Located in the turquoise waters, where the Atlantic

Extraordinary HeritageFirst inhabited by the Lucayan Indians, The Bahamas’
recorded history dates back to the arrival of Christopher
Columbus, who made landfall in 1492 on his first voyage
to the New World. The first permanent European
settlement was established on Eleuthera in 1648 and
The Bahamas became a British Crown Colony in 1718,
remaining under British rule until 1973. Now a British
Commonwealth, The Bahamas comprises 29 main
islands, including New Providence Island, on which 70%
of Bahamians reside.

C U LT U R E
A tropical hybrid of Colonial, European, Caribbean and African traditions,
the culture of The Bahamas is felt throughout the islands. Most colorfully, it
is experienced in Junkanoo, the Bahamian street parade of music, dance and
art which highlights Nassau’s New Year’s Day and Boxing Day. Likewise, The
Bahamas is known for distinctive traditional straw crafts and Androsia fabrics,
found in open-air markets throughout the islands.

The local currency is the Bahamian dollar, which is tied to the U.S. dollar at a

Approximately 385,000 people reside in The Bahamas, with
70% of them calling New Providence Island home. Residents are
predominately of Christian faith.

Best known for its vast expanses of crystal clear water in every
imaginable shade of blue, The Bahamas is one of the world’s most
sought-after recreational destinations. Snorkeling, sailing, fishing,
windsurfing and scuba diving are popular pastimes in Bahamian
waters which are warmed to a comfortable 80 degrees by the
Gulf Stream. Visibility of up to 100 feet, as well as the largest
concentration of blue holes (underwater caves) in the world, makes
The Bahamas a dream destination for divers. On the southern side of
New Providence Island lies the Mermaid’s Pool, an inland blue hole.
