Redwood Coast Seniors has been serving people on the coast for four decades. To use a coastal motif, during that time, the senior center has, like most of us, had a history of smooth sailing as well as turbulent storms. For the past couple of years the center has come out of a hurricane, weathered the near wreck, caught the wind, and is moving along with confidence.

TreaT everyone nicely“The only thing we have to do is treat everyone nicely,” says Charles Bush, Executive Director of

Redwood Coast Seniors. And it’s working. The atmosphere at the center is nurturing, cheerful, bustling, and positive. After some stormy times, they’ve gone through a fairly long period of reconciliation, to restore harmony and trust within the center and within the community. “We strive for excellence and transparency. My door is always open,” Charles says.

He spends the first half hour or more talking about the employees and how hard they work, what tremendous people they are, and who to talk with.

“As staff employees, a great example for excellence is John Herrick, one of our bus drivers. He has a willingness to do anything to make it better for others, his constant enthusiasm and joy inspire everyone around him,” says Charles. “And he’s not the only one! Sal Meza is a gifted chef with a heart of gold, he’s a person who can be counted on.”

Running the center is an uphill battle financially, “It’s tough now, from the day I arrived our annual income was cut $150,000.” That’s a huge hit for any organization but in a non-profit with a budget of $750,000, it’s staggering.

“We had to get smarter quicker,” he says emphatically. “We’ve had a salary freeze, which makes it tough on people, but I haven’t had to lay anyone off. We all work harder and take more on.”

“Everyone understands that when we get more money, they’ll get more money. We do try to pay more than minimum wage, we restored free lunches for employees (and volunteers), increased vacation time to three weeks (even first-year employees) and allow flex time,” Charles states.

“We have to beg and bake-sale more,” he laughs and then continues more seriously, “Fund-raising is crucial—we’re doing more breakfasts, dinners, and asking for monetary support by mail. It’s working, we’ve made up about half of the deficit with fund-raising.”

There’s a very supportive Board of Directors, in fact most board members volunteer at the senior center in one way or another. “Our volunteers work hard for the center; if they were paid, it would cost another $110,000 in wages we don’t have. We couldn’t do it without them,” Charles concludes.

covered parking? It’s impossible not to notice the huge new addition to the senior center parking lot. Wow! Is that

“covered parking”? Pretty fancy, right? According to Director of Facilities and Transportation with the Fort Bragg Unified School District, John

Griffiths III, it’s actually elevated solar panels and only incidentally covered parking. A bond was passed in 2006 to upgrade and modernize all schools within the district. The school benefits but so does the senior center because the building is owned by the district.

aT The hubExcept for the guys working on puzzles in the atrium, Clytie Potter is often the first person anyone

sees; she’s sat at the hub of the senior center, the front desk, for the past twelve years. If she doesn’t have all the answers, she knows who does.

Clytie coordinates the transportation of individuals by the senior center busses. “Our ridership has increased to about a thousand rides a month. People call and we get them right away. We have two wonderful bus drivers, John Herrick and Jack Struthers.” She explains that with a punch ticket people can ride for a dollar.

“I like working at the front desk. I not only see changes in people but I get to work with lots of different people.”

Speaking of changeSWhen one walks down the long hall toward the dining room many faces look down from both sides

of the walls. Who are all these people? They are seniors, past and present, who have had their portraits painted by artist David Jenks. Many lives depicted here, many stories to tell. Want your portrait painted? All it takes is to sign up with Clytie.

geTTing aroundThe senior center has two buses, “think of us as the ‘elder taxi’. We don’t run scheduled routes. Instead,

folks call in and we go pick them up at home and deliver them to their destinations. Door-to-door and back again for all seniors. Our drivers personally assist with people and their packages—whatever it takes to make our elders comfortable, secure and independent.”

One of those drivers is John Herrick. “I just need to get people where they’re going, hug the ladies, and shake hands with the men.” John knows there’s more to it than that, “With all the people who ride the bus being a good listener is the most important part of the job; respecting who they are, understanding what is going on with them. In a way everyone is a parent or grandparent,” John says.

“It’s truly special, it’s a beautiful place this senior center of ours. My favorites are in the day program. I get to hear about their lives, where they used to live, what they’ve done; it’s the interaction of sharing and listening,” John shares.

“Sometimes I hear their problems. Many worry about being a burden to their families. They like to come to the senior center itself or the day program because then they feel their family members can go do what they have to do.”

“I’ve been here about six years and I love it. Even at sixty-three I don’t have any plans for retirement. I figure I’m good for at least another decade,” John says with satisfaction.

in The dining roomWe’re having turkey and all the trimmings, the place is a madhouse—wild, raucous; all the seats in

the hall are filled with people waiting for lunch; in the dining room people are yelling amiably. “I’ve come up from Mendocino for Susan Larkin’s strength training class for four years; it’s three times

a week but I come up twice and then I stay for lunch,” Henrietta Steiniger says. “I’m doing reasonably well at (age) eighty-three; there are a couple of people in their nineties in the class, and younger, too. Susan exudes joy! We have a great time.”

