1. INTRODUCTION
1.1 Rationale
In the context of globalization and the considerable development of the market
economy, the usage of English in general, and Business English in particular is
taken more and more serious. Nowadays, there are many students try to learnbusiness English or economic subjects in English at universities .It means that
business technical terms play an essential role in learning economic subjects at
ESP Department of DUFL, University of Danang. Comprehending business
technical terms help students acquire knowledge from economic subjects, do
research and study in this field more convenient. If students understand these
terms, they can approach a lot of economic information sources.
Although most students at ESP Department, DUFL are aware of the importance
of business technical terms in studying economics, they still can't get a good result
in studying economics because of having unsuitable methods to study business
technical terms, having no experiences in using them, having no chances to
practice in reality, and especially, not being corrected timely if using a wrong one.
Besides, during time we learn several subjects in University, some students have
showed no motivation and interest in studying, being self- taught, and using
business technical terms in studying economics.
For the above reasons, our research is carried out to find out the current situation
and the attitude toward learning and using business technical terms of senior
students at ESP Department, DUFL. In relation to that, the research will not only
help to find out seniors' difficulties in using business technical terms, but also
suggest some solutions for those. Thus, this research is hoped to be a minor
contribution to the studying of seniors at ESP Department, DUFL, University of
Danang.
1.2 Statement for the scope of the study
The study mainly focuses on seniors at ESP Department of DUFL, University of
Danang and is limited in analyzing and discussing the current situation of using
business technical terms.

1.3 Statement of the research aims and objectives
1.3.1 Aims
To investigate the current situation of using business technical terms of senior
students at ESP of DUFL with the aim at directing them to be better in using
business technical terms in studying.1.3.2 Objectives
This study is intended to achieve these following objectives:
To do a survey research to find out the current situation of using Englishbusiness technical terms
To find out reasons To suggest suitable and effective strategies to help students improve their
skills of using business technical terms
1.4 Research questions
To achieve the aims and objectives mentioned above, I will attempt to answer the
following research questions:
How often do senior students use business technical terms during studyingprocess?
What difficulties do they have when studying and applying businesstechnical terms into particular situations?
What are students' attitudes toward using technical terms?1.5 Hypothesis
This study is located as a part of research on the using of business technical
terms in ESP department. It is based on three hypotheses for the ineffective use of
business terms in students in ESP Department.
First, it is hypothesized that the ineffective usage of business technical terms instudents is due to the lack of instructions from teacher in methods of studying
economic subjects as well as the fact that students in ESPD are not taught
thoroughly in economic subjects.
In addition, many students are passive and not interested in using business
technical terms during studying and practice process. For example, there are many
8/12/2019 Research_9.10.13
8/22
8
sources of information and materials but students are not eager to use them
effectively. Or in studying process, they do not try to approach and learn more
business technical terms; just study a few simple words.
Finally, it is hypothesized that the ineffective usage of business technical termsof students at ESP Department of DUFL in part is due to lacking of experience in
using business technical terms and having no chances to practice them in reality. In
fact, students havent mastered in business technical terms that is why students usebusiness technical terms inappropriately and incorrectly. Besides, there are no
activities and clubs for students to join in order to exchange economics knowledge
as well as practice business technical terms.
1.6 Significance of study
This study plays an essential role in learning economic subjects at ESP
department. Theyre also important in studying and communicating later. Besides, using business technical terms helps students acquire economic knowledge, make
research and study in this field more easily. By understanding these terms, students
can approach many sources of economic documents in English
2. LITERATURE REVIEW AND THEORICAL BACKGROUND
2.1. Prior Research
Business technical terms play an important role for many people, especially in
the world globalization. Until now, many researchers have shown interest in the
field of using business technical terms and these related current situations. They
have carried out numerous studies and field observations to examine this topic. A
review of literature on previous studies related to using business technical terms
and current situations are presented in this section.
The first study of the matter should be mentioned is: Explore the learning needsof electronics students carried out by Luu Quy Khuong and Truong Thi PhuongChi. This thesis explored the needs, purposes of electronics student toward
technical terms in English and recommend a more effective syllabus .They did a
quite deep research on what skills were considered important, or specialized topics
were chosen for ESP .However, the survey didnt considered about the abilities
8/12/2019 Research_9.10.13
9/22
9
and the difficulties of these student when studying English for specific purposes,
technical terms in particular. In our opinion, we need to know that things for
designing an effective teaching and learning methods and find way to improve
their English skills, in addition, this research is just for electronics student ,we
want to widen for students learning about business, especially, in studying andusing business technical terms.
One of the important things related to our research is the reason of ineffective
learning English of students. Nguyen Thi Thuy Hong who had a research on Some of thoughts about improving methods of teaching Englishsaid that studentshadnt gained a good result in learning English because they were timid, passive, inactive to cooperate with friends, especially, students were fed up with learningEnglish because their teachers hadnt created inspiration for them. That is alsoproblem we are concerned about. She suggested that we should change the old
method into methods encouraging teamwork, gamesin class. Besides, Le ThiHanh (writer of The influence of teaching method into motivation for learning
English of the 1st students) claimed that the teachers should make students think
about their motivation for learning English. She also said that the teachers had to
stimulate students interest in studying and their curiosities about modern Englishin order for them to set the aim in learning English. According to Ngo Tu Thanh,
(Teaching is to have to teach the way to learn, to study and encourage activeness
of learner). All above researchers mentioned the importance of teaching methodsto motivate learners, however, the motivation students is not entirely created by
teaching methods. Students are those who create their own interest and motivation
for learning English, especially technical terms in business English. No matter how
much fun the teaching methods are, the students will not gain a good if they are not
aware of the importance of it and dont make effort in it.
In conclusion, currently there are no research similar to this is carried-out at ESP
Department of DUFL, University of Danang. All researches presented above show
that they mainly investigate into the needs of learners for specialized English
curriculum, teaching methods and student learning. Direct research on current
situation of using business technical terms of senior students at ESP Department of
DUFL, University of Danang has not been studied yet.

