Lost in Space

Moovin ‘n’ Groovin The Journey Equipment: - stereo & music (Tracks 1-3) Children get into their space suit, zip it up and pull on their space shoes and helmet. Climb into the rocket and pull across the safety belts, getting into a crouched position ready for take off. Leader and children do a countdown from 5 or 10 to takeoff. Upon takeoff the children leap up from crouched position and run around the room on their journey into space. When the leader shouts “STOP” or “LAND” then the children stop running and land their rocket. Children leap out their rocket then leader shouts different commands for children to move around the planet they have just landed on. Suggested movements – hop, jump, leap, skip, gallop, side step, backwards etc. Make it fit to the theme, i.e. hop because the ground is hot, jump or leap over the craters, big steps as if the ground is spongy like marshmallows, sidestep the aliens etc

Balance ‘n’ Bounce Catch a Star Equipment: - fluff or koosh balls and hoops

Children get into pairs and have one hoop and one fluff or koosh ball between them. One child throws the fluff/koosh ball towards the other child who is using the hoop to catch the “falling stars”. The hoop can be held out in front at waist height (underarm throw) or straight up above the head (overarm throw). After a certain time indicated by the Leader the children switch over. Get children to count how many stars they have caught. The game can be expanded by having half the children in the hall standing in a space holding a hoop and the other half with fluff balls. The children with the fluff balls move around the room throwing through different hoops, counting up how many they get, then the children switch roles.

Twist ‘n’ Turn Space Invaders Equipment: - Four different coloured bibs Leader selects four different catchers to represent the four different aliens – the Zorgs, Daleks, Blobs and Slimers. Children (spacemen) run around the room trying to avoid being caught by an alien. The alien catches a child by “tagging” them and saying what type of alien they are – Zorg, Dalek, Blob or Slimer. Each alien has a corner of the room or marked out area where they can take his or her captured spacemen. Once all spacemen have been captured or the allotted time has passed then each alien counts how many spacemen they have captured. Play as often as desired, replacing the aliens each time. Depending on your class size you may only need two different groups. The names of the alien groups can be changed to suit whatever is popular with specific groups or feel free to let the children select the names of the aliens.

Asteroid Shower Equipment: - lots of fluff or foam balls, cones and two hoops Place the hoop in the centre of the room and fill it with lots of fluff or foam balls. One child stands at the hoop and the others spread around the room. The child at the hoop throws out all the balls as quickly as they can (one at a time) and the other children collect them and put them in the second hoop (or bucket). The aim of the game is for the thrower to get rid of all their balls, run out to a cone and back to the centre hoop (shouting “done!”) before the other children collect all the balls into their hoop/bucket.

Slither ‘n’ Stretch Moonwalkin’ Equipment:- stereo & music (but not essential) Children move around the room imagining they are walking back to their rocket, moving in similar ways as to the warm up but in reverse, i.e. faster or more active movements first then slowing down. Finally they return to earth where they can relax and recover from their exhausting journey by curling up in a ball.

Enchanted Kingdom

Moovin ‘n’ Groovin Monsters Inc Equipment: - stereo & music (Tracks 4-6) This is based on the film “Monsters Inc” where the character Sully is a monster and it is his job to scare children as they sleep at night. Children pretend to be Sully going to scare little kids in their beds at night. The leader calls out different instructions and children move accordingly… Scary Feet – fast feet on the spot Bunk Bed Scare – on tip toes, arms up and fingers in a claw then roar loudly Kids Awake – Children lie down still on the floor and be silent Monster Walk – big slow steps around room, growling Monsters Run – run around fast, waving arms and hissing loudly

Balance ‘n’ Bounce Escape the Troll Equipment: - 4 hoops, various balls and bean bags, spots (not essential) Split the class into 2-4 groups. Each makes a line down the length of the hall with a hoop at either end of their line. Spots can be used to mark out spaces where the children should stand. At one end the hoops are full of different balls and beanbags (with equal numbers in each teams hoop) and at the other end the hoop is empty. This is the treasure stolen by the Troll and children are to claim it back for the King. Children need to move the treasure piece by piece down the line and into the hoop at the other end without dropping it on the ground. If any treasure drops on the group the grumpy troll wakes up and chases the children back to their side of the hall. Once the troll goes back to sleep (after 5 seconds) the children move back to their spots and continue to remove the treasure. First team to get all their treasure into their hoop are the winners.

Twist ‘n’ Turn Goblins & Fairies Equipment: - cones & bibs Using the cones set up two “safe zones” at either end of the hall and select two or three catchers. Children start in one safe zone and all have a bib tucked into the top of their trousers/shorts as a “tail”. The catcher calls on one person to step out the zone and try to get to the other side. Before moving out the child shouts either Goblins or Fairies. Goblins means they run on their own until they get to the other side when everyone else can then run over. Fairies means everyone runs at once. Catchers catch by removing the “tail” bib from the runners. Once caught children become catchers. Last child remaining is the winner and becomes the catcher for the next game. Catchers are not to stand on the edge of the zone; they are to let the runners have a few metres space.

