OVERCOMING OVERWHELMED:USING “BRAIN BASICS” TO CALM
THE STORM
by Linda Goode, M.A., PresidentSavant Human Resources Ltd.Creators of the Front Line Leadership Program
Do these words seem more and more familiar:overwhelmed, frazzled, tired, stressed, depleted? Have youever thought “a holiday sounds good…or maybe short termdisability”! Recently an article in the Calgary Herald statedthat 1 in 10 North Americans over the age of 12 are takingantidepressants. So what’s that about? Why don’t timemanagement efforts seem to be enough these days? Andwhat can you do about it?
The problem is actually pretty straight forward. Ourbrains are overwhelmed with input. More specifically, ourCentral Nervous System has too much “stuff” to process. Here’s an analogy. Picture yourself driving on a paved, wideopen country road with no traffic on a beautiful sunny dayversus driving on a 16 lane Toronto highway in a blizzardwith people driving faster and closer than they should be.Sound like a disaster waiting to happen? In terms of ourCentral Nervous Systems, many of us are living on the 16lane highway.
When we’re over stimulated, our “top brain” recedes and our“primitive brain” becomes more dominant. Here’s thekicker – our “primitive brain” is mostly formed by the timewe are 4 years old and it is primarily unconscious. So whenwe’re over stimulated, our 4 year old brains are running theshow and we usually don’t realize it. Behaviours likeblaming, whining, gossiping, snapping, withdrawing, making excuses, putting others down, etc. are usuallyindicative of our 4 year old brains running the show.Bottom line - it’s hard to be viewed as professional, competent or credible when our 4 year old “primitive” brain
is in charge. For those of you who will be attending CalgaryEWI’s November meeting, we’ll be discussing this in moredetail in my “Who’s Driving Your Bus” presentation. (Fordetails see page 14).
In addition to affecting our work selves, over stimulationaffects our lives. Have you heard the expressions “I’d like tobe a human being not a human doing”? If you seem to besaying this to yourself, what can you do about it? Thesolution is also pretty straight forward but, it is unpopular. It means consciously thinking about what impact eachchoice / action/ task will have on your level of stimulation. It means adjusting some of your activities and expectationsso that you can lower your level of stimulation.Unfortunately we tend to use time as the criteria for ourdecisions. Like “how can I fit that visit in? or “I’ve got to getthe kids to soccer, do the grocery shopping, and answerthose emails”. What if your decision was based instead onthe level of stimulation? For example, “I’ve had a really busyday at work I’m not going to the mall after work to shop forshoes. I’m going to have a hot bath, sit by the fire and havedinner instead”.
You can start to see why this solution is unpopular. Itusually means saying “no” to people or activities that wehaven’t said no to before...and that’s hard. It also meansthat we have to stop and notice ourselves to learn aboutwhat sooths our nervous systems and what doesn’t. That’shard too. In order to rest, our brains need a sense oftimelessness, spaciousness and silence. What kinds ofexperiences create that for your brain?
The concept of managing stimulation to calm the storm issimple; the application can be more difficult. The rewards, however, can be significant. You might find yourself sayingthings like “I liked the way I handled myself at work today”or even “I really love my life”. Imagine that!

Hello EWI Membership,
I would love to have something profound to say in this VicePresident’s report. However, having only accepted and beenin the role for just 8 days, there won’t be anything epic - yet!
I can say that I am extremely excited to be part of this Boardof Directors. It is impressive to see how many new EWImembers have stepped up to Board positions this year. There are 6 member representatives on the Board (myselfincluded) that have been with EWI for less than a year. Ibelieve that the energy that comes with newness, complimented by the infinite wisdom of the more seasonedmembers on the Board, will create a dynamic team. I’mlooking forward to being part of that team.
I am thrilled to be on the Board for the next few years when, for the first time in the history of EWI, our CorporatePresident will be from Calgary. I hope that we can makeKaren Skirten proud and I am excited about the visibilitythat the Calgary Chapter may get as a result of her position. We are doing some amazing things here - I’m hoping that Ican help keep up the momentum.

Don’t rake thisfall, use yourlawn mower. Setyour mower’sblade height atthe highest deck
and mow your leaves into confetti. Use asharp blade on a normal mowing speed,it’s most efficient when the leaves are nomore than 4 inches deep. It’s best tomow when leaves are damp frommorning dew (but not sopping wet fromrain). That way they won’t fly around asmuch, or set off allergies. You may haveto run over them twice.
Once chopped into small bits, here arefour tips to use them in your gardeninstead of sending them to the dump:Left in place on the lawn, they act as freefertilizer, returning nutrients andorganic matter to the soil.
Spread over top of your perennial beds, fall leaves act as winter mulch, providingan insulating blanket, improving soilquality as they break down. Also useleaves in your fall mulch when plantingfall bulbs and other fall plantings thatmay be susceptible to frost heaving.
In the vegetable garden, mix chopped upleaves into the soil. They will decayquicker over the winter than leaves leftwhole. In the spring the soil surface willbe free of clumps, making sowing seedsless of a chore.
Cleaning up fall leaves and placing themnear your compost pile ensures that youhave an excellent source of “brownmaterial” to help in the compostingprocess. The leaves balance the greenmatter in the pile so that the break-down of the materials will happen morequickly and thoroughly.
Wait till a fresh fall day where you canspend some time playing in the leaveswith your family before you chop them up.

HUMOR IN THE WORKPLACE
Check Your Shampoo Bottle Label.
I dont know WHY I didnt figure this out sooner! It’s the shampoo I use in the shower!
When I wash my hair, the shampoo runs down mywhole body and (duh!) printed very clearly on theshampoo label is this warning FOR EXTRA VOLUME AND BODY!
NO wonder I have been gaining weight!!!
Well! I have gotten rid of that shampoo and I amgoing to start using Dawn dish soap instead.
Their label reads,DISSOLVES FAT THAT IS OTHERWISEDIFFICULT TO REMOVE.
Problem Solved!!!
If I don’t answer the phone …I’ll be in the shower!!!
