RESI NEWS #4 Issue 4 Anzac Day Dawn Service: April 25 th marks an important day in many people’s lives throughout the world, commemorating the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps Remembrance Day. Despite the brutal wake up time and temperature 15 Deakin University Students, decided to brave the icy weather and pay their respects to past, present and future Military Service members by attending Warrnambool’s Dawn Service. Thousands of individuals attend the Dawn Service around the globe, not only in Australia or New Zealand, but even a march through London sees celebrations of the soldiers who risked life and limb in order to ensure we are able to live the lives we have today. Anzac Day was officially name on the 25 th of April in 1916, in order to honour the 60,000 lives which were lost during the war. There were government orders prohibiting large public gatherings in case of a Japanese air attack, so it was a small occasion, with neither a march nor a memorial service. Since then, Anzac Day has been commemorated every year. The Dawn Service attended has its origins throughout the Australian Army as during battle the half- light witnessed during dawn was favoured for the optimal time for attack. As per Military Routine, a Dawn Service Routine has been developed from the first person laying a wreath, as their own personal remembrance of a fallen comrade, to the bugler playing the ‘Last Post’ followed by 1 minute silence, which is concluded by the Reveille ringing through the morning light. Anzac Day Dawn Service:

April 25th marks an important day in many people’s lives throughout the world, commemorating the Australian and New Zealand Army

Corps Remembrance Day. Despite the brutal wake up time and temperature 15 Deakin University Students, decided to brave the icy weather and pay their respects to past, present and future Military

Service members by attending Warrnambool’s Dawn Service. Thousands of individuals attend the Dawn Service around the globe,

not only in Australia or New Zealand, but even a march through London sees celebrations of the soldiers who risked life and limb in order to ensure we are able to live the lives we have today. Anzac

Day was officially name on the 25th of April in 1916, in order to honour the 60,000 lives which were lost during the war. There were government orders prohibiting large public gatherings in case of a

Japanese air attack, so it was a small occasion, with neither a march nor a memorial service. Since then, Anzac Day has been

commemorated every year. The Dawn Service attended has its origins throughout the Australian Army as during battle the half-

light witnessed during dawn was favoured for the optimal time for attack. As per Military Routine, a Dawn Service Routine has been

developed from the first person laying a wreath, as their own personal remembrance of a fallen comrade, to the bugler playing the ‘Last Post’ followed by 1 minute silence, which is concluded by the

Reveille ringing through the morning light. On behalf of Deakin University Warrnambool

Resi Sport – Horse Racing Edition

Despite the cold weather and the potential rainy conditions, 20 odd brave Deakin Residents marched their way onto the Netball Courts to participate in the Resi Multi Sports - May Races edition with events such as "Tail Tag" and "Pin the Tail on the Horse". While the majority of the turnout was from the Green Gators, all teams present battled hard in every event.

The competitive nature of the sports almost became too much for our Resi Students with a potentially fatal (not really) collision between Green Gator, Justin and Blue Barracuda, Daniel. While Daniel’s injury looked cosmetically worse, both boys pulled out fine! All I can say is if our injury list keeps adding up, Warrnambool Base Hospital may be giving us a concerned call! Represent your team! See you at the next Resi sports! Louise Dunleavy, Green Gator

Easy chicken noodle soup Serves 4

Ingredients • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 1 medium onion, finely chopped

• 1 medium carrot, diced

• 1 large stick celery, thinly sliced

• 1 medium potato, peeled and diced

• 6 cups (1.5 litres) chicken stock

• 300g chicken breast fillets, diced

• 50g dried spaghettini pasta, broken into 5cm pieces

• 2 tablespoons chopped flat leaf parsley leaves • Thick wholegrain toast, to serve

Method

1. Heat oil in a saucepan over medium heat until hot. Add onion and cook, stirring often, for 3 minutes. Add carrot, celery and potato and cook, stirring often, for 5 minutes.

2. Add stock, cover and bring to the boil. Reduce heat, cover and simmer for 15 minutes. Add chicken and pasta, partially cover and cook for 8-10 minutes or until pasta is tender.

3. Stir through parsley. Season to taste. Ladle soup into serving bowls and serve with wholegrain toast.

Ham, cheese, and pea frittata Serves 4

Ingredients

• 2 tablespoons olive oil

• 1 red onion, thinly sliced

• 9 eggs

• 200g leg ham, cut into 1cm cubes

• 1 cup (120g) frozen baby peas (not thawed)

• 2 cups cooked macaroni or other short pasta

• 1 cup (120g) grated cheddar cheese

• Chutney, to serve

Method

1. Heat oil in a 22cm ovenproof frypan over medium heat. Cook onion, stirring, for 2-3 minutes until softened but not coloured.

2. Meanwhile, whisk eggs in a bowl with salt and pepper. Add ham, peas, pasta and cheese to pan with onion. Pour over the eggs, then reduce heat to very low and cook for 6-8 minutes until almost firm, tilting the pan and drawing in the sides from time to time so egg cooks evenly.

3. Preheat the grill to medium, then place pan under the grill for 3-4 minutes until top is golden. Cool slightly, then turn out and slice. Serve with chutney and salad.
