“CONFESSIONS OF A READAHOLIC”

By Ed Rand

I have a confession to make!

I am a READAHOLIC. I read too much.

If your put anything in front of me in writing, I consume it. I read on a regular basis, books,

magazines, newspapers, junk mail, cereal boxes, medicine labels, or the instructions on a package

of sweet ’n low.

The truth is it has always been that way with me. I suspect my addiction is really hereditary.

My Mom was a reader too. I recall she encouraged me to read at an early age. Looking back, I

suspect she was actually looking for an easy way to keep me amused, busy, and out of her hair.

There was no TV in those days.

My Dad was not only an avid reader; he was the fastest I ever knew. He could read more books

in a shorter time than anyone I met. It was not skim reading. He understood everything he read

and could repeat anything to you.

I recall when I was quite young, being taken to a public library. I guess you could say it was

like letting a neighborhood drunk into a saloon for the first time. I quickly wanted to absorb all

the pages of all the books I could get my hands on.

My late wife used to say I read too much. I had something to read in every room in the house.

There were magazines in the bathroom, newspapers in the kitchen, books in piles in the den. We

were often overrun by the written word.

I never go anywhere there will be waiting involved without a magazine or a paperback with

me. From a dentist’s office to an airport waiting room, I am always prepared to kill whatever time

I must by reading something.

My father-in-law built us a large ceiling to floor set of bookshelves for our den. My next-door

neighbor said “no-one could fill all those shelves.” He didn’t know me. The shelves were

overflowing with books quickly. I have a problem passing bookstores. I am drawn into them like a

moth to a flame. My wife used to say I could spend an hour browsing at Books -A-Million when I

should have been grocery shopping.

Finally, the addiction was effecting my lifestyle. Instead of doing my morning chores, I would

loiter at breakfast, my face in the morning newspapers. I finally came to realize the full extent of

my reading addiction. I caught myself seriously reading the back of a box of Special K cereal after

perusing the warning labels on a box of aspirin, I vowed to break my addiction then and there.

I began to avoid bookstores, Sometimes I walked out of my way to avoid them. My efforts did

not work. I soon began sneaking in boobooks and hiding them in places around the house. It

wasn’t I wanted to read them all, I just had to know they were there.

(continued on page 3)

Page 3: Resident Newsletter · I recall when I was quite young, being taken to a public library. I guess you could say it was like letting a neighborhood drunk into a saloon for the first

At last I joined Readers Anonymous. This organization was formed by addicted readers like

myself, who could not get enough of the written word and often over indulged. At our first

meeting, one of the group rose to her feet, adjusted her horn-rimmed and said “I am a

readaholic. Last week I read five copies of the Wall Street Journal, Time, Two issues of

National Geographic and that latest Nicholas Sparks novel. I am truly sorry.” Our group

leader said, “try to do better next week, dear. It might help if you got out of the house and

walked a little.”

I took this words to heart and walked around our block. A few houses down from ours,

someone had left a newspaper in the paper box. I took it and read it on my way home, so much

for long walks.

I am now on a reading rehab program. When I have an uncontrollable urge for a book, I

can call a Readers Anonymous member and he sends an illiterate friend over to my place and

forces me to watch sitcoms on TV with him until the craving passes.

Well, as they say, “often the cure is worse than the disease.”
