This publication will provide you with some updates about and plans for this next school year. First, we have been finishing off many of the projects that were funded during the 2012 Capital Projects Levy. We just completed the second phase of the high school roof replacement, and the West Hills STEM addition is awaiting the final inspection. In addition, the instructional technology upgrades and equipment replacements are ongoing, the fire panel and general energy upgrades were completed, and we are already starting to realize the energy savings from these improvements. Additionally, the Kitsap Community Foundation received a $1M grant from the state to replace the roof on the gym at the old East High School site, and the West Sound Technical Skills Center received funds to upgrade the HVAC system and the fire alarm panel system. Preparations are underway for an additional portable at View Ridge Elementary to help address growth on the east side. More recently, Bremerton voters supported the 2016 Capital Projects Levy. With this support, we can focus necessary resources to improve student safety with updated security cameras, an upgraded telephone system, and playground structures to support physical activity. Additionally, removal of the non-usable East High facilities, refurbishment of the Performing Arts Center, and the addition of turf fields at Bremerton High School and the Knight’s Field will address some of the concerns shared with me and the School Board over the last couple of years. Renewing our field spaces with artificial turf will allow our students and our community to utilize fields that match those in our surrounding districts. Although our enrollment growth has posed some challenges, we will continue to address our space issues with both short and long-term planning to make the most of our available space. Again, your financial support of the facilities, our students, and families is a testament to how great schools build great communities. Thank you! Ms. Stone was an Assistant Principal at Chief Leschi Elementary in Puyallup. She has vast experience as a classroom teacher in both general education, special education, and as an Instructional Coach. Her experience includes working in the Tacoma, Peninsula, Central Kitsap, and South Kitsap School Districts before working at Chief Leschi Elementary in Puyallup.

Ms. Sweet was the Principal at River Ridge High School in North Thurston Public Schools. She has held the Principal and Assistant Principal positions in high school and middle school. Before becoming an administrator in North Thurston Public Schools, Ms. Sweet was a language arts teacher in North Thurston and spent one year in the Snoqualmie Val-ley School District before returning to North Thurston where she spent more than 20 years as an educator. Ms. Sweet is a native of Kitsap County where her family still lives and is very excited to return to the community where she has very strong roots.

Mr. Herrington was the Director of Business & Support Services in the Aberdeen School District where he had been since 2011. He joined the Aberdeen School District from the Port Townsend School District where he held the position of Manager of Facilities & Operations from 2007 until 2011, when he joined the Aberdeen community. David joined Bremerton in January.

Casey Lindberg was the Assistant Principal at Kopachuck Middle School in the Peninsula School District. He will be the BHS Athletic Director and teacher beginning with the 2016-17 school year. If his name sounds familiar to some of you, Mr. Lindberg was a former teacher and Dean of Students about six years ago at Bremerton High. Mr. Lindberg has an extensive background with athletics, holding positions as head coach for basketball and tennis.

The “Food Share” program resulted from a partnership between the Bremerton School District, the State of Washington, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Under the program, student volunteers gather unopened, undamaged fruit, beverages, and snacks that would ordinarily be headed to the landfill and store the items in a refrigerator at the school until the Salvation Army picks up the food. The Salvation Army then distributes the food to food banks in the community so it can make its way to those individuals and families most in need. The program is expected to divert 32,000 lbs. of perfectly edible, nutritious food from the landfill every year, saving water, energy, and landfill space.

On Saturday, May 14, 2016, many happy students, families, and staff joined together for a day of service sprucing up the downtown core to help Bremerton shine in preparation for the annual Armed Forces Day Parade. Naval Avenue PTA came and thoughtfully treated us to popcorn. After the event, Seaside Church generously served us a delicious complimentary lunch. We were joined by Mayor Lent, City Councilman Greg Wheeler, City of Bremerton Parks Department Volunteer Coordinator, Sunny Wheeler, School Board members Alyson Rotter and Naomi Evans, and representatives from Bremerton Kiwanis, The first day of school for the 2016-17

school year for Kindergarten students is Tuesday, September 6, 2016. Kindergarten parents will be contacted by their student’s teacher to set up a time to meet and get to know each other, discuss any concerns, and ask questions prior to the first day.

The 2016-17 Academic Calendar is now available including information on holidays, non-student days, parent conferences, and more. Visit the District website at www.bremertonschools.org.

"If we can do it, they can too!" The Bremerton School District, in partnership with our PTA’s, started a new tradition. The 2016 Bremerton High graduates toured the halls of our elementary schools. In part, to be celebrated and also to show elementary school students what they are working toward. This event will occur right after the high school graduation rehearsal every year. Congratulations Bremerton High 2016 graduates!

Naval Avenue Early Learning Center received the Washington State Achievement Award for High Progress. Schools must meet the 95% participation rate on state tests to be eligible. Schools qualify for recognition if they are in the top 10% of schools making the most progress in the reading/ELA and math combined performance of the All Students group, using three years of data. The Progress Score is an average of an Achievement Score and an Improvement Score. Congratulation students and staff!
