The Hills Home Hub delivers anddistributes data, phone, video, audioand TV signals using the latest indata and TV cables from a centrallylocated enclosure to any room ofyour choice.

Structured cabling using the HillsHome Hub is preferably planned atthe same time as your electricalwiring. The central enclosure ishome to the devices that enable the

delivery and distribution of thesesignals. It also houses the securitysystem central controller. An ideallocation for the central enclosure isa garage or utility room.

It is important to plan whichrooms you would like to accessdata, phone, video, audio and TV.This planning is important to younow and to future owners of yourhome later because it adds flexibility

and value. The use of a room couldchange over time. A nursery now willbecome a teenager’s bedroom, andpossibly a study or home office inthe future. In order to access orshare these signals, cables alongwith wall outlets, containingstandard data and TV entertainmentpoints need to be installed.

Welcome to a day in the life of theHills Home Hub.

“SMART WIRING™” is a term commonlyused to describe home wiring that mayinclude, but is not limited to, one or moreof the following:• Structured telephone, data (Internet)

and TV cabling (such as described inthis document)

• Home security — intruder detection,back-to-base monitoring or CCTV(Closed Circuit Television)

• Home theatre and/or in-houseaudio/video distribution

• Home automation — “intelligent”lighting, automatic/remote control ofelectrical appliances, HVAC (Heating,Ventilation and Air Conditioning),lawn/garden irrigation, etc.

• Intercom with video and audio and alsomay include music distribution and or CCTV.

Such systems may be wired separatelyby different installers or may be includedin a total wiring package offered by aSmart Wired builder or contractor. However, let’s just concentrate firstly onyour telephone, data and TV cablingsystem – your communications.

HOME DISTRIBUTION UNIT (Hills Home Hub)

The HDU is the central hub of the smartwiring network of the home. Typically it isa steel cabinet installed in the garage witha lock that houses all of the passive and

active equipment. All services enter andexit this cabinet. This allows for totalflexibility for the home owner in thefuture. It must be of a minimum size of405mm wide (to fit between studs),600mm high and 112mm deep. Typicallythe bottom of the cabinet is mounted1200mm above finished floor level and isrecessed into the wall with bottom andtop ventilation into the cavity wall.

It needs to be large enough to cater forany active device such as alarm panels, television amplifiers, data switches and240Vac power outlets and have enoughroom for cable looms, IDC blocks, splittersand couplers.

It is the responsibility of theBuilder/Telecommunications Contractor toprovide the Smart Wiring™ and HomeDistribution Unit.

LOCATION OF HOMEDISTRIBUTION UNITThe HDU is typically installed inside thehouse in an accessible location. Choose adry, well ventilated area at least 1m awayfrom high energy rating electricalequipment to prevent electromagneticinterference. This can include electricalswitchboards, supply meters, fluorescentlights, electrical transformers, generators, ducted vacuum motors, and power tools inoperation, air conditioning units,

refrigerators or freezers. The bottom of theHDU must be mounted at a height abovefloor level between 350mm and 1700mm.

CHOICES OF HOMEDISTRIBUTION UNITThere are a few different types of HDUs tochoose from. A basic HDU is installed bymounting the equipment on a wall andhaving no enclosure. Be sure to haveadequate ventilation for the componentsand supply a 10 Amp double GPO for thePower supply and optical receiver.

Alternatively a more professionalinstallation using a Hills Home Hub unitcan deliver flexibility and can have anadditional option of a security system andaudio reticulation. £

Fibre to the homeHome Technology

Life TechnologiesBy Rob Knight

Want to ask a question inrelation to home technology anddon’t know who to ask?

You don’t need to wait until the next issue foryour questions to be answered, simply email us [email protected], ask your questionand it will be answered within a few days.

WHY DO I NEED SOME SORT OF SMARTWIRING (ALSO KNOWN AS STRUCTUREDCABLING) IN MY NEW HOME?A Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network deliversmultiple services via a single fibre to a dwelling and/orbusiness. Typically the optical Network Terminal (ONT)that terminates the fibre at the premises has fourEthernet ports, one RF TV, and two telephone ports. One of the Ethernet ports can be used to deliverInternet Broadband. The remaining three ports can beused in the future for Internet Protocol TV (IPTV), e-Health, e-Education, Smart Grid and otherapplications without the need to subscribe to anInternet service. To ensure a home takes full advantageof all the currently available services such as Internet, phone and TV plus the flexibility of being able toquickly and easily connect future services when theybecome available, a structured wiring solution is highlyrecommended. It is important that Category 5e orhigher cable is installed in a home where Internet, phone, TV or other future services will be requiredalong with RG6 to rooms requiring television.

DOES THE BUILDER INSTALL THESMART WIRING?The OptiComm FTTP network boundary is the ONT,i.e. the unit that converts the fibre optic interfaceto copper cabling installed on the outside of thedwelling. All in-house wiring including the smartwiring enclosure and termination blocks are theresponsibility of the builder and/or home owner.

WHAT IS OPTICAL FIBRE?Optical fibre is an advanced cabling solution usedto transport digital and analogue information. Onesingle strand of fibre cable can transmit manyhundreds of Gigabits of data over distances of tensof kilometres. The optical fibres within the cableare made of silica (glass) and light is used totransport the information along the fibre strand. The outer layer of the optical fibre has a differentrefractive index to the core of the fibre and act likea mirror to reflect the signal along the cable.Multiple wavelengths of light (colours) can be usedto transport multiple signals on a single fibrestrand that can significantly increase the datacapacity of a cable. £

According to the latest surveys theaverage urban Australian home now hasabout four web-connected devices, everything from laptops, televisions, blu-rayplayers, games consoles, set top boxes, internet radios and now smart phones andwith lots more on the way.