2.2. Theoretical Background
2.2.1. Definitions of Terms
Current situation of using business technical terms was brought into being to
study. The following sections will deal with the key concepts related to that.1. Current situation:
All the things that are happening and all the conditions that exist at present.
2. Business:The activity of making money by producing or buying and selling goods, or
providing services.
3. Technical term:Technical terminology is the specialized vocabulary of any field, not just technical
fields. Within one or more fields, these terms have one or more specific meanings
that are not necessarily the same as those in common use
4. Business technical terms:Specialized expressions using in all aspect of business: commerce, service...so on.
2.2.2. Theoretical knowledge
According to lexicology theory, language is an open and dynamic system not
static system. Especially, lexical level is more prominently open than the phonic or
grammatical levels .In addition, many languages figures such as: metaphors,
metonymy, smile and taboo make English become more complicated. Therefore,
vocabulary, especially vocabulary in business technical term is a difficult trouble
for students to understand it. The difficulties are not so much from detective
knowledge but from unfamiliar use with English and that consequently their needs
cannot be met by the course. That the reason why we want to find out what
difficulties students meet during their studying and suggest some solutions to
overcome them.
In the scope of this research, we focus on the ability of senior students in using
business technical term basing on the theory mentioned above.

3. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY3.1 Research Method
Our research collects data about current situation and capability of students in
using business technical terms and we also propose several solutions for
difficulties they have during studying and practicing business technical terms, helping students improve and enhance their abilities themselves. Besides the
planned information under the assumption choice test, our research has searched
some information on attitudes and opinions of students in using business technical
terms. Accordingly, the research is designed following qualitative description,
using quantitative information to confirm the judgments.
As regards the first, we use predictive analysis starting with some hypotheses
drawn from current situation of using business technical terms and my observation
on the students mistakes and their difficulties in study business technical terms ofstudents in ESP Department, DUFL, University of Danang. After collecting
materials for study, we use quantitative statistical analysis to identify the
frequency, attitudes and ability of students in using business technical terms.
3.2 Data Collection
3.2.1 Sampling and Population
In order to collect data of situation of using business technical terms of seniors at
ESP department, we use the systematic random sample. The sample is the reply of
students on questionnaires. We select randomly 100 seniors from 120 seniors at
ESP department to answer questionnaires. Using this sample will give us a
relatively accurate result because every seniors at ESP department has an equal
chance of being picked.
3.2.2 Subjects:
We decide to collect data from seniors at ESP department because they are
subjects of our research. These students study Business English, so they have great
demand of learning and using business technical terms. Therefore, we carry out asurvey on seniors at ESP department to find out a result of situation of using
business technical terms of these students.

3.2.3Instrument:
The data was obtained using 1 measurement instrument: survey with
questionnaires. The questionnaires were issued to the population of 60 students of
ESP Department, DUFL department on weekdays. To facilitate the survey, the
researcher made clear all the questions posed to students to get rid of students
confusion with the instructions in the questionnaires. The students were also given
some time to make up their mind on the choice of options or to give their feedback
to open-ended questions.
3.2.4. Research procedure
To carry out the study properly, we follow these steps:
- Designing a questionnaire consisting of 10 questions; the sequence is based on
the content:
+ Question 1 to 2: Students self-evaluations of their business vocabularyskills, the frequency of using these skills
+ Question 3-5: Students methods of studying business technical terms andtheir willingness to improve their knowledge of business subjects.
+ Question 6-7: Students attitude & motivation toward studying businesssubjects.
+ Question 8-9: Students opinions on the materials, teaching methods andeffective ways to acquire knowledge on business.
+ Question 10: Challenges students have to face in studying business
subjects.
- Asking students to answer questions in the questionnaire
- Analyzing and discussing the results
- Suggesting some implications for teaching and learning business technical termsand some suggestions for further research.