“The senior center is an important institution and needs all the support anyone can give. It’s vital; it’s the center of many people’s lives. It’s a lovely atmosphere; the social hour for many. There’s a joie de vivre!” Henrietta smiles.

Alice Garner tells me she worked at the “Mill,” which was the largest employer on the coast for nearly one hundred years. The senior center is “the best job I’ve had in my entire life, and I’ve been working all my life.” I couldn’t agree more, for I, too, worked at the Mill and at RCS—no comparison.

Alice started out volunteering for a year and was hired seven years ago, working in the kitchen. “I get along great with Sal (Meza, the chef). It’s the best program in Fort Bragg. People can’t get a better meal. Now we have a salad bar and we make sure there’s protein included.” An average of one hundred to

In fact, over fifty people every week put in a few hours serving or delivering meals, running The Attic, gardening, helping in the day program, fixing the building, staffing the office, being on the board, or running events.

The Attic has changed, it now takes consignment items. This started about six months ago. “These items are more upscale and upbeat for young teens to older individuals,” Diane explains.

“It works great for everyone, people in the community get some money for their gently used clothing, jewelry and collectibles, and it directly benefits the seniors by paying for needed services. Proceeds are split 50/50. We sell a lot of fresh consignment items. We work with people to come up with a fair price; at the end of six months they can take it home, discount the item, or they could outright donate it.”

The Attic is particular about what get’s donated. “Nothing stained or ripped. Items need to be clean and wearable. What we want are things that someone can put on and wear immediately. No underwear,” she states.

As with everyone I’ve talked with, Diane gets a great deal of satisfaction from her job. “The hardest part is when people pass on,” Diane says. “It happens. ‘What? He’s gone? But I see him every day...’”

“Volunteers are a huge part of the senior center,” Diane says. “If it weren’t for them the center wouldn’t run. Because I interview every volunteer before they start they become like friends or family. Especially the very dedicated ones, they’re at the center frequently so we laugh and talk a lot.”

Social day programElizabeth Morton came to the coast fresh from living in India three and a half years ago. “This job

draws on all my skills and, of course, particularly on my heart,” Elizabeth says. On the professional side, she’s a licensed clinical social worker and has an M.A. in dance therapy.

She and the “giving, kind and joyous” volunteers provide care each day at the senior center. “I have wonderful volunteers,” she says.

“We call it the Circle of Elders Social Day Program. The focus is to create a circle of seniors who are welcomed in and treated with the utmost respect. We take care of each other, enhance their self-esteem, and we want them to have fun, to laugh and—we do it all.”

“It’s a therapeutically planned program,” she explains. “They are around their peers, which is important. We do a lot of memory stimulation, encourage them to remember their past, to feel that they have accomplished things so they can say ‘Hey, I am somebody’ and it’s a way for us to get to know them,” Elizabeth says with zest. “When we aren’t stimulated, we lose our sense of enthusiasm.”

Music is an integral part of the program. Different musicians come in each day, such as Earl Oliver, Jan Kessner, and Marcus McCallen. “Jan is priceless, she’s a professional who knows songs from every country. In fact, they’re all priceless!” Elizabeth say enthusiastically. “Music is key because even if someone has cognitive difficulties they all remember the music and all the words of a song from their era.”

“We aim to touch on all parts of a person; mental, emotional, physical and spiritual so they feel like a whole person. Plus, we talk about big issues; what it’s like being in a wheel chair, losing friends, family or others. Everyone is so open in what they say,” Elizabeth states.

We’re talking about the senior program but Elizabeth has great advice for all of us. “Do a lot of brain stimulating games. That slows down memory loss. Learn new things that are outside of what you already know. Learn to play chess, a new type of dance, a language, word games. They all help,” she explains.

The other half of this program is respite for the families that are providing care for, usually, their parents. This program is a way for people to stay in their homes longer, Elizabeth informs me. “Their family

knows they are in a safe, caring and fun place. Both aspects, staying in their homes and being involved in a stimulating program, help them retain their faculties; retain memories longer. They’re more engaged with life; overall, they’re happier people who have a fuller life.”

In conjunction with the program, Elizabeth Morton and Waldi Helma lead the Caregiver Support Group on the first Friday of each month.

Redwood Coast Seniors is a vital, alive organization dedicated to serving the needs of resident and visiting seniors. Programs are numerous and varied. Whether a person is over the age of sixty or is a

“young” senior or elder, there are activities to enhance an already full life or to help when life seems to be too much.

Come up for lunch with friends or make new ones. Visit The Attic—you never know what you’ll find; consult with experts to solve a problem. Volunteer your time—you’ll get back more than you put in and get a free lunch!

Redwood Coast Seniors – 490 North Harold Street Fort Bragg, CA 95437 707.964.0443 www.rcscenter.org

two hundred people eat lunch in the dining room five days a week (forty-six thousand meals a year). On November 18, the turkey dinner with homemade pumpkin pie was a hit to 191 people!

“Everyone socializes, they have their favorite tables and meet their friends every day. It’s more than social though, if a friend isn’t here I worry and call them.”