Slither ‘n’ Stretch Sneaky Gnomes Equipment: - none Children line up on one side of the hall as the goblins. One child plays the King and stands at the opposite side of the hall with their back to the goblins. The goblins try to sneak up on the King and touch the wall. Every time the King turns round goblins must freeze. Any goblin caught moving has to return to the start line. First goblin to touch the wall is the winner and becomes the King for the next game.

Sea Adventure

Moovin ‘n’ Groovin Discover the sea Equipment: - stereo & music (Tracks 7-10) Dive in (hold your nose!), swim down, what can you see? Move like fishes, sharks, starfishes, crabs, octopus, hermit crabs, jelly fish, mermaids, swordfish, dolphins and suggestions from the children. Pick some children to be jellyfishes. They will stay in their space bubbles and wave their arms (or scarf’s if you have any) like jellyfishes. The other children are fishes and have to move around the room avoiding the jellyfish. The children would then swap and become jellyfish and the other the fishes swimming around the room. At the end of the game the children then swim back up to the surface.

Balance ‘n’ Bounce Bubbletastic Equipment: - Balloons Give the children a balloon between two. This is their air bubble while they’re under the sea. Ask the children to balance the balloon on their hand, knee, foot, back, head, nose etc. Ask the children to then see if they can tap the balloon with their hand on the spot, then moving round the room. Then split the class into 2-4 groups and give out one balloon per group to have team relays with the children tapping the balloon with their hand and then running with the balloon between their legs.

Twist ‘n’ Turn Pirates of the Caribbean Equipment: - Cards (appendix) The leader shouts out various instructions and the children do the actions to match the word/phrase. Sunset-kids run to the bottom of the hall Sunrise-kids run to the top of the hall Calm seas-kids run to the right hand side of the hall Stormy seas-kids run to the left hand side of the hall Cooks coming-pat head and rub stomach Cooks been-pretend to be sick Climb the ladders – high knees and climbing arms Captains coming-stand up straight and salute Up periscope-lie on your back with a leg straight up in the air Scrub the deck-on hands on knees pretending to scrub the deck Captains wife coming-wiggle the body and say “oooh la la” Bombs overhead-duck down in a ball, arms over head Man the guns – lie down on your front leaning on elbows using arms to pretend to fire the guns

Slither ‘n’ Stretch Strong Stars! Equipment: - none Children all lie on their backs in a space with their legs and arms stretched out like a star. Children are asked to try and stick themselves to the floor (tense their muscles). The leaders will then come round and see which starfish are stuck to the rock and which are not! After the leader has been round everyone, they can then relax! The aim of the starfish is to stick to the rocks.

Rumble in the Jungle

Moovin ‘n’ Groovin Animal Play Equipment: - stereo & music (Tracks 11-13) Move around the room like various jungle animals - lions, monkeys, elephants, crocodiles, tigers, snakes, cheetahs, pumas, parrots etc. Ask the children for their suggestions. They can demonstrate an animal and the other children guess what animal it is.

Balance ‘n’ Bounce Hungry Monkeys: Equipment: - stereo & music (Tracks 11-13) fluff balls, 2-4 hoops, monkey cards (appendix) Children move around the room to the music, moving like monkeys. When the music stops children run to one of the hoops to collect a fluff ball (food). Monkeys are fed by throwing the fluffball at the monkey cards on the wall. This can be progressed by choosing which monkey is to be fed or giving the monkeys points and adding up the team or individual score at the end.

Twist ‘n’ Turn Feeding Time Equipment:- hoops, fluff balls Depending on how many children you have split the group up in to 2-4 groups. Each group has a hoop of 10 fluff balls or beanbags (the food). Name each group after an animal. The different animals (groups) have to steal the fluff balls (food) from the other hoops (dens). The animals are only allowed to steal one piece of food at a time, the put it in to their den and then they can go and steal more. When the leader shouts hunters are coming the animals stop stealing and go back to their dens. You can then count how much food is in each den.

Slither ‘n’ Stretch Animal Pairs Equipment:- one blindfold or scarf Allocate an animal to each pair. Individuals then spread out around the room and have to close their eyes (or be blindfolded if you have enough blindfolds/scarfs. The pairs now have to find each other by using their animal noise e.g. two snakes will ‘hiss’ and move towards their partner’s ‘hiss’. Alternatively one child is blindfolded and stands at one end of the hall with all other children at the opposite end of the hall. Allocate an animal to each child and the aim is for the blindfolded child to find a partner by matching up their animal noise as everyone moves towards the middle of the room.

