Cities as drivers of social changes
3
CIVIS Project Goal
• To enhance, integrate and validate ICT solutions to reduce energy use and carbon emissions in smart cities by leveraging on the potential of social networks and communities.
• Smart Grid• A smart grid is a modernized electrical grid that uses
analogue or digital information and communications technology to gather and act on information, such as information about the behaviors of suppliers and consumers, in an automated fashion to improve the efficiency, reliability, economics, and sustainability of the production and distribution of electricity. TU Delft WP3
• To design and develop ICT technology for social participation in energy networks• Managing communities• Energy services

Why social participation in Smart Grid?
• Control or management of what, how, when• Energy measurement/management• Hardware, software and HUMAN EFFORT
• Five ingredients: monitoring, analyzing, target, control, engagement
• Past experience, reports, surveys
8
Functionality of EMS
• show how, where and when energy is being used and wasted
• alert unexpected excess in consumption• enable to target and drive down consumption; uncover
areas for improvement• dynamic community formation and management • service agreement negotiation• highlight performance problems in equipment or systems• allow to check energy bills; provide automated energy
reporting• provide objective measurement of savings users have
achieved; help assess the success of energy saving measures
• help forecast energy demand