3.3. Data analysis:
Data collected will be mainly analyzed on the basic of the following points
- Analyzing the frequencies of using business technical terms in the study of
students at ESP Department.
- Identifying the study methods of ESP students in Business subjects
- Identifying the main problems that ESP students encountered during their study
of business technical terms.
The results of the analysis are then presented in mainly qualitative manner (in
words and nominal scales).
3.4 Validity and Reliability
All data we will collect and use in this research is accurate and reliable. Besides,
the questionnaire is arranged logically and is translated into Vietnamese, so the
seniors chosen are easy to understand. However, the validity and reliability of this
study is relative because the data collection was done on 100 seniors at ESP
department and we use the systematic random sample, so the representation of it is
not high.

4. FINDINGS AND DISCUSSIONS
Research results after launching and collecting 60 surveys shows current
situations of using and learning English business technical terms of seniors at ESP
of DUFL, Danang University.
4.1 Sel f-awareness towards using Engli sh business technical terms of seniors
Self-awareness and evaluations Numbers of responses %
Excellent 2/60 3.33%
Good 6/60 10%
Fair 21/60 35%
Bad 31/60 51.67%
The table above indicated that, just only 3.33% and 10% of seniors evaluate
themselves as excellent and good users respectively when using technical terms.
Almost all remains judge themselves as fair or bad ones. These prove that most of
seniors at ESP department are not confident in their ability of using business
technical terms.
4.2 Purposes of learni ng and practicing Engl ish business technical terms of
seniors
Purposes of learning Numbers of responses %
Understand Economics subjects 12/60 20%

Even though seniors at ESP Department are aware of the importance of English
business technical terms, not all of them use and practice regularly. Only 35 % of
students often apply and use, while 60% and 5% sometimes and rarely use these
terms.
4.4 Factors aff ecting learning and using Engl ish business technical terms of
seniors
Factors affect learning Numbers of responses %
Number of students in class 6/60 10%
Heavy syllabus 4/60 6.67%
Teachers instructions and teachingmethods
20/60 33.33%

16/22
16
statistics and results of 60 responses, we realize that 3 main elements strongly
influencing seniors are: students own efforts and patience, teachers instructionsand teaching methods and lack of reference and materials. As we can see, learning
and using English business technical terms require efforts and try from both
students and teachers. We need have more reliable reference or material as well asadvanced and more effective method of teaching and learning.
4.5 Popular methods of l earn ing Engl ish business technical terms of seniors
Methods of learning Numbers of responses %
Using dictionaries 15/60 25%
Using internet 39/60 65%

Asking friends 2/60 3.33%
Other (E-learning courses) 1/60 1.67%
Besides hundreds of method, we select only 4 main ones objectively and
subjectively that are popularly used by students. Results from 60 surveys represent
that the most popular way used by ESP students. Following closely behind is using
dictionaries with 25% and asking teachers or friends with around 8.33%. We alsoreceive another choice, E-learning courses from interviewer. These results implythat ESP students progressively learn English business technical terms by
themselves.

5. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS
Obviously, there are shortcomings in this research- it is not possible to draw firm
conclusions from 60 surveys only, and it would be necessary to see how these ESP
seniors response at university before we can confidently show firm trends in their
capability of using business English technical terms. A main aspect of this research
is that students show their awareness of the importance of using business English
technical terms, however, their effort of learning, using and practicing regularly are
not enough besides lacking of instructions, guidance from teachers as well as good
materials for references. If students continue to develop their ability in using
business English technical terms as they have progressed through university, theymight possibly be able to enhance their business English technical terms using and
well-prepared for their job in the future. Another factor that might influence the
results, particularly in the interviewers, is the fact that they did their surveys
online. This method can affect the honesty and accuracy of their responses. Using
offline surveys to conduct the interviewers) may produce little different results.
The main conclusion that can be drawn from this study is that the majority seniors
at ESP Department I have surveyed reflect current situations of using English
business technical terms in DUFL, University of Danang. Although this research is
conducted within DUFL, the problem being studied is somewhat similar to the
situation in some other universities in Danang areas. We hope that this study will
be reviewed and can contribute to improving the using and learning English
business technical terms in DUFL in particular and in other Danang universities in
general.