It’s a trend that’s here to stay as theinternet seeps into every corner of our livesand gets added to nearly everything we use.Not only is it now central to how wesocialize and communicate, but increasinglyunderpins how we shop, work, relax andjust plain live at home. What’s more, everyone in the family’s on board.

Most of this home connectivity eitherhappens fairly haphazardly without muchplanning or worse, gets presented as a starkchoice between wireless or wired. Thereality is that most of us are already relyingon a sensible mix of the two in what I like tocall the new ‘hybrid home’.

While each technology has its fierceadvocates, the truth is they both have theirbenefits and drawbacks. Cabled connectivityis undeniably a lot more stable-oftenhandling the higher speeds, bigger digitalmaterial and whole house networking muchmore reliably-while wireless is moreconvenient and easier to install.

And like all things technological they’reboth getting better at what they do, as wellas smarter and less costly over time. Just this

year technology company Alcatel Lucentpushed much bigger speeds over cablesthan had ever been thought possible beforeat the same time that lots more productsare being embedded with wireless.

Does it matter? Yes it does. Not only willmost Australian homes get optic fibre attheir front doors over the next decade-withits promise of blistering internet rates-buthow we live at home will increasingly

depend on how well our homes handletechnology.

For a start, home entertainment whichhelped lead the digital revolution will soonbe driven completely online throughstreamed movies, television and music, andincreasingly come in 3D, High Definition oreven Ultra High Definition formats. Add invideoconferencing, smart appliances, energymanagement, ework and ehealth-to namejust a few emerging trends-and you get areal glimpse of the future.

Modern homes no longer need to choosebetween being either plugged or unpluggedwhen putting them together really bringseveryone-and everything-up to speed. £

THE NEW ERAIN HYBRID HOMESOur homes are filling up with smartgadgets, but as Steve Freeth* says it allworks best using a mix of technology.

SMOOTH SOUNDS OF B&W ZEPPELIN SPEAKERBowers and Wilkins or B&W is a posh British audio company best known for creating

seriously smooth hi-fi equipment. The company produced the speakers that sit inside

the Abbey Road studios, so it's fair to say that they're rather good at the old tweeter-

and-woofer jive.

The black-clad speaker is sleek and imposing, its heft and lack of buttons adding

up to one fine-lookin' piece of audio not to mention the mere shape of it.

Compared to other iPod docks, the Zeppelin sounds fantastic. Songs are rich, full

Procedure:Sauté the onion, parsley, and garlic in the oilin a deep bottomed pot. Once the onion hasturned translucent, stir in the choppedtomatoes and season the mixture to taste. This is one of the few hot North Italian

dishes, so don't feel you must be sparing withthe red pepper. When the tomatoes aredone, stir in the water and vinegar. Simmerfor a few more minutes and remove thegarlic. Blend the sauce and return it to thefire with the fish, and, if you wish, sprinkleanother tablespoon or two of olive oil intothe pot. Simmer the cacciucco until the fishis done, 10-15 minutes. Water, Power & Materials…There is much talk about energy efficienthomes and much to consider especially ifbuilding your new dream home. The majorthings to consider are research, financialimpact, practicality and product designinvestment and return.

Many consumers spend copious amountof time researching, reading magazines, searching the internet and talking toexpects only to end up very confused.• If building a new home three easy things

to implement without much of an impacton your pocket or time are in areas ofwater heating, storage, power andmaterials, definitely worth the research.

WATER STORAGE & HEATINGHeating your household water is the majorconsumer of energy in most homes. Thisenergy is mainly produced from coal firedgenerators which is inefficient and expensive.

The sun provides a limitless source offree non polluting energy every day andHills Solar has developed one of the mostadvanced solar hot water systems availablein Australia. Hills Solar hot water systemsenables you to harness the power of thesun, generating affordable hot water forthe home. With a Hills Solar EvacuatedTube solar hot water system you canefficiently capture this free energy andsave up to 90% on your hot waterheating costs.

The energy savings achieved frominstalling a Hills Solar hot water system willalso reduce your family's carbon footprintand assist in the preservation of theAustralian environment.

POWERHow solar photovoltaic (PV)systems workFlat solar modules are mounted on yourroof and convert energy from sunlight intodirect current (DC) energy. A device calledan inverter then changes the DC energyinto alternating current (AC) electricity. This can be used to power your householdappliances. A grid-connected system canfeed excess energy into the electricitynetwork (grid), while a stand alone systemneeds a battery to store excess energy.

When planning your home design, it isjust as important as the products andmaterials. Have you considered SolarPower?. It is relatively easy to compareprice, product and installation to assist inthe purchase of solar panels.

INSTALLING SOLAR PANELSThe popularity of solar panels, which can befixed to your roof to generate electricity, hasgrown significantly in recent years.

Flat solar modules are mounted on yourroof and convert energy from sunlight intodirect current (DC) energy. A device calledan inverter then changes the DC energy intoalternating current (AC) electricity. This canbe used to power your householdappliances.