Alice helps out with the fund-raising meals. “We have to do so much more because of funding cuts,” Alice says. “We have special events about once a month, a breakfast one month, and a dinner the next.” Going to a special event at Cotton Auditorium? Have dinner first at Sal’s Bistro at the senior center.

“I used to come up here before I worked here, when my husband and I got old enough,” Alice laughs.“Plus there’s a lot going on. On Thursdays there’s nickel Bingo in the activity room. On Tuesdays a group

of us work on a quilt that is hand-quilted. Twice a month there’s sewing, one of the days in conjunction with our quilting meeting.”

“This place is a home; there’s a lot of heart here. And here I am, seventy-four years old, still working because it’s such a great place.”

mealS on WheelS“I’ve been here about fifteen years, I think. My husband and I worked together delivering Meals on

Wheels until he passed,” Sandy Edwards recalls. “It’s like family. I’ve been going to people’s homes forever and a day. It’s good for me, too. I have a

purpose now that my husband is gone. I go out and about and socialize with clients,” Sandy says.Sandy gets a lot of questions about the program, mostly what they have to do to get Meals on Wheels

(MOW). “People have to be sixty years old, be homebound or not have cooking facilities or can’t prepare meals for themselves. Just recently, I had a question about a woman who’s blind. She can’t cook for herself.”

“A lot of people are on fixed incomes and might not be eating every day. On Fridays we give frozen meals to people so they have something for the weekend,” Sandy explains.

Delivering meals every day is also a safety check on their well-being. “If someone has fallen I call 911 and let the medical people take care of it.”

“It’s fun,” says Sandy. “I’ve got something to do for myself and something to do for people.”

moW and moreAs with everyone else, Waldi Helma handles a large number of tasks. When I asked her what her job

entailed she said, “I do a wide variety of things, but officially I’m the supervisor of Meals on Wheels, the Consultation, Information, Referral and Support Program, and the Health and Wellness Program. Although these are separate, they can overlap,” Waldi says.

MOW serves seniors at least sixty years old who can not come to the center for their nutritionally balanced lunches. The center sends out sixty to eighty Meals on Wheels a day. “We always encourage people to come to the center for meals and the social aspect, but not everyone can. Or maybe they get MOW for a time, become stronger and healthier, and then are able to come up. ”

A part of the Consultation Program could be to evaluate what a senior’s needs are. “This will answer any questions a senior has,” Waldi says. “For instance, people can become isolated for a variety of reasons but we can arrange transportation and support services such as peer counseling, so they can enjoy life to the fullest.”

It’s a mix of consulting, referrals for case management, giving information, and encouraging and supporting each individual. Each person has a different need and decisions may change.

One issue may have several solutions. “We look to see how the person can be best served, we hook them up with whatever it is. For instance, I may get a couple of heaters for someone who has none and that literally warms up their life,” Waldi shares. “The next person may have a heater but needs help with money management so they can pay their heating bills.”

Within the Health and Wellness program, and funded by a grant from the Mental Health Services Act, Redwood Coast Seniors administers a program called Senior Peer Counseling that is free of charge. Trained individuals fifty-five and older help with grief, depression, emotional difficulties or other life-changing incidents in people’s lives. Peer counselors are trained to give individualized, specialized attention to seniors.

“It’s never the same, each day is different and each person is different, and amazing!” Waldi concludes.

The Senior choruSIra Rosenberg has been teaching the senior chorus singing class since 1984. The chorus is the oldest

program they have there and has been ongoingly popular every Friday, from one to three. Between eleven and fifteen people participate in the class and put on concerts at Sherwood Oaks and other venues around town. In the past, Ira says, there have been up to thirty members. They created what Ira calls the best fake book in the world, a tome full of music and lyrics to hundreds of standards from the American song book they have collected over the years. They use it to build an extensive repertoire of jazz and popular musical numbers, and perform them enthusiastically with Ira’s soulful piano accompaniment.

The aTTicLaurel Moss tells me she’s been volunteering for a year or two at The Attic, the center’s thrift shop. “I

like it because there’s a variety of things to do and I enjoy the social exchanges. Plus, I can buy clothes inexpensively and it’s a place I can donate the things I no longer want.”

Laurel’s passion is teaching English as a second language which she’d done for the past twenty years in Greece, the Czech Republic, Yemen, Mexico and most recently, China.

She’s also an accomplished poet and for the past six years has taken up ceramics.Diane Taylor is another resident who vacationed on the coast for decades until moving here permanently

eight years ago. “I live two blocks away; I can walk to work.” She’s an artist and was involved in theater for twenty years in the Sacramento area.

She’s worked at the the senior center for five years and wears a lot of hats; Communications Manager, the manager of The Attic, and Volunteer Coordinator for The Attic and the dining room.

It’s Diane’s job to handle the menus for special events, see to posters for the event, advertise in local papers, obtain a liquor license, write the public service announcements, and do the Web design.

In the dining room there have to be twenty-five to thirty volunteers per week. “We always need more! These are the people who serve the meals and bus the tables.” And who says there’s no free lunch in life? If you volunteer, you get a free lunch!
