The Resource Management Law Association
Since October 1992, the Association has provided a forum where resource management professionals, local government, and industry representatives can network and discuss issues in an informed way. With an annual membership of more than 1,100 individuals, the aim of the Association is to promote:
understanding of resource management law and itsmulti-disciplinary implemen-tation.
excellence in resource manage-ment policy and practice.
resource management pro-cesses which are legally sound, effective and efficient,leading to high-qualityenvironmental outcomes.
Diversityof Membership
Membership of the Association is open to anyone with an interest in resource management and the environment. This includes:
Lawyers, planners, architects,industry environmental manag-ers, engineers, tangata whenua, environmental scientists, survey-ors, government department offi-cials, councillors, businesspeople, developers, project managers andindustry groups.
Young RMLA events are also held, with a particular focus on younger or developing practitioners (1-5 years experience). They provide an excellent opportunity for learning and networking for people new to the resource management field.

Seminars, Workshops and Roadshows
One of the key strengths of the Association is its extensive network of regional branches, providing a strong presence throughout the provinces as well as the major cities throughout New Zealand.
This regional network provides a platform for hosting regular seminars and roadshow events around the country, giving members a chance to hear expert speakers bring new perspectives to resource management and environmental issues.
GreatConferences
The Association’s annual conference provides excellent educational and professional networking oppor-tunities. The conference is regularly attended by more than 300 people and is themed around current issues and opportunites, attracting relevant NZ ministers and senior officials with international per-spectives all facilitating informed debate.
The annual conference is held in a different town or city throughout New Zealand, ensuring all regions are represented.

The Association keeps members up-to-date with the latest information about resource management law and related issues, publishing the in-depth Resource Management Journal, regular newsletters, a Directory of Professional Services and a comprehensive Resource Management Theory and Practice journal.

Awards andScholarships
In order to promote excellence in the resource management field, the Association pro-vides a generous scholarship programme, along with a series of awards to recognise outstanding achievements.
Scholarships of up to $15,000 are offered to encourage graduate students to focus their research theses on the application of resource man-agement in New Zealand.
Awards are made annu-ally to recognise excellence in statutory resource man-agement documents (such as policy statements), to acknowledge outstanding contributions by individuals, and to award projects that have made a significant con-tribution to resource man-agement best practice inNew Zealand.
GetInvolved
In order to provide members more ways of getting in-volved, the Association has established a series of Special Interest Groups which mem-bers are free to join. These focus on issues likely to be the subject of proposals for National Policy Statements or National Environmental Standards.
These groups include: Biodiversity, NZ Coastal, Electricity Transmission, Tele-communications, Land Trans-port, Freshwater, Air Quality, among others.
The Assocation’s Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn profiles provide convenient access to current issues and connectiv-ity to the membership.