Snake Slide Equipment:- stereo & music (Tracks 11-13) Join up in one big line or 4-5 smaller lines, which are the snakes. Everyone stretches out weaving in and out around the room like a snake would. The leader will tap someone on the head and they will have to remove themselves from the long snake and slither away and curl up and relax in a space. Ssssss as pull away. If using more than one snake line then tap the head of the person at the front to indicate that their team are to slither away into a space.

Olympic Superstars

Moovin ‘n’ Groovin

Opening Ceremony Equipment: - stereo & music (Tracks 14-16) Split the group in to teams depending on how many children you have. If you only have a few then they can play this as individuals. If in teams, they remain in the same teams for the whole session. Each group decides what country they are going to be and then makes up a little dance or presentation to show the rest of the class. This can be done to music. Once the children have had a few minutes to practice, the teams are to march round the hall to the music and line up ready to watch the dance or presentation or each country. The leader introduces each country before their performance.

Balance ‘n’ Bounce Twist ‘n’ Turn

The Games Equipment: - Throwing – javelins, fluff balls, shuttlecocks or shott putt. Jumping – throw down lines, mat, speed bounce, hoops or spots for hopscotch. Running - cones or a baton. A TOPS athletics bag could be used if available. Scoresheet (appendix, if desired) In groups everyone practices a throwing, jumping and running event. If you have time they could do more than one throwing, jumping and running event. Then they repeat the events for scores to be recorded. Possible events are… Snowball Throw – overarm throw using fluffball, soft ball, bean bag or shuttlecock Rocket Launcher – javelin throw using foam javelin Pendulum Power – underarm throw using soft ball/bean bag or bucket throw using shot putt or heavy ball Magic Ring Race - using quoits as a baton in a relay round the room Jump the River – cones mark out a river (narrow at one end, wide at the other) and child jumps over it Egg & Spoon Race – balance ball/bean bag on racket round a course Speed Bounce – count how many two footed jumps back and forth over line on the floor in set time Set Up - You can have each event being done one at a time as the other children watch or if you have assistance you can have a couple of events running at the same time. Points can be awarded for the longest throw/jump, best throw/jump style, fastest runner, team play, best behaviour, most improved etc.

Slither ‘n’ Stretch

Closing Ceremony Equipment: - Music and stickers Re-do the opening presentation or ask the children to come up with a closing dance/presentation then present the children their stickers.

The Big Top

Moovin ‘n’ Groovin Roll Up, Roll Up! Equipment: - Soft balls, stereo & music (Tracks 17-19) The leader states the boundaries for the game. Depending on the number of children you have choose 1-4 catchers who are each given a ball. The rest of the children run around the hall and avoid being hit with the ball. The catcher(s) can only roll the ball therefore a child is only out if the ball touches them below the knee. Catchers count up how many times they have caught someone and after a time set by the leader new catchers are chosen. The game can also be played where children are in pairs with one ball between them. One child is the catcher and the other is trying not to get tug by the ball. Catchers count up how many times they have caught their partner then they switch over roles.

Balance ‘n’ Bounce Tightrope Tricks Equipment: - None The lines on the hall are the tightropes and children are to try and do various actions like hopping, spinning, jumping etc without falling off the ropes.

Tightrope Tig Equipment: - None Depending on the number of children you have choose 1-4 catchers. Children move around the hall on the lines in the hall avoiding the catcher(s) who also must stay on the lines. If the hall has no lines then they must move round like tick, tack, toe or a tightrope walker. If someone is caught then they then move off the line into a space and balance on one leg with their arms stretched out at their sides. Children can only be freed if they are high-fived by a passing child. After a certain time change the catchers.

Twist ‘n’ Turn Clowning Around Equipment: - stereo & music (Tracks 17-19) One child is chosen to be the clown and stands at one end of the hall and everyone else faces them at the other end of the hall. The clown then turns his or her back and everyone tries to move towards the clown. When the clown turns round again then everyone must freeze like statues. The clown then has 5 secs to moves around the other players and tries and makes them move/laugh. If they move then they have to go back to the start. If they don’t move then the clown turns their back again and from the position they are at then they have to move closer to the clown. The winner is whoever makes it to the other end of the hall without the clown making them move.

Slither ‘n’ Stretch Animal Stretches Equipment: - None Children move their body into different animal stretches, for example, stretch on tip toes with arms stretched up above their heads like a giraffe; feet wide apart with arms stretched to the ground like an elephant’s trunk; curled up tight in a ball like a hedgehog to stretch their spine; on all fours with raised and lowered back like a big cat. Ask the children for other animal stretch ideas.

