What the globalization brings to the manufacturing is the fierce
competition.
According to statistic, around 70% of subsystems, components
and parts are variant design, even in new product design, over
60% of tasks are based on previous experience.
Therefore, knowledge based product design method gains more
and more attentions from both academic and engineering fields,
and it becomes an effective way to improve the efficiency and
quality of product design.

Knowledge Engineering in Design Process
Case 1:
Jaguar (Jaguar) auto company using knowledge engineering
technology in the design of a vehicle hood, shorten the design time
from 2 months to 2 hours
Case 2:
British Aerospace shorten the design cycle of A340-600 aircraft
wings to 10 hours by using knowledge engineering technologies
Case 3:
The Pratt & Whitney division of United Technologies Corporation
has utilized knowledge engineering technology for key components
and increase the efficiency tremendously.

Four research prospects:
How to decrease the information overload when knowledge reuse
How to integrate design knowledge, design process and design
engineer as a whole
For a given design knowledge base, how to evaluate its value
How to extract tacit design knowledge from expert’s mind

Exchange Student:
We have 15 exchange bachelors this year, this number
is only 2 in 2010, and we expect the number is up to 50
in the next year since KIT enjoy a very high reputation
among our students.
We also have over 15 graduate students further their
study in KIT annually
Research Collaborations:
Sino-German Electrical Vehicle Joint Project, Both
BIT and KIT are members of this project
Regular Seminars and workshops between KIT and BIT.
Prof. Fleischer and Prof. Proppe came to BIT; Prof Tang
went to KIT several times.

In response to KIT President's invitation, a BIT delegation headed by Vice President
Li Hezhang visited KIT on March 22, 2010, discussed in detail with Vice President
Norbert Henze, Mr.Achim Niessen from Intl Office, Prof. Wanner, Prof. Proppe,
Prof. Egle and Mr. Burkardt. The visit to IPEK was very impressive to BIT
colleagues.
Collaboration between BIT and KIT
KIT President Prof. Horst Hippler met BIT Vice President Prof. Changlu
Zhao and his delegation on 26 April 2012, signed a package of agreement
to extend two universities partnership. The Dean of School of Mechanical
Engineering, Prof. Changle Xiang (left 4) joined the visit.
