soon allowed the ‘drive-thru’ another American icon, to develop. The first ever fast food restaurant is generally considered to be the White Castle restaurant in Wichita in 1916. The restaurant concept was based on offering a limited menu based around the hamburger; producing high volumes, at high speed and low cost. This was the start of the fast food chain mentality in America. By 1951 ‘fast food’ was listed in the dictionary. Although fast food chains have enjoyed unimaginable success in the last half of the 21st century, the fast food restaurant is under threat as society becomes increasingly concerned with both the health effects of this kind of food, and the way it is produced.
