Enjoy Cabin ComfortsThe park’s ten log cabins are nestled in the forest above the river and are open for reservations all year. Each of the five deluxe models is a 16-by-24-foot structure that sleeps up to five people. They have two rooms, a covered porch, and a bathroom with a shower. Other amenities include microwaves, refrigerators, outdoor propane barbecues, and TV and DVD players.
The five one-room rustic cabins sleep up to four people and provide lights and heat. A picnic table, fire ring, and tent space are just outside. Up to two pets (cats and/or dogs only) are allowed in the pet-friendly cabins for a fee.
Float in Summer, Ski in WinterLaPine’s summer activities include hiking, floating the river, fishing, wildlife viewing, and mountain biking. Play it safe on the river; it has a swift current.
In the winter, enjoy snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and unique mountain views. Roads in the park are maintained throughout the winter.
Golfers will find several top-notch public courses in the Sunriver and Bend areas located less than 30 minutes north.
PicnickingThe park’s large day use area is framed by a horseshoe bend in the river and features picnic sites, water and a restroom.
The “Big Tree”This 500-year-old Oregon Heritage Tree is the largest Ponderosa pine in Oregon with a circumference of 326 inches and a height of 162 feet.
More to SeeNewberry National Volcanic Monument is a volcanic wonderland that includes:
• Newberry Crater, a five-mile-wide caldera containing two popular fishing lakes (East Lake and Paulina Lake), obsidian fields, waterfalls, and unique lava formations. Panoramic views of the high desert and Paulina Peak reward hikers who reach the crater.
• Lava Lands Visitor Center (15 miles north), which features interpretive exhibits and a trail at the summit of Lava Butte, a 500-foot-high cinder cone.
• Lava Cast Forest, the world’s largest formation of its kind.
• Lava River Cave, a one-mile lava tube formed by a lava flow from Mt. Newberry. A trail into the underground conduit is open mid-May through mid-September (call 541-593-2421 for current hours and information).
Fort Rock State Natural Area is an ancient volcanic crater rising 325 feet above the sagebrush plains. The area was
inhabited by Native Americans over 10,000 years ago. The Fort Rock museum just south of the park has many artifacts on display and is open on weekends during the summer.
The High Desert Museum is an indoor/outdoor museum with trails and exhibits introducing the flora and fauna of the high desert. Live animal displays include an otter pond, a porcupine den, and reptile and raptor exhibits.