Sleeping Lions Equipment: - sheet/blanket Children find a space in the room, curl up into a ball and close their eyes. The leader puts the blanket over one child then asks everyone else to sit up. Children have to put their hands up to guess who the child under the blanket is.

Around the World – Desert, Down Under, Snow ‘n’ Ice

Moovin ‘n’ Groovin

Kiddies Choice Equipment: - one medium sized ball The game of “tadpole” is used to determine where in the world the session will go – Desert, Down Under or Snow ‘n’ Ice. Tadpole is played by splitting the group into two teams with one team forming the head of the tadpole (circle) and the other team making up the tail (line). One person stands in the centre of the circle and passes the ball back and forth to the others around the circle, counting the number of successful passes. Meanwhile the tail people take it in turns to run around the head. Once everyone in the tail has ran then the head must stop passing. Teams switch positions and the winner is the team with the most passes. That team then picks where the session will go – Desert, Down Under or Snow ‘n’ Ice. They can pick a different one at each section if they wish.

Walk like an Egyptian Equipment:- stereo & music (Tracks 21) You are in the desert, tip toe in the sand as it is hot; jump up and down as it is soft; move quickly so as not to sink; move slowly with big steps as it is deep; hop as it is hot, get down on all fours and walk like a camel

North Pole Jaunt Equipment: - stereo & music You are in the North Pole, slide on the ice, walk with giant steps to move from iceberg to iceberg, tip toe as the ice is thin, turn your feet out and walk like a penguin, gallop pretending you are a husky pulling a sleigh, slide on your tummy pretending you are on a sledge.

Koala Climb Equipment: - stereo & music (Tracks 20 & 22) You are a Koala, high knees and arms up and down like you are climbing a tree, walk carefully balanced along a line like you are walking along a narrow branch, crawl on all fours as if you were scurrying away from a crocodile, “hug” – go find another Koala and give each other a hug.

Balance ‘n’ Bounce Pyramid Knockdown Equipment: - cones and lots of small foam balls Mark out an area in the centre of the hall and fill it with lots of cones – the pyramids. Split the children into two groups and place a group at either end of the hall with lots of balls each. Children are to try and roll balls at the pyramids and knock them down. Once a pyramid is hit then the child can go and collect it. Team with the most pyramids at the end of the game is the winner.

Sink the Icebergs Equipment: - Hoops and beanbags Split the children into at least three groups, depending on their size. Each group has a set of three hoops (icebergs) scattered around them at varying distances, and lots of beanbags. The objective of the game is to get three beanbags into each hoop and once this is done the leader removes the hoop as the iceberg is “sunk”. First team to sink all their icebergs wins.

Around the World – Desert, Down Under, Snow ‘n’ Ice continued

Balance ‘n’ Bounce Feed the Gators Equipment: - lots of spots and beanbags Spread lots of spots (the gators) around the room and children move around trying to throw beanbags (the food) onto the spots. Each spot can have a numerical value or you can make sure certain colours go together, i.e. green beanbag to green spot., or everyone feed a blue gator etc.

Twist ‘n’ Turn Mummy Tig Equipment: - None Have one or a few children as It depending on the size of the group. Once caught children have to stand with their arms tightly by their slides and feet together as if they were a mummy. Children can be freed by another child spinning them round two or three times to unleash them from their mummy bandages.

Snowball Fight Equipment: - lots of fluff or foam balls Split the room into two with one team on one half and the other team on the other half. In each half put down lots of fluff or foam balls. When the leader shouts “Go!” the children have to try and clear their “snowballs” over to the other side. Everyone keeps going until one side has nothing left or the leader says stop. Team with no or the least amount of snowballs on their side of the hall are the winners!

Crazy Kangaroos Equipment: - None Split children into groups of three and in each group there has to be one of the following– Mamma Kangaroo, Daddy Kangaroo and Joey Kangaroo. They hold hands together with Mamma and Daddy on the outside of Joey. Everyone joins up to form one big circle. The leader shouts either Mamma, Daddy or Joey and whatever name is called has to run round the circle and back to their start where the other two Kangaroos make an arch way for them to run under. First child to get into the middle to high 5 the leader is the winner.

Slither ‘n’ Stretch Sand in the Eyes Equipment: - none Like Wink Murder.

Polar Bear Shapes Equipment: - Bear Shapes card (appendix) Get children to make the different shapes that appear on the cards.

Surfs Up Equipment: - None Children lie on their stomachs as if they were out at sea on their surfboards. A big wave is coming so they begin to paddle, using swimming arms and legs. As the wave gets closer they get up into a crouched position and finally stand up fully with one foot out in front and arms out at the side for balance. From here children can try different balances on their board. Finish off with “Wipeout!” where children fall off their boards and lie flat out on their backs relaxing.
