introductory paragraph; a paragraph about the weather this time of
year in the country; a paragraph about the city where you are staying; a paragraph
about an annual event, or historical place that you have visited; and a concluding
paragraph.
Day Three
*A rough draft should be hand-written on notebook paper.
How to write a friendly letter
Day Four and Five
You need to complete a final, typed copy of your letter and staple your works cited
page to the back of it.
If you need help with the letter format, you may use the following website:

Day Four and Five
When you have finished typing your letter and Works Cited Page, you must print your paper. If you are using a library
computer, you may click print (only once!). If you are using a laptop, please ask me
for assistance.
